Why OAP

I think I understand what OAP is, just to clarify if you are looking at something in targeting pod or you have a known way point you say attack a target that is let’s say 030degrees at 500ft from that known point?

 

My problem is why would you do it like this, it seem like it would be easier to just point you targeting pod at it, or even just use you HUD diamond to target it. If the object isn’t displayed on the F10 map then it is just a guess at the bearing and range from the known location. Even more if you actually new exact distance and bearing then wouldn’t you just put in the LAT/LONG?

Let’s say your coordinating with a JTAC. They can give you an OAP much faster then DMS coordinates, by turning it on and off you can essentially have more targets then you have waypoints

Some target may behind obstacle for direct aiming, or SPI could be a obvious land mark for ingress reference.
