Can't keep up: Mission 2

Recommended Posts

It's me again, and I started having trouble with the climbing and AI's crashing into each other. I will try another repair. I saved a track of mission 3 and will try and post. I could not climb and meet the bombers with the other 51's and I missed all the dogfighting. Hopefully ya'll will have some insight. If i need to post a track and a bug report. Could you point me in the right direction? Like I said before, I am a pilot, not a computer gamer. Any help is appreciated. I wonder if its my version of the 51? I am flying the 25D not the 30.

I just got a PM from another user who had the same issue. I checked the track and he did everything right. He then tested the stock cold start mission and he had the same issue.

As for crashing into each other: I tested some more and I don't see this. I even tried to make my wingmen crash into me by braking suddenly, but they always stopped.

Make sure you have the latest version of the game. Also, don't call ATC to "request taxi to runway". Just go and your wingmen will follow. Sometimes the ATC causes trouble with WWII missions, I don't know why.

Thanks for your diligence on this! I believe the times I had the most issues were when I requested taxi... once, I braked and the trailing plane hit me, but most other times, they just crashed into each other when turning onto the runway after taxi... normally, the crashes happen right before they take off.

Other point to note, I chose to fly the campaign in stable, and not open beta. I'll be restarting the campaign in OB tonight hopefully.

Thanks again,

Reflected, and others,

Thanks again for your tips... I restarted the campaign in OB and I'm pretty sure my issue climbing out was simply due to pilot error. I'm thinking I had the Mustang on full-rich mixture before. Unless there were any other anomalies, this had to be the issue. I was able to keep up with the flight, adjusting MP and RPM.

My first test last night though, started with a wingman crashing into me when I taxied to the runway ;) Granted, my first time in mission two I wasn't taxiing very well... but I really do think the crashing issues are more of a DCS issue than a campaign issue. I saved the track and will IM it to you shortly. But again, given my understanding of the mission designer, I can't see how this would be an issue with the mission.... more likely a DCS bug.

Thanks again for the tips!

I too have issues flying these campaign. I've flown the second mission several times, and still have trouble keeping up with the first flight. I've never been able to break 15K before I am over France. I trim out the plane, use my fuselage and drop tanks first, mixture in auto, coolant in manual, fly with MP 45-50, RPM's 2700. With those settings I can barely maintain 500-1000 fps VSI, with IAS 150-170. Trying to take off and climb I can barely keep the temps in the green and usually overheat the engine. It makes for a disappointing flight when you cant get to 20K and by the time you reach objectives, the action is over.

Any advice I would appreciate.

Thanks,

Lee

I experienced this issue as well. It's almost as if the aircraft doesn't get lighter or there's just no power coming from the engine.

I have a track but it's too big to attach.

Do you have your fuel pump on? Also, make sure your supercharger is set to 'auto'. Otherwise it's gotta be a P-51 bug, or a possible file corruption, in which case a repair helps.

Yes, I ran the startup procedure as normal. I honestly suspect it's a P-51 issue and not a campaign issue as I seem to experience it at random.

I am having a hard time doing this campaign. Getting to alttitude is never going to happen. With my best effort I get to the party late and 3000 ft. to low. When the enemy then drops down to figth. My Fligth never helps. Radio options are gone ,No way I can make my wingmen help. Even with 4 enemys on my tail firing , I have my flight right there in formation with drop tanks.

Studied as much I could on the P 51 D engine settings. But it seems a bit hopeless to try to keep up. And must admit, sometimes I start to root for the German fighters to shoot down my Flight.

I love this Sim, been flying the A 10 C for years.  I kind of hope its a bug or something because if not. Its me being to bad to fly Mustangs.

Well, you need to give me more specifics so that I can help:

1) you mentioned the radio menu being gone. I suspect you1re pressing the comms menu button rather than the radio push to talk button. The former is only available on the ground.

2) Which mission? Is it No.2? As of No.4 you're leading the show so I assume it's one of the first few?

3) What exactly are you doing when starting up/ climbing? I tested, it is possible to keep up as long as you do everything correctly. Make sure you have:

- fuel pump on

- mixture to auto rich NOT emergency rich

- coolers on auto

- aircraft trimmed perfectly

- speed not below 160 mph

- 3000 RPM, 61" MP

Hi Reflected thx for the great Campaign. And warp speed reply. As I feared its mostly me being newbie in the P 51 D. I am currently on mission 3. The First Bomber escort. But had the climbing problem in both 2 and 3.

1. Yes I think you are correct , I may have made the mistake of confusing those Radio buttons.  Thank you

2. If you just did it , then everything works fine. The problem must be somewhere between my PC and my Chair.

3. I do monitor my engine instruments a lot. Keeping the needles in green RPM and MP . And yes I do have mixture on auto rich, coolers on auto. But maybe I can do better.

My trimming I do struggle a bit with, so maybe thats something to work on.

Thank you for the reply and help

Yes sir. You where spot on with the radio, I had the comms menu. But forgot to map the comms push button. Thanks a lot

And now i am convinced youre right about my engine management to. I have been trying with lower RPM and pressure. That was proberly a mistake , and everytime my airspeed has dropped to low also.

Cant thank you enough for the advise . And I just found the wall paper Its really great.

Are you sure your mixture is in auto rich not emergency rich?

For what it's worth, this was my issue. I had miss clicked the mixture lever during startup and had it in emergency rich.

Would explain why I had no power at altitude.

For climbing, you don't want them in the green. You need 3000 RPM and 61" of manifold pressure. Also, make sure you never et your speed drop below 155-160 mph. The AI may tempt you into pulling the nose higher, but don't , you're just pushing air below that speed.

Huge Thanks to Reflected. I tested your Engine and airspeed advise. And It worked like a charm. Again you where spot on. My settings, auto cooler mixture etc. was correct.

BUT if I keep my airspeed above 200 Mph, and not drop it to 160 mph at all - like i did before - . It climbs to 23 000 Ft. like a rocket now 😉 -compared to before-.

And I did not have to lower RPM once. Tried it just now using not under 2700 RPM and 46 " pressure. All the way. And now I can actually arrive to early at the Rendevouz with the bombers.

Top advise Reflected thanks youre the best and again thank you for this campaign

No, it's not that. It's quite possible to keep up with the AI as long as you don't pull your nose too high, don't go below 160 mph, have the aircraft trimmed properly with the ball centered and apply sufficient power and RPM. But this is what I wrote a few posts above. If you record a video I'd be able to give you more specific advice. Good luck!
