[REPORTED]2.5.6 Performance

Recommended Posts

Can you specify what settings was changed? Just curious.

I'd like to know that too.

It was a little late yesterday, so I couldn't check that in detail, but obviously something in higher settings indeed gave a performance boost. I couldn't isolate it though.

Everything maxed out, I mean everything including shadows on default and high ie, or traffic to high just tanks my system too much. Especially the enormous amount of things to be rendered kills my 2080ti in VR (PD set to 130 in steamvr, no ingame MSAA). Near a forest on Caucasus map it's just a slideshow.

Btw I use HP reverb atm and try to remain at least 45 fps. Everything below is nothing I would consider smooth or playable once up in the air.

1. Textures = High on 2.5.6

a. it was on Med in 2.5.5

2. Water = High on 2.5.6

a. was on Med in 2.5.5

3.Shadows = High on 2.5.6

a. was on med in 2.5.5

4. Terrain Object Shadows = Flat in 2.5.6

a. was on OFF in 2.5.5

5. Trees = 100% in 2.5.6 EDIT: this may need further testing in a wooded area..

a. was on 30% in 2.5.5..

I also keep Terrain Texture on low there is not much difference from what I can tell then the high setting besides more VRam usage..

this is what I am running now in 2.5.6 I beleive my specs are in the sig.. I am getting 21ms andd under in Frametime with FPS around 45 with motion reprojection on..

Fascinating, I am already on similar settings, on 255, with the exception of Shadows and Tree s, and terrain textures (but I have a ti so 11gb of vram)...

I see your frame time of 21ms, I get about the same... But i find perf unacceptable and stuttering in 256, especially at low level in trees, does 0.3mhz of processor make that much this difference?

Well if you tell me what mission you find the perf. unacceptable I can fly there and see what I get for a better comparison??

The FrameTimes sometime spike a bit but usually if I turn on an MFD MAverick page or similar..

I fly on the f18 instant action free flight in the cauc map,I roll 270degrees left pull through along the river in to the hills at tree top level following the pylon lines, and then pullback over the top of the second hill on your left inverted, rolling wings level after the crest and the back out towards the runway

I can confirm a huge performance drop after updating to 2.5.6. It seems independent from the settings I choose. In 2.5.5 I set everything to max and limit the fps to 60 via NVIDIA control panel and I am fine. With 2.5.6 I barely get 30fps on the ground. The worst scenario is the F/A-18 aggressor campaign. When starting from ramp in every mission the fps drop under 25 and the whole thing gets unplayable.

I really hope that ED brings a hotfix for 2.5.6 soon.

Actually I'm tired of being "played" by ED with their promises about performance boosts every 2nd update.

Because all we've ever gotten is performance issues since the hornet came out in 2018.

(I remember playing in VR @90fps back in the days before the "forever unfinished hornet" came out)

Every single "performance boost" ended up in a massive performance loss and after 2 years of broken promises the performance got so much worse for me that DCS is not playable anymore.

Neither in VR nor in 2D.

Like others I had a performance drop, deleted shaders, deleted options.lua and played around with settings on the options page and finally screwed something up enough that DCS would not start, just hourglass spinning. So I closed it with "task manager" and deleted options.lua and restarted it. Went through the options page and set everything "I think" to what I had in 2.5.5 . My frame rates were back to at least what they were in 2.5.5. I wonder if there is a file that gets saved in DCS when it shuts down normally that is the problem? Obviously when you close it down with task manager it can't save what it usually does in a normal shutdown. FWIW

It seems that performance drop is related to the Mist and other used scripts.

How did you arrive at that conclusion? I think it's false. Certainly in my case I'm not using any scripts.

As far as I can see the performance issues are specifically Persian Gulf related. I've tested all maps with the F-16 and PG is the only map that has lost a lot of FPS.

Yes, it's a misunderstanding of a completely separate issue.

The patch broke pretty much all existing frameworks as well as a significant number of older missions due to poorly implemented updates to the scripting engine. In some cases, these frameworks still semi-run but cause hiccups and log spam to deal with various scripting errors behind the scenes. As such, scripts using those frameworks cause additional issues (including some slowdowns) but the general performance loss happens even without any added scripting slowdown.

Performance has actually been a bit better for me in 2.5.6. lol

Flatscreen or VR?

For some reason alot of VR guys (but not all) are having frame rate issues.

i think 2.5.6 is a really nice update ;) THANKS ED.

i only suffer big FPS LOSS

was in back seat F14,

and when i turn the radar ON in the ajs-37 Viggen.

so i suppose that is in some way related with the radar on screen.

Flew several missions MP with 28 pilots yesterday in Caucuses on the big screen. Ran nice and smooth.

Flew in MP PG Map with 8 pilots destroying ground targets in the F16 in VR. No performance issues.

Hosted my own busy custom mission in PG, again with no issues. I opened the mission in ME and saved before I flew it, always heard that the is the thing to do. But no scripts in that one.

This always is the case when many are gnashing their teeth after an update.

Never happens to me. Why is it I never see these performance issues so many of you bring up time and time again.

Because you arent as sensitive to performance loss, frame drops and stutters?

I have come across many who say their performance is fine, and fine is rather relative, yet some only run 20 fps (even in VR) and are perfectly happy with it and dont really know what they ran before, or even before you asked. My threshold is 60 fps on monitor and 45 fps in VR, and I notice it immediately when Im below that.

Same with me.... I never seem to experience this either, but I am not running with an FPS counter on all the time, either. I strictly go by how it feels and looks, and so far 2.5.6 looks and feels great to me.

Of course, it's beta and we're all beta testing, which is fine, and ED will provide updates on a regular basis for us to eval. So no worries whatsoever from my end.

Good question, but that is not the case, I’m pretty sensitive to obvious changes and would notice stutters if I had them. I am not new to gaming/simming being a virtual pilot since the late 90s.

I will admit I am not an FPS watcher... if gameplay is smooth whats the point...I am too busy in the cockpit to stare at Frame Rate. However, I will look at them when I am curious.
