Well I think i have about decided to save the money and just get the 3080 card.

I will be going with EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra whenever I can get one.

Hate to go backwards in Vram though, my 2080 Ti has 11 GB.

Yeah possible, depends on how patient I can be lol.

I so wanted to try and get a 3090 at first, but more I read the more I just could not justify that price difference.

I am thinking along the same lines as you guys.

My intention is to wait until October and wait and see what the 6900 XT is like. While I think that it will be good I am not expecting it to surpass the 3080, except in memory capacity. There might be specific titles where it outperforms, but I doubt if it will be even a marginal win, let alone a significant win overall. It might be a bit cheaper, but even then if we are talking c.$100 difference I would rather get the higher performing card, regardless of a fairly small price difference. AMD does have ray tracing (not that I care), but it's implementation of DHSS is not as powerful as DHSS 2.0 yet. So big advantage to Nvidia there. And overall Nvidia's software support is stronger. This might well change over the years with software development done primarily for these new consoles but by the time that has happened it will be GPU upgrade time again.

The 3080 / 20 will be interesting for sure, but if the 6900 XT does not clearly beat the 3800 / 10 then I imagine NVidia will be quite greedy on the pricing of that card, especially considering how high the demand was at the 3080 / 10's launch.

Meanwhile I am not yet convinced that 20GB of GDDR6X or 16GB of GDDR6 is necessary for DCS at 4K. 10GB will probably be fine. Even if you find yourself hitting GPU memory limits all it takes is the lowering of one of two settings and you are back to the races.

I will probably get a 3080 / 10. Either the beautifully designed Founders Edition, a Strix or a FTW3. But I still want to wait and see what 6900 XT is like. ... besides... I wasn't as fast as the bots on launch day!

One of the labs downstairs has a 3090 which they use for SC. They let me install DCS for kicks and we got to play around just a little bit (about 2 hours). In DCS the RTX 3090 averages about 41% faster than the 2080 Ti overall with the Reverb. Not enough, at least for me personally, to justify spending $1800 or more.

You don't think 41% is a big enough jump for a card that costs about £200 or £300 more than the 2080 Ti did?

If that number is correct, I am counting the days till my 3090 pre-order drops!

Have to agree, only 41% faster in dcs on a reverb... Well gosh that's a shame, but I think I will live... Also hope that number is right

Would be interesting to see though how that compares with a 3080 running the exact same settings. I mean we are talking close to 1K USD difference between the two.

So if say the 3090 is 41% faster than 2080 Ti and 3080 is 35% faster , then for that price diff I would go 3080.

I had opportunity this morning to grab an EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra, but backed out. That big price diff was just too much with what little we know, at least for me.

No, not if a 3080 can provide nearly the same experience for 110% less.

It makes no sense, but if you've got money to burn go for it. Just don't try to sell anyone else on it, because it's pointless.

The original MRSP of the 2080 Ti was supposed to be $999 but was actually more like $1240 for much of the last 2 years. Now, the MSRP for the 3090 is $1500 but it will actually sell in the $1750 to $2200 price range. (I fully expect an EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra to be in the $2000 price range) Top graphics cards just 5 years ago cost $550 to $600 but they now cost $1800?! I think Nvidia has done a masterful job of convincing the world that the 3080 at $900 is the new normal and $1800 for the top end is perfectly acceptable which I think is absurd for only 41% better. Unless I can finagle one or two of these for free through some tech partnership, there is no way I will be spending my own cash on a 3090.

MSRP this morning on the EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra was 1800 USD.

MSRP on the EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra is 800 bucks.

I just do not believe there is a thousand bucks worth of performance diff between the two.

Sure you get 24 GB of Vram, but who would need it for gaming.

Well, we're beginning to split hairs here, but I can't comment on US prices. Certainly in the UK, the difference on a like-for-like basis is around £700.

Just to add that the EVGA ultra Gaming 3080 is £900 here, around $1150.

Again, showing how our prices are different, the 2080 Ti sells for between £1100 and £1400, and the 3090 is between £1450 and £1750.

Crickey... that sounds like an advert for the 3090. :megalol:

We really need the fps number for a 3080 in same test conditions to put that in greater perspective.

Yeah, at this point its wait and see IMO. I was hoping for a decent boost in DCS VR performance from a 3090, but if its not coming, well, I can wait. Though TBH I'm pretty leery that the AMD card is gonna "kill" performance wise. Price/performance though is where my bet is.

If thats really true, it piques my interest. If it means near 90fps (I'm sitting at 50-60 on some maps) Or a stable 45fps on syria which is like 30s in MP.

Well if anybody is desperate, cdw.com takes preorder so you're guaranteed to have it. Of course the shipping time could be a month or two from now.

What I don't understand is why doesn't anybody else allow preordering (especially NVIDIA). That way people can preorder whatever they want and just wait for their item to ship. The way they're doing it right now is a mess and creates unnecessary frenzy demands and well as scalping situations.

The first reviews say that 3090 is only 20% faster than 3080; for a more than doubled price over 3080, it's the worst investment ever.

No. No. No.

More like 10% in the best case scenario of 4K gaming. 18% only in benchmarking. It is all in the thread already, if you bother to read it. (Or read or listen to the numerous reviews out there.

So, how did the bots that are now selling these things on Ebay for 2-3 times what they're worth manage to get them before any retailers had them available for purchase? Something fishy is going on with this whole thing.

Its BS. Let em sit. Eventually supply at normal prices will catch up. I've heard people are absurdly bidding up the stuff on Ebay, just mess with the scammers, with 0 intention of actually paying it.

The premise is that these "dudes" spent like 10-25+K on credit buying up these cards at 1500 ea. They need to "flip" the cards for substantially more. Otherwise their "creditors" will eat them alive if they can't quickly flip most of their inventory. So really time is on your side. They will increasingly get desperate and be willing to sell for less and less. Which is why folks are bidding them up and not paying.

Heh. I clicked on one of the 3090s being sold by the scammers, and apparently they don't even have the cards themselves. It says they will order one from the manufacturer and ship it within 2 days of getting it. LMAO! Hopefully its like you say and people are just bidding to mess with them. I hope nobody is falling for it. The other weird thing about that particular seller is that they somehow have managed to maintain an almost 100% positive rating in spite of pulling scams like this. :megalol:
