Better Trees for Caucasus V6

This mod is tree textures with actual tree and branch photographs for Caucasus. Instead of Speed Tree generated ones.

For ALL seasons.

What's new in V6:

  • Fixed normals that caused dark patches.  Especially visible in FLIR.
  • Reduced flickering further.
  • Improved shapes of some trees.
  • If you want snowless winter trees, just delete all files and folder with "winter" in it.

DOWNLOAD:

INSTALL:

Extract into main DCS directory. OvGME or other Mod Manager recommended.  NOT IC SAFE.

If you have Terrain mod such as CGTC, Barthek's, Mustang's, Starway's.... there will be conflict. Just install this mod last and overwrite. This mod will only replace trees and substrate.

they look great, but in my opinion need a little more color variation and also better blend in the scene. is it possible to improve it in this direction?

 

Was planning on it for spring and fall but not for summer. I think I have too much variation in summer.

They're simply texture swap. In many cases reduced in size as I mentioned so it should be more efficient. My Summer texture pack for example is 9 MB. Default is 35 MB. Most of these reduction comes from reducing normal maps and barks which should not effect visual quality.

Trees are instanced so saving little bit of texture memory wouldn't yield great performance boost but it can't be worse. I haven't done any benchmark but my in game frame rate hasn't changed.

 

I don't even know why these have normal maps. Even billboards. Just default Speed Tree setting they kept. I would get rid of them if I can but I can't.

 

These look a lot better in VR than in the screenshots in my opinion. I'm having a lot of fun flying over them.

my findings: smooth, more pleasant to the human eye, extremely fluid (track IR user), no flickering (looking around and zooming in for example with the KA50 shkval). Definitely no impact on frames... I recommend your trees whatever senery mod people may use. Currently I use them with Starways latest 2.5.8 release.

 

 

 

I use it with shadows flat, MSAA 4x, Anisotropic 16x, trees max

Looking great! And if you reduced file size by 4 times it should definitely increase performance!

leaves are dark in the summer, this is great improvement over stock trees.

 

I originally had it darker as all the references I found them to be dark. But I knocked it back down because I think people are used to faded default trees. Myself included.

I've been tinkering with trees too when working on my ground textures. The problem is that the forests and trees in urban areas use the same textures but a different shading. Hence - if you darken the forests, the trees in cities and villages will be much darker. The key is to find a good balance between them.

Excellent idea, really well executed, we all have slightly different perspectives on what looks best so a bit of compromise is always required, I'm looking forward to your improvements.

 

Well done mate, I know how much work goes into this kind of Mod, I have played around with the vfs textures a bit myself and its not an easy thing to do or get absolutely right. :thumbup:

You know when you think there's something wrong with a picture but can't really point out what it is? I think I found it.

 

When the Sun is low, I was wondering why the shadowing on the distant billboard trees are reversed. I reverted to default tree and it does same thing. I tried reversing the normal map and voila. Not only that, incorrect normal map was masking the details from the billboard image texture.

 

Now I gotta fix all the normal maps.
