Patch 1.5.4 News

Last week we published the 1.5.4 patch in Open Beta. So far, your feedbac is more than helpful in squishing this pesky bugs! Right now, we still have some critical bugs which we need to fix before we patch DCS World to 1.5.4.

DCS World Weekend Update - 22 July 2016

DCS: F-5E Tiger II by Belsimtek Early Access Available!

The DCS: F-5E Tiger II by Belsimtek Early Access is now available for download. You can purchase it from our DCS E-Shop

If you pre-purchased, please use the DCS World Module Manager to download and install your purchase.

The F-5E was developed by Northrop Corporation in early 1970s. The light tactical fighter is an upgraded version based on previous F-5A developments. The F-5s' combat role encompasses air superiority, ground support, and ground attack. Given its mission flexibility, ease of operation, and low cost, the Tiger II has, and continues to server, air forces across the globe.

The F-5E is armed with two 20-mm M39-A3 cannons with 280 rounds per each cannon. The cannons are located in the nose section, forward of the cockpit. Special deflectors are used to avoid compressor stall conditions caused by hot gas ingestion as a bi-product of operating the M-39-A3. Each cannon is capable of firing at a rate of 1500 to 1700 rounds per minute.

Each wingtip incorporates a launcher rail capable of firing AIM-9 infrared-guided missiles.

Five hard points (one centerline pylon and four underwing pylons) allow the aircraft to carry different types of air-to-ground weapons (bombs, cluster munitions, and rockets) 6,400 pounds (about 3000 kg) in total. In addition, illumination ammunition and cargo containers can be attached. To increase flight duration and range, external fuel tanks can be attached to three hard points (a centerline pylon and two inboard pylons). Maneuverability and speed can be maximized in combat by jettisoning all external stores.

The Museum Relic Campaign Now Available

“The Museum Relic” campaign is a story driven campaign that takes place between the two small fictional countries of Matova and Obristen. As their war stretches into its fifth year, both nations are feeling the strain of not being able to replenish their lost aircraft. You will fly as a character who, at the beginning of the war, was just a civilian. But after seeing the dire situation his country is facing, he decides to enlist in the Matova Army Air Corp. With his enlistment papers, he also brings with him his personal aircraft which he had donated to the Museum years ago.

Konichiwa everyone,

We hear you and understand your wish for more news about the Hornet project. Virtually all the work is in code at this time, but I can say that work continues and the electrical, hydraulic, and gear systems are all almost complete. The next step will be to tie these systems into the cockpit. Other systems have been tied to the cockpit and the HUD symbology integration is on-going. Once that task is complete, we can begin work on the flight model prototype.

The cockpit is done though and includes functionality for JHMCS. What weapon systems will be included in the Early Access is TBD.

As mentioned earlier in the year, it’s our hope to release the Hornet into early access by the end of the year. However, that is only a best estimation at the time and many things can alter this. Only a date announced with the start of a pre-purchase should be taken as a date you can bank on. We are quite accurate with such dates.

When there is more information to pass along on this project, we will do so.

DCS World 2.5 Update

Perhaps our biggest focus is on the huge DCS World 2.5 Update that will unify DCS World 1.5 and 2.0. Not only will the DCS World 2.5 be one version to rule them all, it will also include a vastly improved Caucasus map. Features of the new map will include improved and higher resolution textures and elevation mesh, improved trees, higher density of ground objects, improved lighting and shadowing, terrain projected shadows, procedural grass, and other improvements. Best of all, this will be our free gift to you.

DCS World 2.5 is still on track to be available in 2016.

Preview Look at New and Improved Maps Coming to DCS World

Although we started DCS World with a focus on aircraft modules, we are now adding new maps to the mix. We feel that maps are just as important as the aircraft, and they need to display the same high level of quality and span different time periods to match our aircraft. We are currently working on three maps: Caucasus map for DCS World 2.5, DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range (NTTR) map for its final release state, and the Normandy 1944 map to support our DCS World War II series. As these projects wrap up, we will continue work on the Strait of Hormuz and other maps. We will also continue to improve our maps with new technologies that will further improve their features, looks, and performance.

We expect to release the updated Caucuses map for DCS World 2.5, the final version of the NTTR map, and the Normandy map this year.

Last week we had a look at improvements for the Caucasus map for DCS World 2.5. This week we would like to share some work-in-progress images of updates to the Nevada map and some new images of the Normandy map.

A key part of bringing the NTTR map out of early access is fleshing out the number of airfields, towns, and landmarks. As for the airfields, we are adding several new military and civilian locations to operate from:

A-10C: Operation Piercing Fury Campaign Now Available

Operation Piercing Fury (OPF) is a story driven campaign consisting of you leading a forwarded deployed A-10C Warthog “Hawg” Flight in the Georgian Area of Operations (AO). You will be assigned to and commanded by the Joint Special Operations Command providing direct support to conventional and non-conventional coalition forces in the region against Al-Doran and Special Purpose Islamic Army extremist groups. Your skills will be tested as you execute On-Call Close Air Support (CAS), Combat Search and Rescue, assist in Capture-or-Kill missions, and provide CAS for Air-Assault raids by Special Forces teams throughout the region. The campaign puts you directly into the action with many missions based off real-world scenarios, operations, and tactics. More DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range Map Update Images

This weekend we have a final set of images from the big update coming for the Nevada map. This final set of images give you a look at Beatty Airport, Mina Airstrip, Echo Bay Airstrip, and the Tonopah Test and Training Range (TTR) Airfield.

Work continues on this big update with emphasis on new airfield AI pathing, runway adjustments, completing the TTR airfield buildings, and some other items to resolve before release later this year.

Nevada Mood

The Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) has the largest contiguous air and ground space available for peacetime military operations in the free world. The NTTR land area includes simulated air defense systems, mock airbases, and several target ranges. The NTTR was also used for nuclear testing. Today, it is home to RED FLAG and other military exercises that include countries from around the world. The NTTR map for DCS World 2 includes Nellis AFB, Creech AFB and the infamous Groom Lake AFB (aka Area 51). This map also includes the city of Las Vegas, McCarran International Airport, and Hoover Dam.

DCS World Weekend Update - 30 September 2016

A-10C: Advanced Aircraft Training (AAT) Qualification Campaign

The A-10C Advanced Aircraft Training Qualification campaign puts you in the cockpit of an A-10C Warthog, and tests your ability to use the aircraft's weapon systems successfully. Based on real world qualification requirements, you will fly 10 performance check rides to execute against pre-defined performance objectives. If successful, you will rate a Qualified rating and proceed to the next performance objective.

The campaign covers a number of key areas including Air to Air Refueling Day and Night, Countermeasures and Threat Avoidance, Target Area Ingress Preparation, Illumination Flare Employment, Air to Air Gun and Missile Employment, Air to Ground Gun & Rocket Employment, Unguided and Guided Bomb Employment, and Missile Employment.

There are over 1,200 voiceovers and over 206 pages of briefing material including the A-10C Amplified Checklist, Maps, Target Diagrams, and Mission Data cards.

Additionally, 10 Practice Missions are included so you can perfect your Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) prior to taking the qualification check rides.

DCS: F-5E Tiger II Skin Contest

One of the great things we love about the Tiger II is the numerous and beautiful ways in which the aircraft has been painted over the years. Not just the various country operators, but the many creative ways in which it has been painted as an aggressor aircraft.

DCS: World War II Update

Our DCS: World War II set of products progress with the Spitfire making great progress and the Normandy map nearing completion. An important aspect of creating the Normandy map is also creating a set of period-appropriate units to populate the map. This includes both Allied and Axis units that span both military and civilian unit types.

New DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range Map Images

The last big feature is now added to the Nevada map update: the Tonopah Test and Training Range (TTR) Airfield. We consider this the cornerstone of the update. Not only does the TTR airfield act as a divert airfield for Red Flag exercises, it was also home to the Red Eagles (Soviet fighters flown by US aircrews) and the F-117 stealth strike aircraft.

This airfield also greatly extends flight distances between airfields; a common request from our online players.

Today we offer a pair images of the TTR airfield.

DCS: World War II, Normandy Map Update

We are also making great progress with the Normandy map, a chief part of which is creating the many period units to populate the map. Today we offer pair first-look images of famous German heavy tank Tiger what we have created for this new map.

DCS World War II Update

Work continues at great speed on new elements of DCS World War II. Much of the work is focused on DCS: Spitfire LF Mk IX and the Normandy map, and both are, or will be soon, going into internal test! This is always a good sign that we are approaching an Early Access release. In addition to the Spitfire and WW II era map, we also continue working on new AI units to inhabit the map. Last week we had a look at the Tiger tank, this week we offer first looks at the Panther and a work-in-progress image of the B-17.

DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Map Update

In previous newsletters, we shared images of the new airfields coming to the NTTR map. In addition to the airfields though, we will also be adding many new small and large urban centers like St. George, Laughlin, Tonopah, Goldfield, Caliente, and many others.

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Update

Although most of the art work is done for the Hornet (minus a few external stores), most of the current work involves the coding of the various systems and flight dynamics. In addition to that, we are also very busy with documentation and the refining design specification as we gather new information.

Once the project gets closer to Early Access, we can start talking more about this project.

DCS World 2.5 Update

In addition to the Hornet, NTTR, and DCS WWII tasks, another high-priority task for us is wrapping up DCS World 2.5. The primary function of 2.5 will be to combine both 1.5 and 2.0 into a single executable and thereby being able to access all maps from a single program. We are close with the last two big items being the resolution of how we will render forests and trees in 2.5 and updating some of the old objects to our current format.

Once those two items are addressed, we will start releasing some new images and videos of what is in store.

The Vickers Supermarine Spitfire is arguably the most iconic fighter aircraft of World War II. Famous for its role in the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire served as Britain’s primary fighter during the entirety of the war. The Spitfire combines graceful lines, eye-watering dogfight performance, and heavy firepower in its later variants. For DCS World, we are happy to bring you the most accurate and realistic simulation of the Spitfire LF Mk IX ever created. The aircraft has been tested extensively by current Spitfire pilot Nick Grey and is unmatched in fidelity and detail.

The Spitfire Mk IX was originally developed as a stopgap measure as a response to the appearance of the Focke-Wulf FW 190A.

The Spitfire IX is powered by the Merlin 66. This engine produces its best performance at slightly lower altitudes than the older Merlin 61. Spitfires equipped with this engine were designated LF Mk IX. This was the most numerous version of the Mk IX, with 4,010 produced. The majority of Mk IXs of all types used the standard “c” wing, which would often carry two 20mm cannon and four .303in machine guns.

The Mk IX was an improvement on the Mk V, especially at altitudes above 20’000 ft. It had a top speed of 409 mph at 28,000 feet, an increase of 40 miles per hour. Its service ceiling rose from 36,200 feet to 43,000 feet. It could climb at 4,000 feet per minute. In July 1942, an early Mk IX was flown against a captured Fw 190A, and the two aircraft were discovered to have similar capabilities. The RAF had its answer to the Fw 190 problem.

The Mk IX replaced the Mk V from June 1942. It allowed the RAF to go back onto the offensive in occupied Europe, and resume the “circus”, “ramrod” and “rodeo” raids. Its first combat success came on 30 July 1942, when a Spitfire Mk IX shot down a Fw 190. Amongst other notable achievements, the Mk IX took part in the highest altitude combat of the Second World War, when it intercepted a Ju 86R at 43,000 feet over Southampton on 12 September 1942. On 5 October 1944 Spitfire Mk IXs of 401 Squadron were the first allied aircraft to shoot down an Me 262 Jet. The Mk IX remained in service until the end of the war, even after the appearance of the Griffon powered Mk XIV. It is considered by many combat pilots as the greatest aircraft of the war and a personal favourite of Johnnie Johnson, Britain’s leading ace of WWII with 34 confirmed kills and 700 operational sorties, the vast majority on Spit IXs.

DCS World 1.5.5 Open Beta

Soon we will be releasing the 1.5.5 Open Beta update to DCS World. Once we feel that any “Showstopper” bugs have been resolved, we will release it as the public version. Some of key features of this update include:

Tactical Markers for F10 Map:

At the request of virtual pilots, we have implemented an option to add markers to F10 map while in a mission. Using a new button on the F10 map toolbar, any player can add his or her mark to the map with a brief description. Thus, you can mark a point or target or landmark on the map, and all the players from your coalition will immediately see it. For example: you could mark targets for the next sorties on the map that could then be assigned to coalition members. Thus, online gameplay becomes much more interactive and makes it possible to develop teamwork under the conditions of rapidly changing environment.

Su-27:

Incorrect indication of fuel quantity when start in air has been fixed
Flight control system with AOA and G-limiter has been adjusted
Autopilot has been adjusted
Tires strength has been adjusted

UH-1H:

A new option has been added that allows you to now choose different control modes of using TrackIR and mouse together to control the machine gun and door gunner with no need for manually adjustment mouse axis and TrackIR settings.

F-5E:

Tail spin has been modified (nature of the aircraft spin entry has been specified)
Inverted spin has been simulated
Critical engine operation modes at the spin entry have been simulated
Radar operation under the conditions of active jamming has been simulated
Presentation of the ground clutter on the radar display has been simulated
An option to adjust visibility of the target mark using the VIDEO switch under conditions of ground declutter has been added
RWR operation simulation has been improved (audible signals from various threats depending on the type of threat operation mode and missile launch signal have been added).
The radar beam motion (B-Sweep) has been better simulated on the radar display

DCS: F-5E Tiger II Out of Early Access

This past week Belsimtek resolved the remaining issues to bring the Tiger II out of Early Access status. These included:

Inverted spins have been simulated
UHF radio - Hinged access door will now open
AIM-9 tone will not be heard if both wingtips are gone
Landing gear audible warning will be heard when warning test switch is enabled
TACAN channel selector animation has been corrected
Fixed RWR sound issues with new contacts
Wing bend and twist due to G-loads has been corrected
Changing TACAN channel will not interrupt current radio chat
Input: Added some axis commands for TDC, rudder trim, lights etc.
With an F-5E air start, the aircraft will be trimmed to the assigned speed like it is implemented for all other aircraft
Aileron limiter now disabled at cold start
Single player missions added
Added inert and training stores
Added wing damage with high G overload
Drag chute cannot be fully deployed without an airstream
Drag chute model corrected
Fixed missing right wing light halo
Corrected training missions triggers (setting course).
Some corrections to Flight Manual
Added pilot to cockpit
Fixed fuel pressure lights simultaneously going off after single engine start
Fixed oxygen pressure gage showing 0 after turning off supply lever
Fixed chaff program execution when single flare is selected

DCS World 1.5.5 from Open Beta to Release Version

Last week we released the Open Beta version of DCS World 1.5.5. You can read the changelog here:

DCS World 2.5 Update

We have determined that the DCS World 2.5 update will not be available in 2016 as we had earlier hoped. This is mainly due to additional work needing to be done of the Caucasus map update, and we don’t feel it can be accomplished within the next two months at a high level of quality. Before we can complete this map update, we first need to finalize and release both the Nevada map update and the Normandy map. Those, along with the Spitfire, are now our highest priorities. Once the Nevada update and the Normandy map tasks are complete, our map team can return to the Caucuses map and move the 2.5 closer to an Open Beta release.

Also, please note that official information is only passed along through our Newsletter and press releases.

Hornet Update

As with the DCS World 2.5 update, it was also decided last week that the Hornet Early Access will be pushed beyond our original desire to release by the end of this year. As mentioned a couple of weeks ago, we are now very busy coding the various cockpit systems and flight dynamics. However, as this work continues and we acquire new information, the level of complexity has become more apparent and it will take more time than first estimated.

When we do have significant news on the project to share, we will certainly do so. Once the Early Access for this project goes into pre-purchase, we will announce its release date then.

Release of DCS World 2.0.4 with DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Map Extension Pack

Today we will be releasing the next update to DCS World 2.0, version 2.0.4. The primary addition to this update is the inclusion of the Extension Pack for the DCS: NEVADA Test and Training Range map. This extension includes 13 new airfields and several new cities and towns. One of the new airfields is Tonopah Test and Training Range airfield, that was home to the “Red Eagles” flying Russian-developed aircraft and the F-117A “Stealth Fighter” wing. This is a FREE extension pack to owners of the Nevada map. Enjoy!

Note that the Nevada map requires DCS World 2.0 at the time and is not compatible with DCS World 1.5.

DCS World Weekend Update - 25 November 2016

F-5E: Aggressors BFM Campaign by Maple Flag Released

The F-5E Aggressors BFM campaign puts you in the cockpit of an F-5E Tiger II, as a new Aggressor pilot with the 65th Aggressor Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base. Based on real world procedures, you will fly as Red Air against Blue Air Forces. Upon arrival, you will fly a familiarization flight around the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR). Then you will face a series of challenging Basic Fighter Maneuver (BFM) missions against similar and dis-similar aircraft. Your opponents include the F-4E, F-5E, F-14A, F-15C, F-16C, F/A-18C, M-2000C, MiG-29G, CF-188 and MiG-21.

Additionally, there are 10 single player practice missions with in-air starts so you can perfect your BFM tactics and techniques. There are over 1,000 voiceovers and over 45 pages of briefing material including the RED FLAG Spins, Red Forces In-Flight Guide, Maps, Diagrams, Custom Kneeboards and Mission Data cards.

Among the others fixes and additions in DCS: Mi-8MTV2, it is now possible to have AI door and rear gunners (door gunner with a “KORD” 12.7 mm machine gun and the rear gunner with a PKT machine gun 7.62 mm), and the ability to play as door gunner. Sling-load operations gameplay has been thoroughly upgraded and improved. The pilot’s guide manual was dramatically reworked: systems principles and operations described in depth, and all procedures from startup to weapon employment thoroughly illustrated. A new campaign from 3rd party developer will be available soon!

Other new changes include:

Reworked helicopter flight dynamic according to taken damage or systems failures (tail rotor fails dynamic, tail breakaway, tail rotor transmission fin damage)
Destructive overload was fine-tuned (gear break possibility, tail rotor breakaway), gear friction, damage system from projectiles hits tuned, crew cabin armor implemented
Cockpit sound was tuned and fixed according to real Mi-8 pilots feedback
New loads were added (8 so far, more to come with updates) with their dynamics tuned, sling damage upon contact with helicopter implemented, crew chief sling-load operation voice commands added
Special options for module were changed, including addition of joystick without springs and FFB option

The F-5E was developed by Northrop Corporation in early 1970s. The light tactical fighter is an upgraded version based on previous F-5A developments. The F-5s' combat role encompasses air superiority, ground support, and ground attack. Given its mission flexibility, ease of operation, and low cost, the Tiger II has, and continues to serve, air forces across the globe.

The F-5E is armed with two 20-mm M39-A3 cannons with 280 rounds per each cannon. The cannons are located in the nose section, forward of the cockpit. Special deflectors are used to avoid compressor stall conditions caused by hot gas ingestion as a bi-product of operating the M-39-A3. Each cannon is capable of firing at a rate of 1500 to 1700 rounds per minute.

Each wingtip incorporates a launcher rail capable of firing AIM-9 infrared-guided missiles.

Five hard points (one centerline pylon and four underwing pylons) allow the aircraft to carry different types of air-to-ground weapons (bombs, cluster munitions, and rockets) 6,400 pounds (about 3000 kg) in total. In addition, illumination ammunition and cargo containers can be attached. To increase flight duration and range, external fuel tanks can be attached to three hard points (a centerline pylon and two inboard pylons). Maneuverability and speed can be maximized in combat by jettisoning all external stores.
