anth455 Posted March 8, 2021 Posted March 8, 2021 Hi I started playing in the old days a long time ago now when what is now DCS was lomac. But this is my first forum post! DCS is now probably the best combat related sim we have with few other choices. I work as a software developer and understand how hard it would be to create something as complex as DCS. Because of this I understand bugs are impossible to stop getting into releases. So the problem I have is the mfd text on the F18 and harrier is not clear. On the F18 it is clearer than the harrier on the top two mfds but the bottom one is not even clear if you zoom into the maximum you can. Changing brightness and contrast does improve things a bit but then the map is wrong on the hsi etc. The hsi on both Harrier and F18 looks a lot brighter than I would think it should be? The fonts used do not allow the text to be readable because they are to thick and characters too near each other. I realise the Harrier forum has a locked post saying they are looking into this. But have people not noticed it looks like it is a wider problem if the F18 has similar issues with the bottom mfd? For me this is really disappointing that this appears to not be a priority to be fixed quick. I think if something had a bug this big where I work by boss would be pushing me to fix it very quick. It is not a small issue that you can't read things that are essential to fly! I get that part of it may be an effort to make it look more realistic but we run DCS on computer monitors and VR. It must be useable on the hardware people have. Can this please be looked at with a higher priority? I had planned to get a VR setup and currently use a 34" 1440 monitor but it would not make sense to get any more hardware if I can't use it! Thanks Anthony
anth455 Posted March 8, 2021 Author Posted March 8, 2021 If anyone is interested this appeared to look a lot better in the 2.5.6.59625 version for the harrier but the F18 still has the same problem. This can be reverted back using this command: DCS_updater.exe update 2.5.6.59625 from C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\bin I will create some screenshots later to compare.
Flappie Posted March 11, 2021 Posted March 11, 2021 Hi @anth455. It would have been interesting for us to see screenshots of your issue. ---
Shep 2001 Posted May 1, 2021 Posted May 1, 2021 I have same issue MFD's not clear in the AV8 im running 2.7 but a few versions back it was definitely clearer. I use Track IR.
Flappie Posted May 1, 2021 Posted May 1, 2021 Can you please attach a screenshot showing the issue? ---
Montrose Posted May 3, 2021 Posted May 3, 2021 I attached a couple of images - this is full brightness and contrast adjustment. its only form say 10:00 till 2 mission time. Wasn't like this prior to 2.7. Hornet is a bit better but I posted them anyways. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
anth455 Posted October 25, 2021 Author Posted October 25, 2021 I give up on this in March. Was waiting to see if it was fixed. But last week decided to try it again. Its maybe better than it was in March but the old version is not available now? I found an old pic and created a new one for as it is now. See attached side by side. The issue appears to be the spacing between characters is 0 they touch! Can this not be changed? Maybe it looks more like this in the real thing but you can't read anything until you zoom in a lot! I can't imagine its realistic the characters touch?
anth455 Posted October 26, 2021 Author Posted October 26, 2021 Managed to change the spacing by altering the two values in the image. Also turning the gain down helps as in the pic. Can this be set to a lower default?
anth455 Posted January 31, 2022 Author Posted January 31, 2022 I found the best fix for this was to put a low value in stroke_fuzziness variable of the file Mods\aircraft\AV8BNA\Cockpit\Displays\Display_StrokeDefs.lua For some reason this is applied to the hud so that then becomes sharper also. It then looks a bit more like the above posted pic. It still has some blur and flicker to it. Looks like ED are trying to make it look like an old crt. My main problem with manual editing of the lua files is it is removed by updates. Can we please have an option (check box in the options screen) to remove any rendering effects that are applied to the mfd of all aircraft so the fonts are as clear as they can be? It looks like an effect is applied to the text so it looks more like a real old CRT. This is not helpful if you are on a small monitor or VR you do not want to make it even harder to read the text. It would be ok if after zooming in I could see the text has some blur but not while zoomed out because that makes it hard to read.
