SLI for VR? Or wait for 3080?

Hi, would it be best to wait for the new 3080? Or invest in another 2080ti to max out my VR experience? I have pre ordered a G2 reverb.....

Looking online, using SLi does not yield a doubling of performance, ( more like 25% gain average...) but none of the benchmarks were using DCS....

Of course if the answer is go 3080, what do I do with my year old 2080ti......?? hmmmmm

Cheers

DCS doesn´t take advantage of SLI. Only people who ever benefit from SLI is Nvidia investors.

Worst bang for the buck ever.

Your 2080Ti manages DCS fine, it´s the ingame engine itself what bottlenecks your system. Yours or anyone else, there is no PC to max out DCS VR while having a decent performance ;) G2 image quality would be best though.

2080Ti Vs. 3080? As of today none knows for sure, you would like to study objective reviews as soon as the 3080 hits the market.

The solution is definitely not to throw more hardware at the problem. A 2080Ti should really be fine for DCS. The problem is that DCS needs VR optimization.

Well mate, if you're really considering yet another 2080ti or yet to be released 3080, you might as well burn a few thousand quids in a new car while waiting for your G2, or Vulkan, although I doubt you didn't do it already. Keep it flowing! :D

SLI never worked with VR

Actually, I've noticed improvements on my old machine with 2 GTX 1080's instead of one.

On that machine I had about a 25% increase in framerate using SLI.

Currently using a 2080 Ti 11G OC and its great, but do think that if there was a second one in the system there would be performance gains, especially at 4K resolutions...

So you really think investing about $3000 and moving from 40fps to 50fps on my Rift S is worth it.

Again, $3000. Nvidia marketing bosses are very happy with your input hehehe

I have a 1080 (not a 1080ti) and in fpsvr, the gpu side of things is pegged red in "middle settings" whereas the cpu side of things (i-9700k intel) isn't breaking out a sweat. I run the valve index and found to get smooth vr I have to turn most things down and run at 90mhz. If I do that I can unusually be around 43-45 fps. That does sacrifice clarity particularly at distance. With things optimized in my settings the GPU side of fpsvr stays in the high yellow/orange.

However, I did not invest thousands in everything from software to hardware to work at the low end of eye candy for the sake of smoothness. So if those 3080's will give me the VR sim experience I've been dreaming of all my long life, I am going for it.

Thanks...I guess I will wait and see what core engine improvements DCS will bring over the coming months.....was just trying to plan ahead.....

SLI is not supported. Vulcan will allow for it, however ED will need to choose to implement it.

Certainly do not invest in SLI for VR.

Best to get as powerful a GPU and CPU that you can.

Out of curiosity, do you mean individual eyeset rendering or normal SLI? If it's the first, that'd be really interesting.

Thats up to NVIDIA.

With your specs, why worry about not having enough muscle for the G2, when you can run the G2 at half resolution and it still looks great? I’ll be using a 2070 Super, and should have no problems, according to MRTV.

Well I really have no idea how great it will look in half resolution.

I am hoping I can run it in full at an acceptable rate. Coming from Rift S I am hoping to see a nice improvement in quality of image.

See MRTV’s video in YouTube showing half resolution.

Um, hate to say it but that guy doesn't really talk about the issues with VR. I own a Reverb, and never use it due to the extremely poor image quality. And if I want half decent detail, the frame rate is terrible. I'm hoping the 3090 will deliver 60fps so I can run the Reverb at 60Hz and get rid of motion reprojection, otherwise I wasted AU$1200 based on the recommendation of people in this forum.

+1 Aurelius. People, SLI/crossfire + DCS is a no go...let's not keep beating the dead horse.

Maybe with the new generation of intel chips, coupled with the Nvidia 3090, we might get 30fps again on a decently complicated mission in VR (crossing both fingers)...at least on the old Caucus's map. Of course, they'll add something much needed like "improved" AI or "improved" pathfinding or "improved" SSLR, and we'll be back to sub 20fps which seems like it may be a standard considering the stutterfest that is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 even in flat world 2d.

The only time when SLI was worth it was when it still was a 3dfx thing.

As others said, doesn't work with VR, doesn't work with DCS, so at least here it's it's just a waste of money. You'd be better off buying me a 2080ti instead and have my eternal gratitude fsgrin.png

BTW back in the day I had the X1800XT and bought a CrossFire Master later on which literally doubled my frame rate in most games. That worked! Never heard that about nVidia multi-GPU solutions though...
