Has anyone tried the 10900k yet?

My friend has just picked up the 10700k so we should have some ideas on performance soon hopefully, he's gone from a 6th gen I5

I will be sticking with my i9 9900k for at least couple more years, hopefully even more.

Yo, im quite late, but still. I wanted to suggest the upcoming amd ryzen 4000 series cpus. I realize that maybe u cannot wait that long, but ryzen 4000 might finally take the lead in single core performance too and since thats exactly what u are looking for, it might be a good choice to wait.

4th gen ryzen will have 8 cores on 1 die (good for L3 cache latency), higher IPC and higher clocks than 3th gen ryzen. Right now Intel has generally 50% less ram latency (depends on ram clock and timings), better core to core latency (thanks to the ringbus architecture) and ofcourse clocks quite a bit higher (thx 14nm+++). IPC is really similair if not better on ryzen 3000 (check hardware unboxed's video).

I myself also value single core perf over multi core perf but when i was building my pc i bought an r5 3600 which is ok in single core perf, i would have gone for a i5 10600K if that was avaiable 10 months ago. Now ill buy whatever is better when 4th gen ryzen and intels 11th series release, no biased purchases over here.

does ram speed make any real differnce? im using 32gb at 3ghz

For me, it´s a big difference. My 6700k@4,7GHz have good benefit from RAM OC.

On AMD Zen 2 you should try to get 3800MHz on Ram.

On Intel try to get so high, you can go.

That´s it. ZEN3 can change everything, but now you can´t get an ZEN3. I hope i don´t have to wait to long, for ZEN3.

Those Zen2-XT versions look great as well. Those extra couple hundred MHz will for sure yield a few more fps. If it is enough to overtake Intel... we will see in a few weeks. For sure the already narrow gap gets even tighter if not closed by then.

Is there anything even approaching a consensus on how many cores DCS uses or is likely to use?

The choice being between a 3600X and a 3700X.

4 cores is about as good as it gets according to this very well done (but now getting a bit old) test:

https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=157374

I ran DCS on i5 6600K (4 core) up to this year and it was quite playable. I'm on a 6 core 9600K now, but that was more for future proofing than anything else.

Awaiting: DCS F-15C

Mhz alone wont do much for the XT's. Watch this:

X6RSEU1d-g8

It will take a huge boost to infinity fabric clock to do that. Rumour has it XT chips will reach 2000 Mhz fabric but that was not tested ever. Mine is already 1800Mhz so it wont be huge. Also you need expensive RAM to reach 4000Mhz.

I'll check that out, thanks. I'm on an i5-6500 now and I think a few more horsepower would be good.

Its really interesting. Intel has 50ns of latency to the ram, amd zen 2 (3000 series) has 75ns. These numbers are at 3200mhz and testing was done by hardware unboxed. If u tune the memory u can go into the 60s on zen 2, but u will never reach 50ns. I think memory latency is a big advantage that intel has. Zen 3 will improve on it, but the interesting thing is that intel should improve on it too. A leaked slide showed that intel wont be realeasing any desktop cpus this year, which is a shame, looks like amd has this year with their zen 3. But maybe intel will still be better in single core next year, if they can get a new μarch with better ipc, better mem latency and atleast good clockspeeds. Better mem latency will yield better scaling when ocing.

I'm not convinced Zen 3 is going to be that much better if at all than 10900k in single threaded situations.

Everyone loving on AMD just seems to be an attempt to 'stick it to the man' of the Intel powerhouse.

But I do kind of feel that there's a culture of us being told we need those extra cores. Who here uses their DCS machine for blender or adobe premier?

My 4cyl Audi S3 was a lot faster than my mate's 6cyl 3 series BMW haha :)

Yep, exactly! This is why I'm more focused on the 10600K (OC'ed).

My workstations are workstations, PC for gaming is PC for gaming and does nothing else.

If/when vulkan in DCS puts enough load on a 10600 for it to be an issue we will be into another upgrade cycle or two already so it doesn't matter. 6/12 will be plenty anyway.

Some seem to have the mindset only with the most expensive, latest hardware you can enjoy our hobby truly.

While in reality the advantage this exclusive hardware really provides is much smaller than they realize.

Take a look at a book: Only text, and still able to create beautiful pictures in your mind.

Sure if you are to buy new hardware consider you needs. But my advice, do not get too target fixated. Remember to pull up before it is too late.

I think the 10900k reviews are disapointing. Intel needs to come to grips with their next gen tech before they will be able to provide truly a meaningful imrovement of their CPUs.

Depends on what your baseline is though. Relative to my 4790k that was £260 7 years ago it's a huge upgrade and represents great value, both intrinsic and financially, the 10900k is now the same price the 9900k was last month which is great to see. Flagship graphics cards on the other hand. I'm still stuck in the days of buying the best in the world for £350 then all of a sudden when I want the best this generation it's £1350!

I do have that mindset where I want the latest most expensive hardware (to a certain degree at least / within reason and within the mainstream market) It's part of what makes us enthusiasts.

Something I have taken from your last post also is questioning why I don't dust off my Vic-20 and see how it handles DCS in VR. I also have a BBC Micro that I could hook up if someone has the DCS tapes

Any upgrade these days has to take FS2020 into consideration.

If it ends up being what they say it will be, no flightsim-head will be able to resist. My upgrade definitely has DCS and FS2020 in its path. I think I'm stuck on getting a 3700X at this point. Just want the prices to come down a bit, everything is high right now.

As the title reads really, I'm keen to hear the differences over previous CPUs as it's time to upgrade to 10th gen (i'm on a lowly 4790k!)

Is there anyone here waiting on a pre order? It's been too long since my last build and my cash is burning a hole in my pocket!

Let your money keep burning that hole in your pocket--The 4790K is actually very good, and yours is running at 4.7 GHz. It will perform just about identically in gaming as any other processor going 4.7 GHz, including ones that cost over a thousand bucks.

The 10th gen stuff is really nice, but your CPU is already cooking along at 4.7. You'll probably see a noticeable, but rather small, improvement in DCS by going up to a very expensive new system--and it's only because of the higher maximum overclocks, not the 67 extra cores :)

If you just want to burn lots of money, get an RTX Titan. It actually *will* make an improvement.
