New Tutorial:: Su-27: Tanker Attack Mission

The "Tanker Attack" mission is the last stock Su-27 mission (#5). The night is dark and stormy and you and your wingman are tasked with downing a well protected KC-10A tanker aircraft. In this tutorial, Goran "BrzI" Ivaz discusses some of the advantages and pitfalls of making a "stealthy" low-level approach. He gives some excellent hints on wingman management and even talks a bit about astral navigation. Come, join the fun.

Do Proffesional pilots fly lock on?( fun or otherwise) , if so what is there opinion of it in general?( say in a2g)

I have often wondered about this and have never really come across any one giving a opinion.

A well known name from the Flanker 2 era. Having so much fun with the RAFSC's GMAs I hurry to download that video. It was the best offline flight sim experience ever.

 

OT- Hey Rich, have you heard anything from Bryan 'BigBri' Wherry? I remember that he was making plans to continue the GMA's in Lock On but last time I heard of him he said he has no time for flight sims anymore. A lot of time passed ever since...

I know of one for certain--not military but civilian. In fact he's a beta tester for Eagle and has been one for years. Last I knew, he enjoyed the sim.

Unfortunately, not in ages. I think the last time might have been back in 2002 in connection with the RAFSC.

Really? OK. Want to see something really beautiful? Set up a mission for day 230, time 17:35:00. Stand on the Crimean shore looking toward the east. As time advances and dusk moves toward night, you can watch Orion rise from the sea. In my book, Orion is one of the most beautiful constellations in the sky.

 

I've been doing a bit of mission building lately and wanted a different look to the nighttime sky. I set that one up by accident. I was flying and happened to look east, saw the 3 vertical stars rising and thought: "My god! Orion!" Brought the same smile to my face that sighting the real constellation every autumn brings.

 

EDIT: Went back and grabbed a screenshot from the mission setup I mentioned (230:17:35:00). If you watch it for awhile (on fast forward), this what what you will end up seeing as the sky darkens:

 

 

Kind of interesting to use the sim for stargazing, too. :)

I just downloaded the track and watched the whole video. Very cool track but i wanted to mention something about it ... isnt the whole mission based on a tactic possible only by exploiting the game ? I dont mean to be polemic.. but the way the pilot gets on the enemy's six flying 9 meters off the water is cool and looks awesome in a video and all but still .. i find that a bit odd as a 'training video'. Just pushing the paradox here, but it s a bit like saying 'hey kids you can do this to avoid enemy radar' it s an exploit but we wont mention that ;). Dont get me wrong, i m a huge fan, i started flying this sim thanxs to Iron's training videos, 6 thumbs up man.

I just dont think it should be shown as an actual tactic the way the author shows it in the video. This track is great for suggestions and advice on the use of the wingman, i just dont agree on basing the suggested tactic on an exploit.

 

That said thanx for the cool track i enjoyed watching it.

Guess I view it as less of a how-to for that particular mission than a vehicle (using that particular mission) to demonstrate the use of EOS, etc. And the low attitude approach allowed BrzI to talk a bit about the radar altimeter and some pitfalls that can be especially lethal at low altitude. The truth of the matter is that he could have stayed at altitude with the same outcome. Give it a try and you'll see what I mean.

 

Take a look at the mission map and you'll see that, although their radar will sweep you at first, you will be too far away for them to get a return. The low altitude approach through the storm just made for more exciting video. The "trick" to the mission is to keep your own radar (and your wingut's) turned off. When I flew it myself, I actually flew above the clouds and kept my wingnut tied to my side. Splashed the tanker and two of the escorts myself and ran for home, wingnut in tow.

In order to notice the constellations in the sky, you have to know them... Noticed them first night I flew, was so pleased... Could be a problem for US stargazers as it is northern hemisphere and not visible from US.

??? Whatever do you mean? They're not visible in the US? I must be misinterpreting what you're saying because these are the stars I see out my back door at night. I just have to change the sim's season through the day count to match mine. Unfortunately, the sim doesn't start counting with Jan 1st being Day 001.

:doh: Woopsy daisy, had in mind South America (shame on me), my fault. They can't see Polaris or Northern Star, except from an elevated position near the equator.Orion is best seen during the winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and during the summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

:) Ahhh... That makes much more sense. Sochi and I are practically on the same longitude. So the sim more or less matches what I can see in RL and your initial statement was confusing me.

Unfortunately, it's not. As near as I can tell, the sim's year starts somewhere in or around June. To be honest, it's not something I ever paid much attention to. It only becomes an issue, if you want the star fields and length of day to match the calendar.

You can set 'day 1' date in \Config\world\world.lua. The default date is June 22, the summer solstice day. This setting will affect on all missions, so you should handle it carefully. My moon mod changes its year to make 'day 1' full moon day.

I had just come to that conclusion myself by, of all things, matching the star positions for June 21. They still seemed a little off but, since the default year is 2004, I guess that makes sense.

 

This setting will affect on all missions, so you should handle it carefully...

Not something I'm going to play with myself. :) Too bad they didn't make Day 1 = January 1. But I guess that makes sense, too. With their setting, the default date gives you maximum daylight hours.

Right, so, any chance of lunar eclipse in LO? That would be totally awesome! Need to check in C.A.Marriott Sky Map about lunar eclipses and the dates and do some experiments :D Well LO is not really an astronomical soft, so I guess all this is just nice thoughts. One day I'll get my hands on one of the "Meade" cannons, shame UK is not the best place to observe the night sky, especially London with all the city light pollution and "clear sky" in general.Thou I was lucky to eyewitness 1999 total Solar from London, so I saw 97% of totality which was mind blowing, to see 100% you had to be in Cornwall, (my mate went there and saw nothing as it was overcast :( ), one partial and number of total lunar eclipses. Was really in to astronomy 1999-2002, was lucky to observe Saturn, Jupiter and 4 biggest satellites, Venus "the Queen of the morning sky". and still love it. Once you've learned the constellation it's impossible to forget... "Pleiades" (Latin) also known as "Seven Sisters" in English, "Subaru" in Japanese is one of most spectacular piece of night sky. Well, I'm off to stargazing mission... See You there...

Fortunately, I'm blessed with little light pollution. The night sky can be incredibly beautiful out here.

Flask... I fly for a living and have been involved with Eagle Dynamics for about 10 years. If what they develop wasn't any good I wouldn't have been with them for so long. ;)

 

Rich... is Goran still around or is this from times past?

 

As for offline mission competition... HMASP(Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots) was the first of it's kind created by Marek Paul and furthered by Trak Dah... way back in early Flanker days. Those were some fun times and great competition by an international group of Flanker pilots.
