ASPJ ECM jammer

JRM

Recommended Posts

From my military experiences (early '70s) the most protected stuff was underwater acoustics (sonar-buoys and subs) and electronics (radio comms and radar). I'm sure a civilian version of a military combat simulator will not have any of that correctly (accurately) simulated. We're going to get an estimation (which may or may not be how it really is.)
And it is normal it's like this, cause electronic attacks systems can turn an expensive fighter useless making it effectively blind.

This Hornet ASPJ seems like it goes a bit beyond how current jammers in DCS work. It seems to acutally break the lock of the SA-6 instead of just reducing its lock on range and the fact that it renders your radar unusable when the jammer is active is also quite interesting.

I was wondering about this as well. Is this a new functionality where a deception jammer can break a lock? Or was the video simply deliberately set up with threat beyond the good old noise-jamming burn-through range? In this case we would simply see a loop of lock->noise jammer->lock lost->no noise jammer->lock->noise jammer etc., which would mean that jammers remain pointless as burn-through range is almost always bigger than engagement range (perhaps there are some minor exceptions).

Will all ECM break locks now? F15? A10? Su27, etc?

Hi,

this correct as is based on actual reference documents for the Hornet ASPJ

thanks

It is correct that the jammer blanks the radar, so, in real life, one activates the jammer and another fires (shooter-cover).  The shooter is protected by the ECM of his partner ... Bignewy, did you take that into account in the simulator? ECM protects more than one flight? Thanks .

I don't think so, if one hornet is jamming a radar I'm guessing other hornets will have to do the same in order for them to be safe.

In real life the AN/ALQ-162 automatically scans for threat signals, identifies threat, and generates countermeasures, providing automatic radar jamming that invalidate the launch and tracking of enemy radars, therefore "blinds" the SAM to any target it wants to acquire, not only the plane that carries the pod. This is that I don't know if ED has modeled it correctly.

I know, I meant that I don't think DCS models that.

😞Well, if it is not modeled, then ED it could have been avoided to incorporate a realistic ECM that blocks the radar and that is why in the real life the pilots do not go alone but in groups supporting each other ... But I am hopeful that ED have done so. Let's see what Bignewy says ...

We are simulating the 165, not the 162, and based on the actual reference manuals. It is correct as-is. Thanks!

I believe his question pointed more towards how you modeled ECM rather than how a specific version of a system was designed.

He is asking if you plan or already have simulated the fact that IRL any noise created in an electromagnetic environment will virtually affect all said environment (in a given frequency of course!) and not a particular thing inside it. Again, this is totally outside of the 162 or 165, or any other in particular.

Thanks.

Assuming this behaviour is correct then what role does the radar/jammer priority button play on the radar page? Is the button just something that's non-functional IRL? Or does ED perhaps in the future intend to add some kind of function to this button that may or may not affect how the jammer and radar interact?

What button? Can't check right now, and I'm curious 🙂

I don't know what that is. Are you sure it's for ECM?

Yes, I'm sure

May I ask how can you be sure about its meaning and not about its role? Just curious here.

Dear all,

While we understand your curiosity in this interesting subject matter, we hope that you will also recognize that it is a sensitive one. As stated, our included the ALQ-165 based on our available and non-controlled references sources. It matches the source material correctly.

Given the sensitivity of the subject and forum rule 1.16, this will not be a subject of discussion on our forums. Once its released, we can discussed based on our sim manual, but we don't want to tread anywhere beyond.

We hope you understand.
Thanks, the ED Team
