Upgrading Advice

Hello players,

 

my current system

 

Asus maximus VII hero

i7 4790k

msi RTX 2080

2400 mhz g.skill

SSDx2

 

 

my problem with this system is it is difficult to play 4k without FPS problems

And even at 2k, you will see FPS drops from 60s to 50s for a second or two which creates stutter like feel. I would like to eliminate this and keep constantly at or above 60 FPS. inorder to do this, i am thinking about upgrading to this below

 

Z490 Asus motherboard

i9-10900k

GPU will remain the same

DDR4 4800 mhz 16GB or more

SSD remains

 

Now this will cost me about $1300 , i will need new PSU also as I dont like my current one. I know DCS is GPU intense.

After having done all this, my concern is still dropping below 60

 

I need your advice on this, i really dont like below 60 FPS

4800MHz is nonsense, rather get 3600-4133MHz with a TIGHT latency. 4800 does come with a latency penalty voiding the whole idea.

May be there is the problem.

 

 

The 10900k is an absolute overkill for DCS. Since DCS really only uses two cores for a relatively long time.

 

A Ryzen 3600 or an I5 with overclocking would make a lot more sense.

 

The new I5 from Intel also gets 12 threads.

In DCS, AMD and Intel are equally fast per cycle with the current CPUs. So I would if it was just about DCS.

 

Either get a cheap 7700k, or buy a new I5 and overclock it as high as possible.

 

I would keep it as cheap as possible to switch to ZEN3 soon if necessary.

 

Or see what's new from Intel.

 

If money doesn't matter anyway, you can of course also take the 10900k.

Currently I have 24GB g.skill

 

And yes it is my concern that I might not see much performance

because of the way DCS uses cpus. I think I would be happy if my

minimum FPS stayed above 60 FPS, I dont care much about max.

I wish somebody made before and after upgrades FPS result on youtube

My tip for RAM: 32GB 3600 CL16-16-16-38-2T as a 4x8GB kit.

 

4 Modules have a slight performance advantage over 2 Modules ( with same total amount of RAM ). There are 16GB modules around that are Dual Rank as well but they, afaik, dont clock that high and tight and also, there is Samsung E-Die out now but that is not what I would buy, Samsung B-Die is the best DDR4 die ever made, E-Die is lesser in performance, it's advantage is capacity ( and likely lower production costs as well ).

 

Gskill has a great kit that I use myself in the 16GB variant, CL16-16-16-38-2T. I also run a Corsair kit with 32GB and CL16-16-16-38-2T but Corsair does not produce that anymore, they have CL16-18-18-38-2T meanwhile.

 

All talk aside, your mobo needs to love those RAM modules or it wont XMP. There is a risc that you cannot enable XMP, so buy them at a place where you can send them back if that is the case. If they XMP but BSOD, same thing, return them and try another kit.

 

Rule of thumb:

CAS x 2000 / Speed(in MHz)

The lower the answer, the faster the RAM.

 

DDR4-3200

CL14-14-14-34

14 * 2000 / 3200 =8.75

 

DDR4-4133

CL19-19-19-39

19 * 2000 / 4133 = 9.19

 

4133 has more bandwidth...but it is slower !

 

DDR4-3600

CL16-16-16-38

16 * 2000 / 3600 = 8.88 3600CL16 is the sweetspot, as fast as 3200 tight latency but with more bandwidth...it's hard to get a better balance. 3600 CL15 or CL14 is the best you can do with overclocking with maybe some higher Voltage ~ 1.3875 -1.4v good kits on a good mobo can achieve that.

 

Coupled with an Intel chip ( sorry AMD here ) you can get a freaking low latency somewhere in the 42-48ns, that is something and great for responsiveness with niche applications, like VR, TiR and apps that need everything you can provide, like DCS.

You should be able to hold 60fps @ 1440P with your system now I think.

 

What clock are you running? 4.8 Ghz

 

Lets compare to my build which is very close to your build.

 

1080ti vs 2080 (Good match up)

 

Core-i7-7700K vs Core-i7-4790K

 

Now I generally run at 4.8 Ghz up to 5Ghz, have you got cooling that can do this? You have a great motherboard, I have the asus maximus ix hero that's are made for overclocking.

 

I run an AIO and it keeps the temps good.

 

Running at 60 fps (I lock my system to 60) this smooths out the game and trackir.

 

If you can hit 4.6 to 4.8 Ghz it should look like this at 1440P. (Plus i was recording on a 4 core chip, no HT on)

 

This is also on one of the largest servers online with player combined arms access. Max graphic settings MSAA x 2

 

 

Not sure if it's going to be worth it upgrading to that real expensive chip just now, when DCS is still very limited to single core speeds at the moment. You might get 10%. Will that be enough to get 4K @ 60fps.Not sure?

With the same settings and the same missions (see page 1 of the thread) people are comparing the FPS they achieve. I have the same CPU you have and a slightly slower GPU. I figured out that someone with the same GPU I have and a faster CPU (6600K), and respectively DDR-4 RAM, reaches appr. 40% higher FPS compared to mine. So I guess by upgrading to a faster CPU and the mentioned 32 GB of DDR-4 RAM you should be more than fine.

If you follow the thread I linked I simply compared the 6600K@4,3 GTX1080TI combo with mine 4790K@4,4 GTX1080Ti combo. Same settings (I guess) and same missions. That´s why I´m coming to 40%.

This is a real bad build to test on. Playing / testing with drivers also.

What rez are you on? I was struggling to hold 60 at 1440P (MSAA x 4) on the river run (Nothing in that mission). Strange? GPU 100%.

 

When I hold 60 on a very large server at max settings MSAA x 2?

 

River Run : 110-120 fps @ 100% GPU (start screen)

SU-25T: 140 fps@99% GPU (start screen)

SU-25T: 115ish fps@99% GPU (flying over cities)

 

NVIDIA 445.87 driver (approx. the same with 442.19)

 

 

That's real real impressive if that's on the 4K screen. (43" Philips 4k-UHD TV) plus (3 TM MFDs on 2nd 24"display)

I did my test according what the OP said. When starting the mission the FPS does not really drop but start fluctuating more which makes it hard to say what it exactly is.

I´m playing with 7680 x 1440 and do not reach that much there.

 

 

River Run: 57 FPS (98%, Start Screen)

SU-25T: 54 FPS (98%, Start Screen)

 

 

NVidia Driver: 442.19

i am not able at all, and can barely oveclock beyond 4.5 ghz without serious heat issue. i have noctua air cooler but i might have to reseat it. it idles around 40s but quickly reaches 80 like the blink of an eye.

 

you have g-synch monitor, i think that helps you. do you think liquid cooler like yours is better?

 

and my settings are identical to yours with grass turned off and visibility high and shadow medium
