F-18 Style Stick on a Budget?

Recommended Posts

Quick follow up, sorry to double post:

The Suncom Talon looks good but I've seen that alot of people are refurbishing them. Will a simple game port to usb adapter be servicable for the stick? Or is taking it apart a requirement?

Rewire, new USB Controller, sensors (and even new gimbal) is requirement.*

Gameport to USB adapters (an old 1999 tech 8 bits device) in this old "pass thru keyboard" HOTAS, will give you 2 axis and 2/4 buttons.

* Probable the more easy/speed way is use only Suncom grip, wired, for example in T.16000M base.

Thanks. I take it the gameport to usb will not allow keyboard commands to be passed through?

No support for keyboard emulation, Gameport to USB adapters just emulate some joysticks, being old - appear around 2000 when they became necessary due transition for USB; typically emulate the "entry-level" reference joystick of the time, like:

CH Flighstick: 3 axes, POV HAT, 4 buttos.

Thrustmaster FCS: 2 axes POV HAT, 4 buttons.

Generic gamepad: 4 axes, 6 buttons (not sure).

The "best" adapter is considered Rockfire RM-203 (or their clones).

See here how RM-203 clone transform a "2 axes + 18 buttons joystick (Thrustmaster F22PRO) + 4 axes + 10 buttons + mouse throttle (TQS) + 1 axis rudder pedal (RCS) HOTAS in a...

"4 axes + 4 buttons HOTAS". :))

In Reddit are reference for "Manhatten" gameport to USB adapter, allegedly with better support, for example for all buttons CH Combatstick (3 axes, POV HAT, 10 buttons), but for me look likes another RM-203 clone.

BTW - By less than the cost of RM-203 you buy a Arduino PRO Micro (ATMEGA32u4, 16MHZ, 5v) ~$5 in eBay/Aliexpress, flash with MMjoy2 firmware (a 5 minutes job) and have a modern USB controller with support for 8 axes, up to 128 buttons, but this approach require DIY skill - ability to make solder and tolls.
