Ooooo - a new nvidia card without the price hike?

Recommended Posts

I just need some confirmation i didnt mis-see the Big Nvida announcement.

RTX3070 for £449?

RTX3080 for $799?

RTX3090 with 24GB of Vram for $1499?

2080 trouncing performance accross the board?

This is actually much better than expected right?

Will be available September 17th according to Nvidia website. All is nice except for 3090. Not sure if its meant to be replacement for Titan or 2080Ti, but in case of latter one it's another instance of raising price by Nvidia.

The 90 is this generation's "Titan".

GeForce RTX 3090 — At the top of the stack is the RTX 3090, priced at $1,499 and referred to as the “BFGPU” — Big Ferocious GPU. It even comes with a silencer — a three-slot, dual-axial, flow-through design that is up to 10x quieter than the TITAN RTX and keeps the GPU up to 30 degrees C cooler. Its 24GB of GDDR6X memory can tackle the toughest AI algorithms and feed massive, content creation workloads. The RTX 3090 is up to 50 percent faster than the current ultimate PC graphics card, TITAN RTX, enabling gamers to experience 60 fps in 8K resolution across many top games.

Well it was all TITAN this and TITAN that in the presentation. No mention of the 2080Ti. And with double the VRAM I wonder if there will still be a place left in the line-up for a 16Gb VRAM Ti given the $800 gap between the 3080 and 3090.

It was Titan in presentation but last time Nvidia sold Titan, it was 2500 $. This one looks like 2080Ti replacement on steroids that wants to be Titan. From previous leaks it seems that even 3090 isn't a full chip but a cutdown.

I'm sure Nvidia hides more to keep everything under control.

I'm a bit skeptical on pricing. 2080ti was supposed to be a $1000 card but good luck finding it under $1200-1400 when it hit and even until now.

But, I hope to be pleasantly surprised. Also, waiting/hoping for a 3080 Super/Ti with 16-20Gb vRAM.

Nvidia is playing the safe game with this release, just like the rumours pointed to.

There's a huge gap left open between the RTX3080 and the RTX3090...

...my bet is after AMD released the RDNA 2 cards, the RTX3080Ti will be announced, with either 16GB or 20GB VRAM and a price of 999.99 USD/EUR. :P That's right folks, you heard it here first! wink.gif

I'm surprised about the "announced" prices though, less expensive than the rumours would make believe. thumbup.gif

But then the RTX3070 is confirmed to have only 8GB VRAM... :noexpression: now that's really disapointing. Should have been at least 10GB for the RTX3070, and at least 12GB for the RTX3080.

PS: here's an upside.... RTX2080Ti has imediatelly dropped value! :D Used ones most likely won't be worth more than 600-something USD/EUR now!

Yes, people will be better controlling expectations. Remember how it was for Pascal years back:

  • the GTX 1080 was announced for 599,00 USD/EUR but then was found at about 750,00 USD/EUR when all was said and done.
  • the GTX 1070 was announced for 379,00 USD/EUR but none would be found under 490,00 USD/EUR (if you could find any, that is).

So, if looking at these RTX3000s on release, one would be better to expect a minimum of 100,00 USD/EUR added to those announced prices, once everything such as taxes and profit margins are included, and/or the usual inflated prices for early adopters by sellers everywhere.

And 3090 £1399 for Founders Edition. So the 3090 is expensive, yet at £649 the 3080 is actually very competitively priced. This suggests that Nvidia priced the 3080 to fend off Big Navi / RDNA2. Whereas maybe they are quite confident that 3090 cannot be touched so they don't have to try so hard on the price.

That is one hell of a price gap between 3080 and 3090. Certainly also suggests room in the stack for a 20GB GDDR6X option between the 10GB and 24GB.

No. The Pascal (1000 series) were announced in May 2016, and released over a month later. The mining craze started early to mid 2017.

Good luck ordering one from the Nvidia website. If it's anything like it was in 2016 with Pascal, there'll be very few for so many interested people (then wait and hunt for them in stores, priced ridiculously higher than the announced price).

No price hike there. But a huge devaluation for 2080 ti owners.

I feel sorry for 2080Ti owners right now, sort of. The 30 series is the biggest jump we have seen in performance since Pascal. While in the past I have always gone for the best bang for buck which has been the x70 series of cards like my 1070 this time around I think I will go for Nvidia's most powerful non Titan card being the 3080 which I expect will be a huge jump over the 2080Ti and certainly a far greater jump than the rather pedestrian performance increase we saw from the 1080Ti to the 2080Ti while also incurring a ridiculous price hike. So glad I gave Nvidia's Turing architecture a miss.

3090 is a Titan card but if you look at its price compared to previous Titans it is actually pretty decently priced.

Also I would not be surprised in the slightest if Nvidia release a 3080Ti or something down the track with more VRAM as you suggested. That is standard Nvidia SOP.

if the 3080 has 10gb of vram on it - great for VR users then I'm assuming they'll throw 16gb or so on the Ti variant. Impresssivr. I need to start looking into a larger PSU lol I'd still like to see how Navi compares with RDNA2 before pulling the string on one.

With my current 1080Ti, MSI Afterburner reports that all 11Gb of VRAM and nearly all 32GB of system RAM are in use while on PG or Syria maps. Though I'm just beginning to realize that, with regards to system RAM anyway, Afterburner is reporting RAM that's pre-reserved, and actual RAM in use is lower, I haven't found a way to verify if my VRAM is truly all being used or if it's simply reserved by the game.

If my VRAM usage really is that high, I'm concerned about the drop from 11GB to 10GB of VRAM on the 3080. It seems like a very strange choice to go down in VRAM... It's the only thing that gives me pause about the new card!

The only way to know for sure is if you get stuttering. I tried the same DCS settings on my son's PC (1660 super) compared to my PC (was a 1070) and in each case it was 'using' almost all of the RAM, but gameplay was the same performance, no stuttering. If Nvidia is releasing with 8GB/10GB of RAM it's because they are confident that that's all that you need. This obsession with more and more VRAM is getting as stupid as the 12 blade razor nonsense.

There will be dummies though buying used 1080/2080 ti's and paying ridiculous prices just because they have 11GB of RAM. The 3070 will beat or meet the 2080ti for $499. What kind of simple-minded idiot then buys a used 2080ti for more than $300 at this point? Suckers born every minute I guess...

Because of the way the GDDR6X chips are packaged I think 20GB is the more likely intermediate step than 16GB.

Big Navi will only be using slower GDDR6, not the GDDR6X being used on the Nvidia 3080 and 3090. But regardless of the memory bandwidth the rumours are that the top of the Big Navi stack will be in the same ballpark, performance wise, to the 3080. However AMD is likely having to pay TSMI more for silicon than Nvidia is paying Samsung. So AMD might have to take more of a hit to its gross margin if it wants to pressure Nvidia's pricing.

I think you can always tweak settings to use less VRAM if you find DCS using more than 10GB. Of course no one will want to buy a 3080 only to have to lower settings. But given that the 3080 is so fast and the 3090 costs more than twice as much then maybe lowering just a few settings to avoid exceeding 10GB is probably the smart move.

Me... I can see me talking myself into a 3090. Oh dear!

:pilotfly::joystick:

And yeah... my 2080 Ti has depreciated very quickly. But my previous 980 Ti suddenly died on my forcing me to upgrade to something. And I've had two years fun with the 2080 Ti. I didn't buy it expecting not to lose money on it. Perhaps we've been spoiled with used sales prices on a lot of consumer tech recently due to shortages? (I sold my Rift S after 18 months use for what I paid for it, thanks to Half Life!)

One final thought. With these new generation graphics cards, Intel CPUs being currently limited to PCIe3 actually becomes a bottleneck.
