Great F5 campaign

Recommended Posts

I agree, this is a nice campaign and I really enjoy it! I did not think that I would ever touch the F5e again and  I almost had forgot my f5e which I bought a long time ago and  when other  modules came I used them instead. I since then have thought about the f5e to be booring and hoplessly aoutdated when it comes to sensors etc. And although that is true Im amazed how good this aircraft realy is. It has not much electronic gadgets but what it has is very good if you learn exactly  how to use it and also get to know tactis as Ive had in another thread here.

Also this campaign does not feel as scripted as some other campaigs when it comes to the battle it self.

@johodg Thanks a lot for this. That's what I love about the F-5, Mig-21, F-14, it doesn't feel like you are flying a computer. You need to take split decisions very quickly. There's no greater feeling than doing a bomb pass and your bombs hitting the target as intended, no impact point, no release point, just our human brains calculating and using experience to do that. I tried very hard not to make it feel scripted, although there are moments where you have to be close to certain points to be able to go through the mission properly.

As always, if you have any questions or need any help let me know.

Cheers,

Thank you for the campaign, SorelRo.  I love the F5 and it's great to have missions other than my own self made scenarios to enjoy.  Very nice work and I feel I got great value for the small price of the campaign!

I am also enjoying this campaign a lot. Thanks @SorelRo, there isn't much quality DLC for the F-5E and this is a shame: it is a simple, yet rewarding aircraft to fly. I am having a really good time in this plane thanks to you, the missions have great variety and require different skills. I can recommend this campaign to anyone who owns this great little plane.

If I may offer some suggestion for future improvement in your next campaign: I feel like Krymsk is a bit empty and generally, the first few missions (I have done up to M07 so far) give me the feeling that I am mostly fighting alone (with my stupid AI wingman, lol). Outside of the second ship escort mission, there hasn't been a lot of AI flights to accompany me and make me feel like I am part of a war, even regional. The airport itself is always empty when I taxi back to the parking after landing. For example in the last mission I flew, attacking the SA-3, it is written in the brief that F-4s will attack the SA-6 after me. It would have been cool, on the way home, to see them pass in the sky above me, and to hear them engage the SA-6 on the radio - just a couple of lines, but I would have known that they were there and that it was a coordinated attack. I know it would have a small impact on performance but I think modern PCs can handle it, and some ground traffic / other AI flights would bring a lot of immersion.

I want to thank you for the custom kneeboard cards, they are very helpful to navigate. Do you know if there is any way to put them in a different order though? When I go "next page", I have to go through all airport charts - not practical. If I go "previous page", I have to go through all the auto-generated cards of the waypoints before, finally, I reach your kneeboard cards. I am just curious if it would be possible to have yours, as I use them for every flight (the ones showing a detailed map with direction and distance to next waypoint).

Thanks a lot for the great feedback and thanks a lot for enjoying it so far.

Couple if things:

-the initial idea was to have way more airport activity, however, since this campaign simulates a full war, there are a ton of units in one the ground that are moving, battling while you are flying. It may not be the most efficient way of doing this, but, maybe this will give me more data when the dynamic campaign engine will make it's way in the DCS world. So, with airport activity I noticed quite a lot of performance hit on the medium systems so I chose to sacrifice the units on the airport rather than sacrifice the battle itself.  If I would use a bit of ME magic and make units pop out of no-where that sometimes give a performance hit as well, so I have tried to avoid that.

-80% of the time spent in building a mission, if you take voices and briefings away, is convincing the AI to do what you want them to do. 5% of the time is spent with me banging my head against the wall, there are a few dents, in the wall and probably on my head as well. The funny thing is that AI behavior changes a lot with updates, there are not all of them bad changes, but after every update, all campaign devs we go through a minor panic attack and do our tests and see what has been broken or not, and what's not working, it can be taxing., and testing 25 missions takes a bit. To give you an example: AI sees targets differently depending the light conditions. That's brilliant from an AI point of view, but if you have a mission at dusk or dawn and you are there too early or too late you are in a world of hurt.

On that mission you mentioned the F-4's are attacking the SAM, you may check that on the mission results, and or, hear it on the radio.

-I'll look into kneeboards and how to present it quicker to you guys. I'm glad you enjoy that.

The campaign i'm working on now, the one for the AV-8B is slightly different from the F-5 one. It has more of that integration with the rest of the people around, while trying not to do a lot of radio gymnastics. I don't want to give a lot away but a lot of the feedback received will be incorporated.

As for F-5, I love that little plane, but it's hard to incorporate it in a conflict that's at least somehow credible. Same goes for the F-86 and Mig-15, another set of planes that I would like to put side by side on the Channel map. Sort of a Dunkirk in the 50's. But, with no B-29's and Tu-4's, with no IL-2's or IL-10's with no other aircraft that can make it credible, it's a project that for now I put on the back burner, or maybe make it with some mods included.

Once again, thanks a lot for the kind words and thanks for playing it.

Thanks for your explanations and the time you took to answer me. I have no idea how complex it can be to create something like this in the ME - to be honest I have 1-2 hours every evening to play, so I fly instead of creating missions. I have tremendous respect for those who do what you do and I am happy to support that and buy compaign DLC. I can only imagine how complex it is to make the AI do what you want it to. 🙂

I agree with you, more assets and modules are needed to flesh out the 60's and 70's to make more credible scenarios. This is a good period for aviation, fast jets are already there but the systems are still quite easy/rudimentary: it doesn't take hours to learn MFD pages and TPOD operation when there is none of those. 😜

A suggestion for the next campaign, Syria 1960/70, USA or Blue coalition Vs Syria/Red coalition. With the map, the wonderful skin that we have for the MiG-21/F-5, the good MiG-19, F-4 Phantom....there's plenty to have great tank battle on ground with CAS coming and great duel on air!

I finished the campaign this week. Just came here today to say how much I enjoyed flying it. I'll look forward to your next one. Looks like I'll need to learn the MiG-21!
