Possible AMRAAM/SD-10 Guidance Bug For Loss of TWS Track

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, though I am nearly 100% sure that it is, but if a TWS track is lost after an AMRAAM or SD-10 is fired , the missile will continue to fly in a straight line up into the air. Would the missile not try to pitch over and try to intercept the target at its last known location? The AMRAAM and SD-10 do happen to pitch over eventually but only at the last second where it bleeds off a tremendous amount of energy. I would imagine this behavior is because the missile's radar is able to pick up the target at this close range. Below are three tracks, one firing the AMRAAM using the hornet, the other with the viper, and one with the Jf-17 firing an SD-10, all show the same behavior.

Hey there and welcome to the forums. You are correct, the missiles should fly towards the last calculated interception point. Right now, in DCS, they seem to revert to 1G flight, until guidance is resumed (if it is resumed). SARH missiles also have this problem.

Two issues here that are subjected to DCS limitations.

1. ARH missiles in DCS have never had autonomous guidance to last known point other than times with magic INS.

2. ARH missiles in DCS have no time for scan rate so when in acquisition range they instantly acquire a target no matter its location in the scan cone, basically a full instant sweep and lock of its entire gimbals equalling instant lock.

The issue being if the missile had guidance to last known position then to adopt these tactics of launching from 40nm and immediately turning radar off would be over modelled because if the target makes evasive manoeuvres the missile will still find the target because of the ARH instant scan/lock, where in reality it would have to scan the airspace to find the manoeuvred target.

Did any of these "fixes" solve anything?

AIM-120 AMRAAM active radar seeker bug fixing/improvements:

  • Fixed HOJ logic, missile will switch between HOJ and active modes if target is lost.
  • LOS rate limit computations. Restriction on the angular rate of the line of sight has been restored.
  • Fixed visual launch mode behaviour. The missile in this mode no longer receives target designation from the aircraft, but itself searches for a target after launch. The search for the target is provided inside the 15 degrees cone (the width of seeker FOV) right in front of the missile.
  • Fixes in seeker target searching logics.
  • Introduced last target LOS storing. When the target is lost, the seeker retains its orientation, directed to where the target was.
  • Datalink. A fighter-missile line-of-sight check has been introduced.
  • Fixed periodical desynchronization of chaff lock in MP.
