Worth upgrading 2080 Super to a 2080ti or 3080?

Recommended Posts

Hey folks, has anyone moved from a 2080 Super to a 2080ti or a 3080?

My system specs:

Ryzen 9 3950X

RTX 2080 Super

64GB RAM

Samsung EVO 970 2TB SSD

I use a 38" 4k monitor with trackir but I'm thinking of getting the new Reverb G2 VR headset.

Even without VR using my current DCS settings below (which I am not willing to lower much further) I can't really use the Syria map over populated areas or airfields without deal-breaking fps losses.

Would I see a noticeable increase in performance with a 2080ti or a 3080? Especially wondering for 4k VR...

I'm not really a computer guy so sometimes watching these benchmarks and whatnot doesn't tell me much. Cheers!

IMO, don't waste your time going to a 2080Ti unless you get it for a screaming deal ( < $200-$300 ).

For VR, 3080 is where you want to be. 20GB versions will be released in December. I expect the artificially induced lack of stock thing for 30 series will be over by March/April so that'll probably be when you can walk into any store and buy something off the shelf. In the meantime keep an eye on the AMD offerings. AMD will be "shelfware" probably by January.

Good advice, thank you. Might be good to see what the verdict is among the VR community with the 3080 and the Reverb G2 once both start be a bit more common.

I didn't realise the memory size for the 3080 can vary! Or do you mean the 3080ti will be out in December?

I've got the 2080 Super and in the same boat. I'm waiting to either see what AMD do, or waiting for a 3080 'Super'. It seems DCS benefits greatly from more VRAM, and 10GB of the 3080 isn't enough of a jump from the 2080 Super at this stage.

I'm hoping a 3080 'Super' will be the sweet spot between price and performance, and expect it will trump the 3090 re "bang for buck". Until then I'm holding onto my cash (unless AMD pull something off amazing).

You may also want to consider upgrading the CPU to a Zen 3 part before moving the GPU, for this game. At least in VR, we still seem to be single thread performance limited, even with a 20 series.

FS2020, the closest as-like benchmark shows definite performance differences between the I9 and R9 parts.

I was planning on it. I'll probably hand this cpu down to my daughter and pop a 5900X in my current setup. I'll still wait to see more benchmarks once Zen3 drops.

I am told the architecture won't be much different to my 3950X. Need all that extra VRAM from 3080Ti. Apparently it is the Ti that's coming out in December. Just wonder how long before you can pick one up after the dust settles and you don't over-pay.

I think you have to wait a bit longer https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-allegedly-cancels-geforce-rtx-3080-20gb-and-rtx-3070-16gb

That's kinda unfortunate. Now will there ever be a 20Gb/Ti for the 3080, or can we now order the 3080 10GB without having to worrie about a high VRAM version coming out later. That's the question now. NVIDIA is realy playing bad IMO, but i'm not sure if i want to go the AMD route...

from what ive seen nvidia cnacelled the high vram versions late on and the aibs are NOT happy about it because they were pretty much ready to make them, nobody seems to know why they did it either. its not due to a gddr6x shortage thats for sure

Also GDDR6X shortage would only be an explanation for the 3080 20GB, but not for the 3070 16GB as it does use normal GDDR6. That's just great for me, got a Reverb G2 on pre-order and my old 1080Ti just bit the dust few days ago. Now running a backup 1060 6GB and can hardly maintain 60 FPS on a 1080P screen with medium settings. So totally under pressure to get a new (high-end) card and don't want to get a second hand one from ebay wich was propably used for mining. I would have taken the bitter pill to have the G2 laying around 'till december... But from my personal perspective, NVIDIA (obviously) cancelling the high VRAM versions is a catastrophy and tbh i have no idea what to do now:dunno:

see what navi does, 16gb garaunteed and its looking like better or at least as fast as 3080 for dcs type useage (ie dx11 rasterization and no ray tracing)

Will definately wait for big navi to see some benchmarks in comparison, but at least to see if NVIDIA is dropping prices or announcing other cards (3080ti?). Afaik NVIDIA never officially announced increased VRAM versions of the 3080 and the 3070 as well as those beeing canceled wasn't a official statement from NVIDIA. So one can only hope AMD comes up with something great, even if going for NVIDIA. Competition is good.

Because having more SKU's makes things complex on the supply side. Because more QA is required when you launch more versions. Because it'll eat into 3090 sales. Because they want to save something for Ti version. Because they want to maintain the banding between the various products w/o making it confusing for customers.

The above comes to mind.

Guru3d posted some "LEAKED" benchmarks, take it with a pinch of salt, show that the 6800XT will outperform a 3080 in rasterization by 22%.

I would definitely wait and see what it delivers once available. It looks promising for DCS and waiting a few weeks can't really hurt if there is a 22% boost in the air.

Not to forget the 16GB VRAM on AMD cards compared to 10GB Nvidia cards.

This is very promising. Not only for DCS i guess. If this turns out to be true, i'll definately come to the dark side.

I realy wonder if the GDDR6X of the 3080 makes any significant difference compared to the GDDR6. It's propably better, but how much?
