Anyone planning on getting the 3090 for VR?

Recommended Posts

I skipped the nvidia 20 series and am thinking on going big on the 30 series this time round - currently running 1080ti.

Just wondering with all the CPU limitations in DCS whether anyone who is thinking about the nvidia 3090 reckons we would see a decent performance uplift. Or will the DCS engine just hold back the GPU?

I do play other VR games so it would not go too waste but DCS VR is my prime reason for upgrading.

Prohibitive cost.

I will wait for reviews in any case. I think a faster CPU is much more important.

My 1080Ti drives my G1 in singleplayer or in the air with supersampling. Very flyable.

For the low multiplayer FPS and complex mission low FPS a 3090 will do nothing.

Perhaps I go with a 3080 and upgrade CPU when available.

Looks as though the 3080 will only come with 10Gb of ram so I dont really want lose ram with the next upgrade. DCS seems to at least allocate most of the Vram of the 1080ti.

Maybe wait for the 3080ti which may come out after the AMD cards

I am carefully considering it.

Not sure though, will wait and way my options once the EVGA cards are announced.

While I may not know which model I will get, I do know it will be EVGA. Been with them a long time and they

have never let me down.

I was under the impression that new NVIDIA cards would ship with 20GB VRAM? Or was that just a rumor?

Latest rumor I have heard says 20\24 GB ram for the top tier card.

The 3080 a measly 10GB.

That would make it a pretty pricy mother I'm afraid.

Probably too rich for me.

It's also not certain they will even announce the 90 next week, that depends on the quality of the yields, pricing etc etc.

And that might not be decided until 3 minutes before curtain.

My 1080ti is still holding up ok, but I have been eyeing an upgrade.

My 1080ti is also chucking along nicely in DCS... no issues.

But, I am planning on upgrading my PC (motherboard, RAM, CPU, CPU cooler, NVME drive, and video card) towards the end of the year, and I really don't want to go with a GPU that has the same amount of VRAM my current one has...

currently thinking about the 3080. But really depends on how much nVidia will extort us for the 3090 (and the other cards).

in either case, I'll await the EVGA cards as well. I've had great luck with 'em too!

I've heard in the neighborhood of $1400 for the 3090 with 24gig of VRAM. Yeouch!! I will not be buying that anytime soon. Happy with my 2080ti for the moment.

That’s the same price as the 2080Ti, which I see you bought!

Yep, count me in on the 3090 as soon as I can preorder.

I have a 1080 (not ti) and a i-9700k processor/32GB ram and all SSDs. fpsvr clearly shows i'ts the graphics card holding things back on my system.... for normal (single player) missions, my cpu hardly breaks a sweat. But the graphics card is reprojection city and running in the red. And that is with practically all graphics settings cranked down.

I'm running my Valve Index at 80mhz. It can do so much more... with the right graphics card.

PS: I like things smooth - I hate micro stutters. I get that now, but the cost is I trade most graphics goodies to get it.

So while I will wait for some reviews, if it pushes the boundaries for dcs, I'm in.

The 2080ti launched at $1000, or $1200 for the FE.

That's not $1400.

And it was still too expensive.

I bought exactly the same 2080ti as Notso has shortly after it launched, and it was $1350.00. So, Imacken is pretty close to being right on. Not sure why we're splitting hairs though.

If the 3090 does end up coming with memory in the neighborhood of 20-24GB, $1400.00 would be a bargain. The only card right now with that much VRAM is the RTX Titan, and it will set you back $2500.00. I've heard that the extra VRAM makes a big difference in VR performance, but I don't know for a fact that it does...just a rumor that seems logical.

I will likely go the 3090 route, a lot depends on the actual specs but it seems likely that it will be an improvement over the 1080ti, as someone else observes, my cpu is fine, the place I’m bottle necked is the GPU... according to FPSvr

That last part is my only note of caution, I honestly don’t know if the cpu numbers reported represent single or multiple cpu cores, if that’s a single core then all is bottle necked at the gpu, if that cpu frame time is based on all the cores, it might not be accurate.

Either way. I know that people with otherwise similar hardware and a 2080ti get better performance than I do, and from the current rumours we have the 3090 will out perform the 2080ti, so it will likwky translate better in game performance... or better graphical settings.

I'm not sure it will be enough to allow no motion projection, but it might be enough to minimise it's use...

On my current settings I get between 12 and 18ms over the Cacucuses so I should if rumors are correct see that drop to something like 7 and 10ms (ish) which should result in very good perf on my current settings.

So yes I will likely be buying one, it's a little more expensive than I was expecting, but it also seems to have a lot more memory so I can live with that. Certainly I'm showing myself very close to 90% utilisation of ram, and I can't help but think that because it will save 10% for other processes or swapping operations, so it feels like y this and the improved bandwidth will also have a major impact on dcs perf...

I share your concern about CPU, Stuart.

Lots of people look at the overall fpsVR CPU usage and think, I’m ok here. However, looking at the individual core readings in fpsVR tells a very different story.

I’ve got a 10900K, and still, under certain circumstances, I see frames going below 45 even though GPU is less than 20ms and the overall CPU is in the teens as well. This is because a single core is being stressed at 100%.

Most of the time, however, I am GPU bound, so the 3090 should fix that. But, it’s not going to be until we get Vulkan that the CPU issue will be resolved.

Roll on 2021!

Yes, this, I just don't know, what the frame time is of when we are talking about cpu. But agree Ed Vulkan hopefully will smooth some of the cpu issues we are seeing

I hope so. Briefly mentioning another game - beginning with Red and ending in 2 - which uses Vulkan, I never see any CPU core stress. (Non VR, obviously.) Totally GPU bound. Hopefully, DCS will be the same and the 3090 will solve the GPU issue.

Why do we see low fps in multiplayer fps, low fps on the ground and low fps in complex missions. Bound by GPU? You will see unbelievable VR fps while looking at the empty sky for sure.

Perhaps AI and multiplayer code will run on the tensor cores?

I wait for the reviews.

player objects typically have higher poly counts, complex missions tend to have higher over all poly counts because more objects
