Which graphics options do virtually nothing?

Hi,

 

I just got a 3090 and now my 5 year old i7 6700k PC can run DCS with literally every setting on max at 3500x1440 or whatever that res is. Almost!

 

The frame rate is very good but does occasionally dip down slightly below what I would like.

 

I was just wondering which settings I can turn down that I won't notice? Just need a few extra fps.

 

BTW DCS plus 3090 =OMG! Most impressive thing I've ever seen in my life!

Might depend on a specific system/ bottleneck so I don't think you can get a standard answer but generally shadows on low vs high, SSAA off. For Syria map terrain textures on low (you won't notice really).

How did you get your hands on a 3090?

Don’t use SSAA. It’s a huge performance hit and the benefit is fairly weak. A 3090 should be able to max just about everything though. Any low FPS situations are being limited by your CPU not the 3090

CPU is bottlenecking with much weaker cards as it is. I'm not sure there's any set up for any price that can run DCS on full settings without having crappy fps over certain places... Incerlik cough cough*

Scenery aside, I believe all the moving units on the map are eating up your CPU so there's no GPU that will fix that if you have a fair amount of units etc.

There is a supersamling option in the Nvidia control panel that works well with less of a hit. I would use that instead if you like SS.

It's called DSR, or Dynamic Super Resolution. It looks really good, gives great framerates compared to other AA methods, uses an enormous amount of VRAM, and causes crashing.

 

I find the built-in MSAA has gotten better in DCS, I can run 4x MSAA on my old 1080 Ti and FPS hardly drops down to the low 40s.

Hi AD,

 

Would you mind to share the settings are you running? It's at 1080p res or 1440p?

 

I have an i7-8700k, 32gb ram, RTX 3070. Running at 1440p. All settings maxed out except cockpit displays res (1024 but no every frame), depth of field disabled, heat blur on low, MSAAx2 instead of SSAA,  and the performance in Syria it's absolutely terrible, like 20fps (or less with a medium sized mission) on ground, and like 50 in the air.

 

Any idea or tip to improve?

- SSLR: huge frame rate hit with it enabled, yet I'm still to notice a gfx difference.

I couldn't disagree more: the difference is massive. Also, texture resolution (in any game) has zero impact on framerate as long as you have the required VRAM buffer. And with a 3090, that's not really an issue

This is what I use (in VR), and I get a rock solid 45fps no matter where I fly. I have DCS PD at 0.5 and Steam SS at 202%:

Isn't that option responsible for the wet looking runway on the supercarrier when it's raining?

No idea. But even if it is, it's still not worth it since it pommels the framerate even in missions without carrier where it's not raining.
