Game Crash on new PC

-Quetzalcoatl-

Hello, I've built a PC for friend so we can fly together. Unfortunately, the game keeps crashing. I think I've collected all the appropriate logs. Any help/guidance would be very much appreciated.

Sometimes the game "soft crashes" and we're able to upload the logs. At other times the PC hard locks and all we can do is power cycle.

Thanks in advance,

Q

Here's the crashlog. It looks like a GPU issue: see error messages about shader. But sometimes these messages are just a symptom of a different issue.

DCS detects a 32GB pagefile, which is good, and there's a lot of free space in both his drives (at least 300GB for each). His W10 is up-to-date. The GPU driver for his 1080Ti is very recent.

Lokk into the Windows Event Viewer at the time of the crashes (once in there, look into Windows > Application, Windows > System, and Windows > Security) and see if you can find any interesting message.

EDIT: I see some interesting app crashes at then end of the dxdiag log.

Try disabling the XBox Game bar.

Also, try uninstalling the driver  (thanks to DDU) and try a different version. Mine is from last october and it works great with my 1080 Ti.

Thanks Flappie.

I used the DDU to strip the current drivers and gave the set you referenced a shot, still crashing sadly. I also run the DCS repair utility, and renamed the C:\Users\yournamehere\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta to .old, and let it recreate that folder, still crashes. The crashes occur at random intervals, and are still sometimes hard crashes (system lock) and other times soft crashes which allow logs to be automagically uploaded.

I did peruse the Windows Event viewer, and have added a few concurrent events that may be instructive.

I also disabled the XBox Game Bar, which Microsoft has moved to Settings, XBox Game Bar, and are no longer able to be uninstalled without using PowerShell (grrr). Good walk through here: https://gist.github.com/joshschmelzle/04c57d957c5bb92e85ae9180021b26dc

I realized just now I am missing a fresh DXDiag

I had a similar issue that turned out to be a faulty GPU:

Not sure how you verify without swapping the GPU out, but I was chasing software issues for months for no gain.

@-Quetzalcoatl-Is the PC overclocked? (GPU, RAM...) If so, try to remove OC.

Since it's a brand new PC, have you ensured all cables are well plugged? (all GPU power cables, all CPU power cables...)

Also, when do crashes happen? At startup? When loading a mission? During flight? When switching views?

No overclocks, and we re-seated everything to ensure good connections. The crashes occur at random time-points, no pattern that I've been able to identify.

That was our next test, but it's a PITA as he is in TX and I'm in CA. I'm sending him a 2060 to try. We bought the 1080ti used, so likely the previous owner cooked it =/ Another grrrr created by the scalpers soaking up every GPU on the market.

New card, still crashing =/

We sent our friend a 2060 Super which we swapped in for the 1080ti. We then updated to the latest NVidia drivers and got the following crashes.

This time, there's a "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED" error message. It's frequent in DCS. We've helped a lot of people getting rid of this one. Below are solutions that worked.

Solutions that worked:

Empty "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp|\DCS.Openbeta" folder.

Disable ingame SSLR.

Remove dust from CPU coooler.

Remove GPU overclocking.

Remove RAM overclocking.

Change PSU.

Customize TDR values (as a last resort measure, I think it's worth a try in your friend's case).

Update: we've flashed the bios on the MSI Bazooka B450m Max Wifi and so far we're stable. It had been Version 7C87v10 (release) and we bumped to the latest non beta, 7C87v14.

I'll update with any further developments in case it is ever helpful to another player.

For the record, you guys are the most responsive game support I've ever encountered, thank you.

I have a 'slim' Win10 SSD just for gaming. "Slim" meaning: only Windows 10 (latest 20H2 stable version) and drivers + VC++ runtimes etc.

This 'gaming PC' runs literally over a thousand games (connected via different hard drives/partitions).

DCS World OpenBeta has it's own SSD drive. Installed all modules the other day (owned Payware and not-owned promotional access modules). Verified cache. Repaired install. Everything clean and tidy. I played endless hours without issues on this hardware the last year or two (though on the 'stable' branch).

The bigger was my surprise why certain modules suddenly don't want to even load. And, I too, get those 'soft' (= silent) CTDs.

Is this something rather common on the openbeta branch?

My hardware runs the latest RayTracing, VR and other AAA video game titles smoothly and without any problems! Of course, the latest drivers are installed and nothing on my hardware or in my vanilla Windows settings is remotely 'weird' or responsible for these, unique crashes.

Very curious to learn, if this is more than 'just a small sample of players'. My hardware is the most common and the hw drivers are mature and make games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Control or Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Death Stranded, etc, etc ... run smooth like butter.

But I am NOT curious enough to spend hours hunting down crash logs and helping debug problems. That is not why I own DCS modules. I only switched to the open beta since the latest modules are not available in the 'stable' build (whatever THAT means these days) for more than a year or so.

Final point: why 'silent crashes'? Is it too hard to pop a error message box when crashing? That's just not helpful at all, having to hunt and figure out 'what' caused the crash (hardware? OS? GPU driver? ... when it's the game).

Bad practice.

The open beta has nothing special. When a version is pushed from OB to stable, it doesn't change at all. This means your issue could also happen on the release branch.

When the crash is "controlled", DCS pops two boxes, one to ask for the creation of a dxdiag log, and another one that could, indeed, display the crashlog (but it doesn't). Some important messages like "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED" or "E_OUTOFMEMORY" should be diplsayed in that box, I agree. You should create a new thread about it in the Wishlist section.

Thank you, for the info.

I assume - in my case - this has nothing to do with the game build nor my hardware, but is rather a server-side authentification DRM/DLL hickup, not loading certain modules (which are 'free' right now, but I did not buy - hence do not own).

Most modules still run flawlessly and performant as before. So far, F-16, F-14 and the Carrier module all don't work for me. Everything else is fine.

Hi @-Quetzalcoatl-. Did your buddy eventually get rid of this bug or not? We have a new identical case here. I'm looking for solutions.
