New CPU oir just get a GPU??

Recommended Posts

Hey Everybody,

I was looking to do an full upgrade but I can not do all so I have to pick eitherh the CPU+Motherboard or a new video card..

I currently have a intel i5 7600K @ 4.8GHZ and a Asus 1080GTX.

Now I was looking to go with an Intel i7 9700K or as 2080RTX Suiper.. I also use an odyssey Plus VR Headset..

Which will get me a better over all upgrade for my system remeber I can not do all just the CPU(Mobo) or GPU Only..

Thank you

Nephilim'

No expert here, but I always thought that DCS in VR benefitted more from a better graphics card, if you already had a decent CPU? I also thought that the 1080ti and 2080ti were better at this than the 1080 and 2080, respectively, and that the 2080s only gave you a noticable improvement in games that used ray-tracing?

I'm thinking gpu , but i would advise waiting , and seeing how 300x and rdna2 shake out this fall . This with the view of preparing for Vulkan , which will require more Vram . If you absolutely cannot wait , then a 2080ti for the same reason . A very interesting presentation by Laminar Research regarding their Vulkan implementation informs this opinion .

Also on YouTube , a test of Reverb vs Rift S in that sim by VR flight sim guy confirms it .

Well a 2080RTX let alone a Ti version of that card both are pretty expensive and I would hate if the 3xxx series cards came out sooner but IDK..

Maybe I will wait as I am trying to get another project going and that needs my attention instead of new gadgets..

What is RDNA2, is that a new line of Radeon cards or something?

Yes . RDNA cards seem to benefit much more from Vulkan than current Nvidea , just to further complicate the calculation .

yes I seen what RDNA is all about but the question would be now when is Vulkan coming in DCS??

I would buy now but with all that is going on it probally is not a wise idea to be making big ticket purchases..

No one knows , including doubtless ED . That other company mentioned 2 or 3 iterations before being comfortable with a Beta release .

But unless one is one who gets a new graphics card every year , it should likely be factored into the purchasing calculation .

Well I just looked at the release date og my Video Card it was 4 years ago it came out and probally bought it a little later but it is at least 3.5 years old.

Perhaps I should just get a 2080Super right now.. I was just in a MP server in DCS and I was getting horrible FPS it was as low as 25FPS..

I am unsure if a video card would help that.. what do you guys thing.. I will need to recheck my SS in SteamVR..

Hey Guys,

I went ahead an ordered a new CPU and Motherboard, it is an i7 9700K and gigabyte z390 gaming board..

I think this will be the best solution for right now.. I may just wait for the 30xx series cards now as this CPU should fill the gap according to fpsVR..

RDNA no longer generally benefits from DX12, or Vulkan. Is just poorly optimized in DX11 by AMD;)

In addition, Nvidia is almost always faster with the competing products, in Vulkan or DX12.

Does 2.5 benefit from more than 4 cores?

Otherwise, not much should change if your 4 core is already running at 5GHz.

Well according to the video I watched the CPU Upgrade will help.. I figured to upgrade the base first then get a 3xxx series card when they come out hopefully soon..Here is the video he says it is for 2.5.5 but it is some solid info for those interested: goto 13:30 for CPU VS GPU Part..

You know you are 100% correct here, I ran the same mission f16 interdiction and compared it too my other fpsVR Graph and it was identical..

So Perhaps I should have bought a Video card.. I should not have listened to that video I linked..

Thank you and will get a new vid card when they come out 3080 hopefully in June/July

I've seen loads of people get more from their CPU upgrades, but really it always comes down to what combination, where the bottleneck is and what type of mission you are running.

I've seen frametime go red for CPU in one module and GPU frametime go red in another in the same mission but different modules. This isn't a simple question at all and I'd still pick the CPU first as it involves the board, busses, RAM and other places that can bottleneck first. You can solve GPU stress by turning down graphics, but you cannot solve CPU frametime easily.

Well not sure what thaat guy did in his video to get the cpu frametimes low but I noticed with alot of objects in the scenario I get huge cpu frametime spikes and in the orange..

I guess it is to be expected. not sure If I am going to wait for the 3080RTX vid caards but they mey help alot..

I am just going to be happy as it really works well with the new cpu and graphics are up a bit so is the Super sampling.. DCS has never looked better..

How big is the difference between the I5 7600k @ 4.8GHz and the 9700k?

Did you take a measurement of?

It will be interesting for many others too! ;)

I hope for both of us that the RTX3000 cards will be published as soon as possible

Well like I was saying in Post #15 they where near identical same setting and all the only difference was the different cpu.. so not really a benefit I guess because of DCS not utilizing more then 2 cores which I did another post on in DCS section of the forums..

I hope the new 3xxx cards will help but I am not holding my breath I am betting on Vulkan to help tho with DCS. but we don't know when that will come to DCS..

This mission (F16 interdiction caucasus) "has a bug". In VR, with ASW off (no fps capping) I can't get more than 45fps ("bug" is capping perfs), when in other missions I get normally variating FPS between 45 and 90.

A good exemple of "perf bugged" mission (there are probably several) but in my opinion not a good exemple to see if a new cpu gives better perf with DCS.
