I love blowing the crap out of things, so first a P-38, second an A-20G, third a Beaufighter, and either a Typhoon, or Tempest would be nice for ground pounding. Want in one hand, and you know what in the other is parr for the virtual course.

A Beaufighter would be very interesting

  • 2 weeks later...

UK:

  • Hawker Hurricane or Hawker Sea Hurricane (assuming we're going to see WW2 aircraft carrier operations in the future).
  • Hawker Typhoon.
  • Bristol Beaufighter.
  • Fairey Firefly (again, assuming we see WW2 carrier op's in future).

Germany:

  • Junkers Ju 87.
  • Henschel Hs 129.
  • Messerschmitt Bf 110.
  • Messerschmitt Me 410 Hornisse.

USA:

  • Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.
  • Bell P-39 Airacobra (could arguably be assigned to Soviets via lend-lease due to it being favoured more by Soviet pilots than American).
  • Lockheed P-38 Lightning.
  • North American B-25 Mitchell (I realise this is classified as a medium bomber, however, it's my understanding there were numerous variants some of which were more akin to ground attackers).

Russia/Soviets:

  • Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3.
  • Yakovlev Yak-9.
  • Lavochkin La-5.
  • Ilyushin Il-2.

Japan:

  • Mitsubishi A6M Zero.
  • Nakajima Ki-43.

I realise it's quite a large list and specific variants haven't been included. One thing I hope to see is liveries included with each aircraft for the major nations that used them which have been announced/introduced. One example would be a Fleet Air Arm livery for the F-4 Corsair when it is eventually introduced. The same would/could apply to aircraft such as the Hawker Hurricane with a Soviet Air Force livery.

I also realise that I've only included a couple of Japanese aircraft, admittedly the Pacific theatre isn't my strongest area of knowledge. I've also omitted the Italians for the sake of trying to avoid getting carried away, however, if we were to see an expansion of operations into the Mediterranean and North Africa then this would open up the opportunity for some additional interesting aircraft.

Hey guys, of course we can dream but I would recommend to stay with our feet on the ground. Did you notice that ED produce max 1 WWII module per year? And moreover this year no new modul was announced... Except F4U that is in development for at least 4 years and not by ED.

Definitely a fair point. To be honest the biggest factor for a solid suggestion would be which front they're focused on, which for the time being appears to be the Western Front. If I was to narrow it to a single suggestion it would be the Bf 110 as it is capable of air to air and ground strikes, much like the Mosquito. I'd also argue for some more Axis aircraft in the short term to try and reach a more level footing in terms of options.

My primary ask would be that we get the above suggestions initially as AI, such that we can then build out more representative battles using the existing aircraft.

If some of those become flyable in the future, all the better

Yeah, personally I see more AI types available as a great benefit to gameplay.

I've always seen DCS WW2 as a lost cause, as well as Combined Arms addon. As a museum simulation it does rather well, better than MSFS (since you can shoot stuff up), but it won't work in diving into immersive WW2 action. For museum simulation part you can take literally any aircraft and shoot/bomb/overfly something with it, but when coming to immersion, even old CFS3 will do that better for you. You literally need everything, from the whole host of aircraft -- scouts, bombers, fighters and everything in between -- to the whole host of ground and naval forces. What's more important, you'll need the game to organize all of that into their respective squadrons, airfields, divisions, batallions, etc and make it all move at once in (at least somewhat) believable order. And if in DCS modern warfare you can organize a tank brigade and move it out of big SAM cover to make a tactical engagement -- or even use the generator for that! -- it doesn't work like that for WW2 stuff. Considering slow development of the game itself, most of these features are unlikely to emerge any time before the development team is disbanded -- so we're down to museum simulation. Which means that the aircraft can literally be "any". BF-109E? Sure, why not! BF-109F? Excellent? Yak-1? Very well! Hurricane? Good, too! I'm not into US early aircraft but I woudn't oppose those, as well. It's a museum, after all.

You should check out the Storm of War server.

They do amazingly with the limited assets currently available in DCS, and completely contradict your "lost cause" outlook.

SOW is just as boring as all other servers if not more. They just require you to do a proper mission planning with the squad to off-set the lack of assets, and a lot of people love the planning more than the actual game. It's still just as poor with assets and possible scenarios, same missions over and over. SOW is not a poster child for this topic.

Apart from the offtopic, so far the actual request is split between people that have hope for a European theatre with historically matched opponents using the current DLC, and people that want the Pacific theatre without any DLC if you discount land based P-51 and P-47 and the out of time Marianas terrain.

Let's wind forward in time.

Option A) European theatre gets the most common appropriate fighter and we can stop all the Kurfurst not used over the channel threads, have a few actually historical matchups, finally
Option B) You have the mainstream Axis naval fighter as a museum piece, with no carrier, in a 2000's Guam setting with no current opponents until F-4U (due soon) and Essex carrier.
Option C) Not listed, individual choice that may not fit with anything.

I'm curious from those that voted the Zero:
- Do you see your wish as fitting with what we have already or is there no perspective on DLC and other planes? (wanted not needed)
- Are you assuming that the correct DLC will be in place at the time for the wish to be viable? (wanted not needed)

Not a criticism of subjectivity, it's just that the thread said "wanted/needed" and i think the interpretation of the wording renders the entire thread pointless, since "wanted" doesn't have to assume anything, but "needed" suggests it has to fit in.

Exactly. ED has already announced that they will do a WW2 version of the Marianas map. The F4U is almost finished now and M3L has shown screenshots of Japaneses ground assets they are working on. Thus all elements for a minimum viable Pacific scenario would be there if somebody makes a Zero. You have to start somewhere.

I fully expect that F6F or Zero or both will be announced this year. Otherwise too many things like the Pacific Theater sub forum here or the Fw190A repainted as a Zero in the 2022 and beyond video wouldn't make any sense.

Yes. This is why I voted the Zero.

I don’t share the pessimism being voiced ^^

The Mosquito has been a game changer - whether you’re bothered about that aircraft or not… flying a twin has brought a new dimension to DCS WW2.  Hopefully opens the door to a P-38, Bf-110, Ju-88, Beaufighter, B-25 etc

The Corsair / Zero / Hellcat will bring another dimension with carrier Ops. It doesn’t matter which theatre, it’s the infrastructure that changes the game - ie WW2 era non-cat carriers and tail hook equipped warbirds

I’ve supported ED since the Flanker days and enjoyed their products immensely but from experience I really wouldn’t base any assumptions on the teams previous actions … That was then and now is now 😉

Can't agree with you here, sorry.

More WW2 assets would be great, for sure. But you can do as much or as little planning as you want and there's still plenty of fun to be had whether focusing on air-to-air, bomber interception or escort, airfield raids, or ground attack at the numerous objectives. In the last few months they've added trains that can be strafed and AI C47 and Mossie flights you can find and destroy if you're looking for them.

They do quite well with creating an immersive and fun environment with lots of communication with the SRS integration including lots of human GCI participation. I think they've been regularly setting new records for their highest player participation each month. Many squads are active on the server as well.

Back on topic - I feel like a P-38 could've avoided that sad event.  It could also, possibly, have fed starving children... Not mine, admittedly, as they'd be unfed due to me being broke after buying the module.

/S (duh), because I've seen the discord and OH MAN do I not wanna rub any of those folk the wrong way.

It's dead. It happened just recently, but developer final notes one could find on Reddit nothing but confirmed my message.

They’d just had their busiest month ever so the reasons for the servers close down are more nuanced than you suggest.

A quick scroll through the last couple of pages of the SoW thread on here might provide a clue.

I can't imagine it's much fun pouring hours of your life into a server only to be harangued by entitled idiots online for your trouble. Obviously there was some issues with DCS that were irritating the creators, but I'm sure there would have been more interest in continuing if the ubiquitous internet toxicity was not so prevalent.
