Hi all,

I am being asked a lot about my VR settings and how I am getting 90 FPS in VR

These are my current settings, in busy multiplayer session it will go down to 45 FPS but is very smooth for me.

I am very pleased with the reverb G2 and feels like a big upgrade from my vive cosmos, and the Dell Visor I started VR with.

Your settings maybe different and you may like better quality over frame rate, I like higher frame rates and this is what works for me, I hope it helps some of you.

Windows 10 Pro x64, NVIDIA MSI RTX 2080Ti VENTUS GP, Intel® i9-10900K 3.70GHz, 5.30GHz Turbo,

Corsair Hydro Series H150i Pro, 32GB DDR @3000,

ASUS ROG Strix Z490-F Gaming, HP Reverb G2

Note on the steam resolution I am now using 54% which seems to be the sweet spot for me and my preferences.

Hi BN, thanks, what do you have the steam vr home resolution set at please? (your picture is of the app specific setting...)have virtually the same set up and am struggling with high twenties frame times and around 30 FPS.......

For me in steam VR, video, on the home setting, 50 % is 2240 x 2192. I have 100% on the per app tab which is the same res as on the home tab.

What about the steam VR general tab, what do you have that set at please?

Thank you......I have copied your settings exactly and not getting quite the experience you seem to be?

Free flight in Syria instant action, very nice and smooth, but 45 FPS and GPU frame time approx 20ms. CPU is 15 or so....

My cockpit looks pretty good, but houses on the ground are doubled at the edges and the Hornet I start alongside is quite sparkly.....

Have to say it’s not yet what I was expecting (had a CV1 before)

I would say that I am surprised how you are getting 90 FPS as our rigs are almost identical, I must be missing something....currently I have no headroom for tuning in some better visual sharpness......

Syria earlier today, single player testing in open beta, 91fps. 🙂

VR is a minefield for settings and configs, I have seen the same hardware machines have much different results, and it is often difficult to pin down.

The steamvr resolution above your native is not an issue/bug. At 100%, that is the resolution the needs in order to render it in your headset’s native resolution. That is why there is no option to choose an exact 2160 when you turn down the % setting because it is working on a different set of computations.

Confused, an OpenGL setting had an impact on a DX based engine?

That's incorrect.  If you do the math, you'll find that 100% in SteamVR is actually 140% of native resolution (in number of pixels).  That is the supersampling Steam deems "appropriate".  That is why you can't reverse it exactly to your native resolution.  You can't reverse 140% reset to 100% back to original 100% without going into decimal value.

There is no different set of computations.  Resolution specified is exactly what is being rendered by your GPU and displayed on your headset.

It is not a bug but Steam deciding to relabel their own supersampling as 100% is misleading and confusing a lot of people.  Plus this varies depending on system and headset.

It is very confusing for sure, and it shouldn't need to be, steam could do better here.

The important thing to know with this setting in steam is it can have a huge impact on frame rates if set to high.

For me at the moment 54% seems to be the sweet spot for keeping the high frame rates I am looking for, and in the G2 and my eyes it still looks great.

Interesting, I tried your settings Bignewy and mine ran way worse, averaging around 25fps and really stuttery, I stuck it back to where I had it and its smooth and running high 30's - 45fps. A lot of things are radically different too and higher settings for water and AF. Running a G2 on a 2080 Super, 32G RAM, i7 8700 on a M2 SSD. I'm happy where it is at though and at least the G2 is not crashing like the G1 did. So many different things work for so many different systems...

Either you did not understand me or the video.  The video is saying exactly what I said and then failed to address the question.  Reverb G2 or any other VR headset are supersampled by default.  In order to compensate for the barrel distortion from the lens.  And 140% is known to be the ideal supersampling rate which is whole another subject I wont get into.

But the question is NOT why are they supersampling it.  The Question is why is 140% being labeled as 100% which is where the confusion comes from.

In most software, recommended value is set as "Default" but they don't change the scale of the value.  SteamVR just need to get rid of the % values and just use resolution values like your monitor resolution.

The post I responded to as incorrect said:

Quote

Which is incorrect.  Supersampled 140% is NOT the resolution it needs to be rendered at "native" resolution.  Supersampled resolution is just that.  Supersampled.

I encountered the same problem. Make sure to do a full restart of the whole mess after you change the settings. I found that after restart it had acceptable FPS nothing like stated but my system a bit different. In my case it made a small improvement maybe.

So just to clarify, as it’s somewhat confusing.......what is the correct setting in steam VR and the correct one for the app? Is it 48 or 50 % for the first and then 100% in the app, which is effectively the same as in the first setting as at 100% it’s multiplying by 1 and then if want to increase the clarity, you increase the percentage from 100 to say 120%in the app specific drop down, to increase by 20%? Have I got that right?

in the video  linked above, he is talking about the steam VR setting, yes? By this I mean the one that appears in general tab and also in video. There is then a separate slider for the specific app which is the multiplier setting, correct?

if he is correct, then it’s correct to set this first setting at 100% ? This gives me very poor performance- And I have a beast rig, this can’t be right......

I tried removing the winwing lines in my export .lua, noticed a small improvement, but not much. Using 50% and 120%, I am getting around 45 FPS and frame times around 18 GPU and 13 CPU.....which is ok, but way lower than others with similar kit and my visuals are not great in terms of clarity.........

what about settings in WMR?

What does it matter really? if you set it lower, get amazing frame rates and still get great clarity from the headset isnt the lower setting the best option?

Seems crazy to me to crank it to 100% or over, then expect good frame rates.

you can also add the non steam version of the game to steam  and then add that to the VR library so it always does show up, both in the Steam VR graphics settings and the Steam VR menu
