Shallow Ports

Recommended Posts

It seems like the ports in the Gulf Map at least are very shallow, and large ships are unable to move when placed in the ports. Is this accurate? It doesn't seem to be the case:

In some extreme instances, depths near the shore are only around 5 ft. I've also seen small boats like the Armed Speedboat become stuck in bays on small islands like the Tunbs.

Ports that are so shallow that you can't get the larger ships or even armed boats get to stuck is very questionable.

Like what is the draft of a armed boat? For the sea operations it is likely around 100-120m and about 50-80 cm for shallow water/river use? A normal rowing boat has draft about 15 cm when empty and adding example 300 kg weight doesn't make it about twice that.

You can't perform a landing or shore operations if you get stuck from keel 100 meters from the shore.

I don't know if this is a separate issue but ships don't sink at Batumi port when I bomb them, I thought the water might be shallow there as well. I have no idea if this is realistic or not though, I am no expert.

This seems to be a general problem with all maps in DCS World. Being a digital combat simulator that includes large naval ships, ED should check all ports on all maps for appropriate depth.

Are you having an issue with a ship somewhere? If so, please provide a track.

I think to move forward with this, we need specific ports that are not working as expected based on real world info, there is a lot of shallow water ports around this area, so some may be accurate, that said, we do seem to have some overly shallow waters (seen it in Marianas as well and has been corrected)

So please give specific examples and expected depths please.

Thanks!

This seemingly got lost at some point, but it's still an issue.

I understand the request for specific info, but I really think the issue is every port. 99% of them have some area where the depth is as low as 7-10ft. You could nearly stand in them safely, yet they have static tankers as scenery in the sim.

@draconus listed some ports in the post I quoted earlier:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_of_Jebel_Ali

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mina_Rashid

US SuperCarrier at Dubai Jebel Ali:

https://nara.getarchive.net/media/the-aircraft-carrier-uss-george-washington-cvn-73-pulls-into-port-jebel-ali-5d9757

In addition the port at Fujairah has a depth listed of over 50 ft:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_of_Fujairah

Like most ports on the map it can reach around 10 ft min, barring any passage by a large or even mid size ship

I also found a quick list of port depths, not sure if this is accurate but it makes more sense to me than some of the DCS depths:

1520137695466?e=1659571200&v=beta&t=IlLS

And I have a mission with various boats trying to leave ports around the DCS map. They fail in 99% of cases that aren't the patrol boat which can get through 1-3 ft of depth it looks like. The only non patrol boat to be able to leave a port is a Combate from the Bandar Abbas port

According to the https://www.dpworld.com/en/uae/ports-and-terminals site we can confirm RL depths of ports:

Jebel Ali (Dubai): 15m (cargo terminal)

Mina Rashid (Dubai): 10m (cargo), 5m (coastal)

There's also this site with anchorage depth provided to some ports:

I'm not sure anymore, but I believe it was the "Bathymetry" update that broke the ports. IIRC before the/some update the ships just drove through the seafloor if it was too shallow, but at some point there was a change, and the ships got stuck. Even smaller ones, like the new Combattante can't use large ports anymore, like Bandar Abbas. Most of the ports on the map suffer from this issue. The small marinas have unnecessary "choke points" between the wall-gaps at the entry. 10ft or less. Bandar e Jask for example has a small port with warehouses, but no ships can enter the port except (maybe) the smallest boats. When I go to google maps I see a couple warships that look like the very Combattante ship we have in DCS. (And that's great, really appreciate new PG assets!) But in DCS it can't even sail out of Bandar Abbas.

To me the problem is pretty obvious: When the map was made, seafloor depth didn't matter, but now it does and something needs to be done. Most ports are unusable, especially for medium and large ships. Most of the major port areas are affected, ports that see quite large ships IRL. Remove the collision of the sea floor, or make corrections to port depths. But right now the situation is not good at all.

Correct me if I'm wrong 🙂 (I could make a mission/track, but all you have to do is hover with mouse on F10 map and/or place ships in large ports and watch them getting stuck.)

I'd love to start my long freeroam missions with the carrier leaving port. Maybe do a huey supply mission while they leave, or just sit back and enjoy the eye candy. Hop into the F-14 when the carrier turns into the wind.

PS: I just checked Jebel Ali Naval Base with the Forrestal. The port is way too shallow and it got stuck.

@NineLine

I think the posts from June contain the desired info. If you need a more specific format like a simple table of ports and depths, I guess I could do that by looking through the sources. Please let me know. Thanks

Any progress in this matter, running any mission with naval assets you need to do a tideus mapping of the waypoints by dragging them where u want to go, if waypoint get stuck you know the ship will as well.
Most cargo, if not all have a cleared pathway into their ports, witch has been mechanicly cleared to the approtiet depth .
Solution for ED is to simply do a min depth in all ports and make sure it has a path in, some ports has the depth bu then yo have ridges outside that prevents the pathing. Very annoying.

Can someone report this issue please? Currently the tag says missing info, which doesn't make any sense because the problem is absolutely crystal clear. So is the solution, but it's up to the developers to do something about it.
