Africa theater of 1970's through 1990

Angola, Zaire, Zimbabwe (RHodesia), Mozambique, Congo, Uganda.

We got Migs-21, Mig-15, French Mirage, French helicopter (used also by Belgians and British), MI-8 (every Soviet client state and revolutionary government). Period specific armor and even Land Rovers. A Puma helo would be good. What we need in DCS is tube artillery. D-30 122mm, M105, M119, M198 , G5 towed howitzers. We also need African 'Freedom Fighters' light infantry, British & French style European Para and mercenaries. THose would be used for South African infantry, which is modeled on British Army.

I find those Bush Brushfire Wars on periphery of Cold War fascinating. THey fought over land, over diamond and gold mines, hunting & poaching lands. So many operations were secret and buried. But they made use of airborne drops, air assault helicopter borne infantry. French and British mercenary pilots flew Mirages, Hunters, Alouettes, Puma's, UH-1, Augusta UH-1 variants, AH-1S Cobra under various "Peace Marble, Peace Rock,. Peace WHATEVERNAME" provided by DOD and CIA to counter Communist guerrillas. Communist block 'volunteers' flew MI-8, MI-2, MI-24, Mig-21, Mig-23. Trainers were used as attack aircraft. Lots of special operations. SAS, Belgian Para, French Parachute + Foreign Legion, PMC special operations. Helicopter operations in highly confined jungle, velt (prairie), South African 'bush' terrain. Little in way of MOUT and urban ops. Some littoral naval actions with small craft.

I agree in that it would be a cool area to fly with our current/soon to be released planeset, we can even simulate soviet or american intervention with early Hornets/A-7 and Vipers.

Anyone know the exact area we will need to have?

I don't understand anything in russian except Davai Davai!

There is no upcoming Africa theater, that I know of. That is why I put on wishlist. But roughly figure 500 square miles with its bottom leg centered on town of Ondjiva Angola, where Operation Protea took place during Angolan Bush War 1975-2002 time frame. A landlocked campaign in the Veld terrain of Southern Africa. So plenty of terrain masks for NOE helicopter flights in Gazelle, low level flight in Mirage, troop transport and CAS with MI-8, MI-24, and UH-1.

Also works for some modern day or near future scenario. Probably around rare earth minerals extraction. Which makes China and Russia potential sides.

I've been on about this for years! For all the reasons above and more...

But on the assets front, I've been trying to find someone to help me with converting the Armscor Arma 3 mod for ages now. I can get the 3D Studio max files, but converting them to work in DCS is well beyond my pay grade.

So if any of you guys can help or know anyone who might be able to, please let me know! It's about time we get some proper bush war assets for DCS.

And this is well worth a watch if you haven't yet seen it...

Cuba's Vietnam.

South Africa's Korean War+Vietnam

IMHO, South Africa's pre-Mandela 'Apartheid' government got the short end of the stick. Not that I am a supporter of that system, I am not. But South Africa did fight their corner of Cold War against communism on our side. The West. Their soldiers, European and American PMCs(mercenaries), fought and died fighting international communism. I don't hear acknowledgement of that, and that is unfortunate. Tragic really. Same goes for Rhodesian Light Infantry, and Belgian Para in Congo (Zaire today).

A good portion of light infantry and MRAP mobile infantry COIN tactics, found their way into US Army and USMC operations in AfPak and Iraq. Modern MRAP in US Army, USMC, Allies are advanced developments of Cassipir vehicle. High off the ground, huge wheels, extra think runflat tires, V shaped mineblast deflection armor, extra heavy duty armored suspension and drive train. That's Cassipir. Its also MRAP from Oshkosh Corp from great US State of Wisconsin.

Yeah. Would be just the thing for a bush warrior such as myself with proper and period-accurate hardware. Seconded.

Just curious, for fightin in the Bush of Southern Africa, would you prefer heavier 7.62 NATO FN FAL, or lighter 5.56 such as period specific M-16A1/A2, Brit SA-80, or French FAMAS, as individual weapon. For squad automatic weapon a 7.62 NATO M60, FN MAG, or lighter 5.56 NATO light MG such as M249 SAW.  In that environment, what is the most pressing environmental issue for light arms field maintenance and reliability. Dust, rain?

Well, the SADF loved the FN, but after deploying it to South West Africa, they found they needed to replace it because of the sand issue there. Hence they went with the R4/Galil, which is basically an AK at the end of the day...
