2080Ti vs RTX 3090 for VR

Harlikwin, eatthis and all other enthusiasts, I really can't go into more detail than I have without attracting the many predatory lawyers who make their home in California. (As you can probably tell, I am none too fond of an occupation that makes money off other people's car accidents, hospital stays, divorces, deaths, criminal charges, business failings and enjoyment of high end computing hardware.) I am mentioning the Ryzen 5XXX processors and Big Navi cards simply because many of you may be considering upgrading over the holidays and want to know if these upcoming AMD parts are truly competitive or will be a let down that fall into the sub-mediocre range (like the 5700 XT). Ryzen 5XXX and Big Navi are the real deal. In particular, 5XXX processors can be mated to X570 motherboards which will give you true PCIe 4.0 bandwidth and the RX 6900 XT is going to initially sell for $1000 (and supposedly have real stock) versus the outrageous $1750 that RTX 3090 would have likely settled to by ~ March of 2021 without real competition. I suspect early 2021 will see things heat up in ernst with resulting price drops and more options for everyone. That is about as much as I can say safely at this point.

Well, lawyers aside. I'm curious what you meant by the differences in rendering/spotting between the two. I find it interesting that there would be any difference in that.

Also any comments on the differences in total memory between the 3090 and 6900 and if that might make any difference in DCS?

Did a online flight this evening, on [Aerobatics Online Kaukasus]. There was 40 or more aircrafts(of 70) and I only flew formation flight with others for 13 minutes exept for engine start and take off and landing.

What we can see is that the frame times and CPU/GPU loads are not that different and that my computer isnt CPU or GPU bond but instead being the limit shifts between the CPU and GPU.

Im quite sure the highest numbers on the CPU comes from the numerous screenshots I took. I do not think the CPU would have been above 22ms(=45fps) at anytime except for the screenshots.

AEROB-ONLINE.thumb.png.364349082c8eef50ccd370e9c4ad07bb.png

I guess that 40 aircrafts and flying around with 10 other aircrafts rather close should be somewhere like the typical multiplayer mission when it comes to CPU and GPU load.

What about a highly scripted online multiplayer server mission, with multiple targets, objectives, FAPRs, ground troops, carriers, tanks, SAM sites, etc. etc?

That to me is the typical multiplayer server/environment.

Try set the visib range to at least high or ultra. Might take a hit on fps, but I think it'll work.

The eye seight value 20/20 is at longer range, are you sure you se very sharp at let say 1,5 to 2 m?

I have >20/20 at range(airforce pilot) but due to age the close visual is degraded so I use reading glasses to read. With Oculus Rift and HP Reverb I see very sharp but recently I got the Pimax 8KX which has the focal length somewhere below 1m. I need reading glasses in these to see sharp. Without it is quite blurry. The focal distance in the Index is probably more then in the Pimax, and I would guess about 2m, thats the reason to check how sharp you se at 2m.

i dont know what my short range vision is like. i have eye tests every year or 2 and get glasses to suit. i can read fine with them but really small print is a pain

BTW, does anyone know which graphical settings are CPU bound and which are GPU bound?

It of course depends on what CPU and at which clock speed together with what GPU at which clock speed.

And what you play, a highly crowded server or single player.

And which VR Headset you run.

And of course its not only one setting but the combination of settings.

Joke #1 of the day:

An engineer died and was mistakenly sent to hell. Fairly quickly, he had redesigned the place. Hell cooled down considerably thanks to the air conditioning he built and installed. The escalators and elevators worked just fine. Manual labor was quickly becoming a thing of the past.

God looked down one day and noticed all the changes. He called down to the devil to ask how these improvements came about.

The devil replied, “That engineer you sent me.”

“What engineer? You’re not supposed to have an engineer. Send him back up here!”

The devil’s answer was simple… “No.”

“If you don’t send that engineer back right now, I’m going to be very angry. In fact, I’ll sue you!”

The devil replied, “And . . . where are you going to get a lawyer?”

I work in an FAA repair station and got a few good chuckles from our engineers with that one...

That to me is the typical multiplayer server/environment.

So like on Bluflag, I find that it highly depends where you are. I.e. BF syria, near an airbase both the CPU/GPU get hammered baaad. Huge frame times for both. In the air typically its CPU limited in my case, but I still get decent enough frame times, usually at or under 22ms, and typically I'm pulling ~60fps at altitude. And worse down low.

Looks like you’ll probably beat me by about a week. FalconNW got my 5950x today. The rest of the system was already built, so with 3 days of testing, it should be shipped out early next week. Since it has to cross the whole country by ground, I’ll be lucky to get it a week from now. More likely a week from Monday.

No Harlikwin, you will not see any detailed info until Dec 8th when the NDAs release.

Rogue, you just happen to be purchasing your system as viable competition has arisen. One really nice thing about the 6900 XT is the way in which it "ghosts". I find it easier in VR to see a WW2 fighter than I do with DCS + Nvidia code. I have not had a chance to pin it down yet but "it appears" that Big Navi works better with Windows Mixed Reality than Nvidia. Can't say more now but that is my initial impression.

This is a very good "theory :smilewink:" indeed, also because some VR headsets have AMD chipsets inside.

Been working on my GPU overclock on my new 3090 FTW3 Ultra.

Looks like I am settling in at +169 on the GPU clock, looking good stressing it in Time Spy.

Looks like GPU temp topping out around 60c. Not bad at all.

Max Power draw total on my rig I am seeing is around 670w at peaks. EVGA T2 Titanium 1000w seems to be handling it like a pro.

Will work on the mem clock some tomorrow.

Great job! I'm also eagerly awaiting your feedback in performance combined with your G2, once you receive it of course... I just got a notice from Amazon Spain telling the HMD delivery was delayed, but with no further date.
