How do you get ASW working with the new Steam Beta for WMR?

I want to use the Steam VR beta setting to change ASW for my HP Reverb, but I'm not sure how to do it. Before I had to change ASW by changing the text (below). Now I hear you just have to delete a line in this text, but which line do I delete and where is the setting in Steam VR to switch ASW on or off? Thank you!

You can ignore all previous advice since the update to WMR for SteamVR yesterday. All MP stuff is now handled by the new WMR tab in SteamVR dashboard.

Oooh, interesting. Do the reprojection effects still cause ghosting?

Yup. Ghosting occurs when you have things turned up too high. Start with supersampling and/or DCS PD set to 100% and 1.0, MSAA off, shadows off, and cockpit displays set at 256 (those are the 4 main things that have an impact on VR performance). You should see minimal or no ghosting at that point. From there, just gradually turn things up until you get a result that's to your liking. I run with 100% SS, DCS PD at 1.0, MSAA at 4X, shadows off, and cockpit displays at 256 and I'm pretty happy with the performance and visuals in my Reverb. YMMV.

Agreed. I’ve always said that the only important factors in VR performance are SS, MSAA and Shadows. Never seen any effect by changing cockpit res myself.

Always just a balance of those 3 to suit your preference. For the record, I run with 200%, off and low.

You guys are confusing.

You talk about ASW with Reprojection.

ASW is an Oculus feature, and is used only regarding Oculus headsets.

Steam Reprojection is a whole other animal. Similar in concept, but different things.

The only time ASW was mentioned was in the original post. As he was talking about the Reverb, all subsequent posts were about Motion Reprojection as we knew what he meant!

The cockpit displays resolution setting affects VR performance depending on the aircraft you fly. It has a pretty dramatic effect on performance with the A-10C, if you have the TGP image on one tube and the MAV image on the other. Haven't noticed any show-stopping difference in clarity of the image on the screens, but it does have a pretty serious impact on the quality of the image in your mirrors when you set it to 256. That's fine with me though, I don't spend much time looking at the mirrors.

Well, it's simply impossible to not have ghosting if reprojection is enabled. Because that is how it works. It creates a fake frame to fill in the gap where a real one should be, and fast moving objects appear to ghost or leave a trail as a result. If reprojection didn't create this side-effect, every game engine on the planet would use it, regardless if it was VR or not. Imagine being able to double your framerate with no performance hit and no image quality hit. Sadly that's impossible.

You simply haven't noticed it - lucky you! I suggest you don't play any other game in VR, where reprojection is only used a fraction of the time for unexpected performance dips. If you do, you'll see how bad VR in DCS is.

Hmm, are you sure about that? As far as I can tell, both ASW and Steam Reprojection are built around the fundamental technology of reprojection:

https://www.oculus.com/blog/introducing-asw-2-point-0-better-accuracy-lower-latency/

Sure, they're *slightly* different, but both have the same negative side effects, and both are designed to be used in worst case scenarios, when there's an unexpected performance decrease. They are not meant to be used 100% of the time, as seen when playing DCS.

Anyone know if I can display the reprojection indicator with the new style dashboard selection, I like the idea of seeing it appear in the top LHS of the screen to know that Microsoft hasnt switched it off again but perhaps I don't need to worry about that anymore?

Yes, the indicator is one of the settings. However, I personally can see no use for it. fpsVR is the way.

Sorry, but as usual, I'm afraid I have to disagree. All personal taste, of course, but from my perspective reprojection works extremely well in DCS. Without it, there are horrible juddery effects of varying frame rates. The jerkiness in guages and dials when moving - not turning - head from left to right, etc. - is the worst aspect of reprojection off. Reprojection smoothes out frame rates in DCS very well, in my opinion, and until we can achieve a solid 90fps, I will continute to sing its praises!

Of course, I understand the theory, that you never get something for nothing, but in practice, I see no down side. Now, that may be a hardware thing, I don't know.

I play many other games in VR apart from DCS, HL:A, Project Cars and Arizona Sunshine to name but 3, and yes, reprojection doesn't play a part in those with a pretty constant frome rate of 90. But, this is DCS we are talking about here.

You can also see if reprojection has been turned off by sitting in the cockpit and just quickly moving your head side-to-side, laterally. If you see smearing of the image, its been turned off again. Come to think of it, reprojection being turned off can also cause the symptoms that Vullcan was seeing, with things in the cockpit looking like Jello.

That's all true, but now, everything is stated clearly in the new WMR tab of SteamVR overlay. Easy to check and change.
