Gain FPS with cockpit only shadows

Recommended Posts

very likely it works perfectly well, you have selected shadows LOW ??

Yes, and just to confirm it is supposed to just show cockpit shadows?

As you can see in the screenshot that isn't the case. I copied and overwrote the shadows.lua from kegetys post.

... check from inside the cockpit...

So in external view the shadows should still be there?

Oh what an idiot, yeah i see they show up in external view but not in the cockpit. Is there a way I can make them just not show up?

try replace this with the entry for low ... this no idea if it would work but it should

{0, 0, 0, 0.02, 20.0, 7000}

Hi Folks,

I cant get this to work?

Ive attached my amended file, does anyone know where i'm going wrong?

Running valve index.

I get cockpit shadows but still get shadows around the island on the super carrier with shadows set to high?

Many thanks.

Not at my PC right now and can't open your lua file on my mobile, but just to be sure... I assume you didn't rename the actual lua file in your save games folder, right?

oh i see it;

try this for low

{0, 0, 0, 0.02, 70.0, 7000},

{0, 0, 0, 0.02, 20.0, 7000}

you have to many cascades active

The issue with the mod is that even though it works with the supercarrier. It does not work with hangers etc which still have the shadows and bring fps down.

On the Supercarrier I have better fps when the shadows of objects set default than flat.

You have the same experience with the shadow?

As an SP 2D user this is the most/only useful thread ive read in 4 years!

Taking Kegety's lua which i use for aircraft as inspiration, ive added another, alternate lua opton i switch in with OvGME for very low level helo flying.

All ive done is reduced the HIGH setting shadow map on the ED standard shadows.lua from 4096 to 2048. This allows my poor old I5/1080 combo to smoothly run full up shadows on everything (inc terrain at default) at treetops. The flip is that the pop distance around you isnt very big but at under 500ft you dont notice and the effect of the shadows drawing in and even above and if you do its quite subtle anyhow.

The big plus for me and my KA50 is that the trees look better, the shadows dont hang in the air on steep ravines and i get a nice immersion boost from a helo shadow the dosent cut off over the flucuations in the terrain. At helo heights and speeds the 2048 shadowmap is more than enough for me.

Happy camper.

Friendly reminder to those using this tweak:

After OB update "shadows.lua" is reset and you'll need to change the values again (or else you might wonder why your framerates plumbed after updating :smilewink:)

I've just given this a go and think this option definitely needs to be implemented by Ed. Quick question though, does anyone know what the values that are being changed actaully control?

For example {0.02, 2.5,  25.0,  250.0, 1500.0, 7000}, what does the '1500.0' represent, meters out from the cockpit?

You can also set the values to 0 to remove the rendering of the specific shadow cascade(s) completely which will reduce CPU overhead. Here is the shadows.lua I use: http://junk.kegetys.fi/shadows.lua

With that, all shadow settings use the same resolution (4096x4096 pixels, most GPU's should be fine with that) but the different settings have different amount of cascades instead. 'Low' setting has only one cascade, so you get shadows only in the cockpit, medium has two cascades and high has 3. The DCS default has 4 cascades on every setting and only the shadowmap resolution is different.

When you use terrain object shadows with that you still get shadows drawn as far as before, just the overhead is less and at least in VR the visual difference is quite small.

Yes, it works a treat! 👍 👍 Thank you

More people should know about this, and have a go at it as it may help.
