6900XT vs 6800XT for VR

Recommended Posts

Yes , that's why i require 4xmsaa and pd 1.4 . I quoted those numbers to infer just how powerful the 6800xt is .

Just an additional observation a bit away from the original topic. I have the 2070S paired with 5800X and Reverb G2. Last weekend I got my hands on 3090 for couple of days and of course decided to test in DCS.

I'm running 80% SteamVR general + 80% DCS specific SS settings. This just works for me. In DCS I also have specific settings, with shadows on low, 2X MSAA and no terrain shadows. It gives me my perfectly playable ~45 FPS with occasional discomfort near the ground. I could live with that.

So, having installed the 3090 I immediately went to my test mission to see 90 FPS 😄 Right, still slightly above 45 frames. That was expected, the mission is CPU bound, because DCS generally is. No sense in benchmarking in empty mission because you'll never fly those anyway.

Next step: bump Steam VR general and DCS supersampling to 100%. Good news, the FPS did not drop. The image clarity notably improved.

Next step: bump DCS in-game settings to nearly all max, all shadows on, MSAA 4x. Guess what? Still ~45-ish FPS with awesome picture like you get in those youtube videos.

So while I never got a real framerate increase, I managed to crank all graphics settings to High+ values while maintaining flyable framerate. I wish I could get 6800XT / 6900 for a test 🙂

For VR in DCS, I really wouldn't want to go with anything less than the mightiest of graphics cards that mortal man can conceive.

That means either RX 6900 XT, or an RTX 3090.  Maybe 3080, or RX 6800 XT if bread's tight--in which case, just save and wait until the really good one becomes available to you. VR doesn't come cheap, and if you're gonna fork over the cash, may as well get what you really need.

That way you can just fly the blinkin' thing for 5+ years instead of still wanting to upgrade, which would really suck after burning through that kind of dough 😆

Hope I just upgrade proofed for a good while...

Got selected for the New Egg Shuffle earlier and snagged a RX 6900XT.

1080 ti has served me well... can't wait to see the difference.

Nice, that should fire up the cpu side of your system and dcs being cpu dependent, some improvement will be noticed with your 1080ti.

I was not so lucky, enrolled on the Newegg shuffle for the gpus and was told I did not get in.
I would be looking out for another round of the event.

I am looking at your post again and I think you meant to say 6900xt. Either way 6900xt would be an awesome improvement over the 1080ti

I just went team green yesterday on a 3090 coming from a 1080ti.  It's beautiful at 12288 x 2160! I keep bumping sliders higher.

Hope your 6900XT is just as awesome for you!

Hmmm, want to upgrade my GPU. My choice would be RX6800XT, RX6900XT or RTX3090 for using with HP Reverb G2.

In these forums I read 3090 wouldn't be that good and vice versa. Can someone illuminate me please? Don't know what to buy.

Which of those cards is more available in your region, and which fits within your budget? I don't think there is a "wrong" choice here... There can be other considerations as well: perhaps you want a USB-C port on the graphics card itself for example, or if you want to play other games as well and you still have an older G-Sync monitor that doesn't support VRR on AMD cards, ...
I am very happy with my 6900XT 🙂
