Glasses (bifocals) and VR

One thing I completely overlooked, though it was a plain as the glasses on my face!

Any other optically-challenged VR pilots out there? How does it work for you? Any tips/tricks or should I just find a big monitor and resign myself to using TrackIR?

I typically use my non-bi-focal prescription frames when playing in VR. Though I have to notice a huge difference for the times I left my progressive frames on.

Get lenses from Vropticians or similar, wearing glasses inside your hmd  is a risk to your glasses and the hmd.  You just need your distance prescription.

In terms of focus there's no near or far in VR, the lenses typically focus the screens at about 1-1.2m (3-4ft ish) so whatever works for your vision at that distance will work fine.

Prescription lenses aren't necessary if your frames are a reasonably normal size, I've previously used Vives (original and pro) and am now on a Reverb G2 which have all accommodated my glasses perfectly well. I personally wouldn't fancy dealing with the inconvenience of having to put my glasses on every time i needed to look outside the headset.

I have been using bifocals with the Reverb G2 for the past month.  It is workable, but I think it does restrict the "sweet spot" some.  I have ordered prescription lens inserts to make it more comfortable and allow me to try different face gaskets.  The VR lenses can be scratched by your eyeglasses.  If you want to stick with your glasses, I would recommend a lens protector.  These are plastic spacers that fit around the VR lens to keep your glasses from contacting them.  You can find sellers on Etsy or you can print your own on a 3D printer.

Exactly!  That is why a lens spacer is great.  It protects both. 😉

I use both readers and distance glasses. Can't stand the restricted field of view navigating steps while using bifocals. I haven't ever need the bifocals readers in VR, but I understand others prescriptions may vary. I would however still recommend trying just your distance prescription thru vropticians. Glasses and VR HMD = uncomfortable.

Whatever you do, DON'T buy from WIDMOvr!  Their lenses are appalling quality with cheap packaging.  Their customer service is just as appalling and I wouldn't ever go near them again!

On the other hand, every dealing I have had with VROpticians  has been excellent.  Superb product and packaging along with excellent customer service.

That's strange. I had exactly the opposite experience with WIDMOvr. Quality lenses that snap on securely. Beautifully finished and nicely packaged.

Hmm, see attached. No hard case, poor packaging which led to it being damaged in transit, and 6 emails which have not been replied to since delivery in December.
Poor fit on G2 lenses with wobble and cheap surrounds.
Utterly appalling experience.

+1.
Yep, superb quality, service and packaging from VROpticians. I have bought several items from them for all the different HMDs I have owned. Only reason I went with WIDMOvr for the G2 was that VROpticians were way behind in terms of delivery dates.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got my lenses in from VR WAVE.  Very happy with the quality.  Good prices.  They come in a hard case and it took 17 days from ordering to having in my hands.  Their customer communication is top-notch.  I forgot to include a copy of my prescription when ordering and they were right on it.  There are discount codes for 5% off through several YouTube sites including MRTV.

I got my VRWave lense in yesterday and tried them out.... I DON’T Like them ! The quality is great but be careful they will fall off if you have to lift the headset up to take a peek at something, keyboard, monitor or take a sip of your beer/beverage. It’s alittle better in clarity but not the Wow !!!! Hell Yeah ! Better. I really don’t like how it attaches either like I said if you don’t check it every once in awhile they will fall off as you lift the headset off.
I guess it takes alittle time to get use to like everything else. It’s not VRWaves fault and would of been better if it attaches magnetically  like other VR sets. Very good quality and excellent packaging and shipment.

My vroptician lenses click home, no issues with slippage, are you sure they are on correctly?

Yes, the thing is you have to push kinda hard for the lense to stay on. And when you slide your headset up to look at keyboard the lense hit the front of my head. I just don’t like them and may try another brand like vroptian.
