DCS Causing SteamVR Fail | Description, evidence and how to replicate

What vid card do you have?

Is this after updating to DCS 2.7.0.5659? Did DCS 2.7.0.5659 ever work for you and now suddenly happening, or you never got DCS 2.7.0.5659 working?

Edit: Given this isn't happening to the masses, I would suggest the following anytime something like this happens:

1) Go into mission editor and launch a blank mission with no weather/clouds to see if anything at all is working

not enough...

2) Close SteamVR, Steam and WMR Portal, ideally just reboot machine

not enough...

3) Update Graphics Card Drivers

not enough...

4) Rename Saved Game/DCS(.openbeta) and try booting the game just to see if that has any effect. If not, put it back, otherwise, put it back and delete Config/options.lua and redo the options, one by one to narrow down issue.

5) Try WMR for SteamVR and SteamVR in both Beta and non-Beta and cross fingers

Just my .02 and the first 4 things I try...

Yes I am on the beta of WMR for Steam VR.

Ok opted out of the beta of WMR for Steam VR, and also out of the beta of Steam VR, now DCS is running fine for me in my Reverb G2.

I suspect the beta of WMR is the problem.

It's crazy right, I'm getting better performance with it, and it's killing you... that's why I added switching from one to the other in my checklist because... there's no rhyme or reason. Glad you're back up and running.

I still can't run reprojection on WMR with SteamVR. I did a reddit post and it seems it's a few games that trigger the crash. The WMR team didn't respond as yet and the SteamVR did post a 'Try nvidia driver version 457.30?' (it didn't help). After re-installing Win10 yesterday I've pretty much given up. I'll run DCS without reprojection, it's not great but it's not unusable. So weird how there doesn't seem to be a common thing that causes it. I guess I'll just wait it out for new SteamVR (which I think is the culprit) releases and try them as they come out.

The best clue on the issue is in here that I raised at the Steam forum:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/250820/discussions/3/3172198151252196351/

The Steam vrcompositor.txt logs show:

Sun May 09 2021 19:06:17.173 - Error: Aborting WaitForPresent after 1.000000 seconds! TimeSinceLastVSync: 1128.204346(64132)
Sun May 09 2021 19:06:18.293 - Error: Aborting WaitForPresent after 1.000000 seconds! TimeSinceLastVSync: 2248.324951(64132)
Sun May 09 2021 19:06:18.400 - Render thread ending
Sun May 09 2021 19:06:18.400 - Signal thread ending
Sun May 09 2021 19:06:18.409 - VR compositor shutting down

..so some sort of hang, perhaps caused by WMR reprojection crashing out.

The whole thing is utter garbage, and HP has lost serious points with me. If I wasn't so lazy I would have returned it. I was thinking of creating a channel themed "Through the lenses", abd just record, through the lenses, what it's like to own one of these and click any title and watch the misery ensure, just to highlight how much agony there is and how it, at least for me, drastically offsets the enjoyment of the device. Black screens, one eye failed, steam VR fail, sparkles, bad cables. This isn't a DCS issue. Some titles are far worst than others, begging the question of where to throw the blame when. Owning one of these things reminds me of owning a boat. Every time I turn the key, what's it going to be today? Bad tachometer, spark plug, water in the gas line, whatever... just doesn't end. I could care less whether the issue is SteamVR related or HW related, they're selling me a solution, and I expect them to work with their eco-system partners to make that solution useful and a success. So far, that's anything from the case. It's usually just a matter of killing everything down to WMR portal and firing it back up, back Jesus, hit the window key by mistake, steam dashboard pops up, game goes to hell... Alyx fails to load sometimes at the end of levers, beat saber will stutter to hell and then suddenly work fine for 2 days. Games just stop working, change from beta to non-beta, do a cartwheel, handstand on one hand, oh, it's working again. I've never had any issue with "native" apps, or WMR portal itself, so I'm personally 90% convinced SteamVR for WMR is an abortion of software and the real issue here. Even when things go to hell, controller tracking goes to sh!t or whatever, when hitting the windows button, the windows menu is perfect, the controller tracking is suddenly perfect, hence I'm fairly certain it's steam.

Big call out to have DCS leverage OpenXR directly rather than steam!!!

So far no problem running Steam VR reprojection on my end, on and forced to 45 fps for my G2 working ok.

Just had to opt out of the beta of WMR for Steam VR.

Hope they get that sorted before it gets pushed to release version.

Mine worked from since I got the Reverb, so at least 9 months. Then about 5 weeks ago, always crashes. It's really weird and I'm definitely in the minority of it happening, but no luck in tracking down what is causing it. Could be hardware I guess, some tolerance etc.

I'm in the same boat as you.  Doesn't matter if I have SteamVR and WMR for SteamVR set to Beta or not, still getting crashes when attempting to fly a second mission or respawning in multiplayer or pressing the F10 map, etc.  It just seems to be constant problems.  It is weird, because I did NOT have this issue when 2.7 came out, it happened about 2-3 weeks after that I can't play in VR.

After getting the May cumulative update for Windows 10 I had a quick check, and the beta of WMR for Steam VR still causing Steam VR to crash when launching DCS. Had to opt out of the beta again.

Me too.  Had no issues at all prior to the latest DCS Update. No second mission crashes, very few Steam VR issues.  Right after the latest update, everything stopped working properly.  I had continuous DCS crashes, which I have never had, going all the way back to 2007!  Major issues with Steam VR.  I was running the latest version of Nvidia Driver 466.27.  Up to Date Windows version.  I reverted my driver back to my previous driver 456.77 which helped with framerate fluctuations.  I am starting to Curse my decision to go with HP G2 because I hate dealing with Steam and all the issues with their software.  I miss the straight forward use of my Rift S but I can never use their products again until they stop forcing us to join their Cult.

Couple of weeks after 2.7 got installed, Steam VR started crashing on DCS startup. Was not able to play at all for the past few weeks. With the recent DCS and SteamVR updates the issue remained. Tried opting out of the WMR for Steam Beta as some users suggested and the crashes stopped... Go figure...

The only thing that helped me was turning off motion smoothing in WMR. After turning it off I had no further crashes.

As I have the same problems in DCS as in other Sims in VR, I don't really expect DCS to be the main issue.

Same here i guess I'm gonna need to take a break from dcs untill there's a fix. The longest i can run a mission is like 5-10 minutes before steam vr crashes, but mostly its within 2 minutes of running a mission. Opting out of wmr beta makes no difference.

I really wanted to fly the hind.

I tried again yesterday and was able to fly for at least an hour. I suspect malwarebytes was the culprit.

Switching aircraft or going into the F10 map in multiplayer are enough to cause this to happen to me with a Pimax 8kx.

I suspect it's a problem with the single threaded nature of DCS; it's busy focusing all the CPU on I/O to load assets into RAM and the draw calls stop, which gets interpreted as a crash by SteamVR.

My Rig:

- Ryzen 7 3700
- Gigabyte X570 / 32Gb PC3200
- RTX 3080 Stock clocks
- M2 Nvme drive
- Reverb G2

- Windows 11

I came from an Oculus Quest 2. After switching to the Reverb G2 with WMR/Steam VR, I couldn't get my smoothness on par. Always around 45-60fps with pretty high settings, but even on low settings I kept those annoying micro stutters in the cockpit. So I forced Motion Smoothing on (not only in Steam VR but also in WMR for SteamVR), disabled MSAA, tuned down some eyecandy and everything looks awesome and supersmooth. The loading screens still makes me want to lie down on the floor with foam dripping out the corner of my mouth, but hey, nothings perfect.

However, when I entered an MP server, I encountered SteamVR crashes. Immediately after the sever loads, when selecting a role, and clicking Go fly. Although DCS loads the module in the background, SteamVR crashes.

So this is my SteamVR log:

So anybody maybe got some more clues why this is happening? Because I'd still like to fly on MP servers.

Edit: though wrong that it only happend on Dynamic mission servers. Haven't been able to join any Multiplayer server.

Please help guys. I don't know what to do, my favorite game is broken.

Hey all,

Just thought I would chime in and say that I am having a similar issue with my vive pro 2 and dcs current open beta.
I've been able to consistently replicate the issue smashing F2 and and F10.
The crash seems to happen the fasted on Syria and multiplayer servers.
I've tried a full DCS reinstall, current drivers system reformat etc and nothing seems to work.

Starting to think its a memory leak watching system performance as the game is churning through aircraft etc.

Anyone had any further luck with the issue?

So anybody maybe got some more clues why this is happening? Because I'd still like to fly on MP servers.

Edit: though wrong that it only happend on Dynamic mission servers. Haven't been able to join any Multiplayer server.

Please help guys. I don't know what to do, my favorite game is broken

Did you ever find a solution for this? I have the exact same behavior - sometimes it takes 4-6 restarts and SteamVR crashes to get into a multiplayer session.... And even then it mostly crashes whenever I need a new plane or sometimes by simply just flying low.... HAPPENS ALL THE TIME....

Hoping Eagle Dynamics will skip SteamVR for next gen engine 😕

My SteamVR console will say stuff like:

Just saw this topic as I have been banging my head against the wall with my stuttering issues.  Go ahead and throw my name on the heap with same issues.  My setup:

5800x / 3080ti / 64GB RAM / Reverb G2

I have spent lots of money upgrading my system trying fix this issue (damn near brand new system now) and I have finally landed on what appears to be the culprit - VRAM.  All of the issues everyone speaks of here are identical - I wanted to add to it to try and maybe assist:

When my VRAM spikes and my frames go to crap:

-My GPU power goes from 350W to 200-230W.

-My GPU usage goes from 60% to 99%.

This happens in the Apache and on Syria, but last night, it happened on the LSO stand in caucuses.  After sitting there for 5 minutes, the graphics reset, the power increased, and the frames went back to 45+.

To replicate:

1. Load The second instant action mission for AH64 in Syria - Hot start on the ramp.

2. From there on, complete stuttering.

3. I am using OpenXR, my settings are mostly low, save cockpit textures being high.  Have tried it with shadows off, clouds low.

it seems as if the system is using the power for something else and DCS gets put on the back burner, goes to 15 frames.  I alt tab out, mess around for a few minutes, all of the sudden it wakes up and goes “oh, you need power?  Here you go”. Power comes back, so do the frames.

A little late to the game, happening to me as well.

Flying Grayflag DFA/Syria. About 3 hours in, switching between F10 and F1 I start seeing stutters are Memory usage approaches 41-42gb. Then eventually SteamVR failes.

Using an Intel I9-9900k, 64GB RAM, RTX3090 w Pimax 8Kx.
