CombatWombat's Airfield Diagrams: Mariana Islands

I've been doing some pre-work over the last few weeks for the upcoming map so I thought I would start a Wombat Guide airfield thread for the upcoming Mariana Islands map.  If you are like me you probably didn't know much about this region, so some positioning and general layout may help to conceptualise the map.  At present Airfields 1 to 8 and the Weapons range at 9 have been confirmed.  The remaining islands North of Farallon have not been confirmed however the only other airfield in the region is at Pagan listed here as 10.  The region diagram is subject to change as Im playing with this layout and will be rescaled when ED confirm the map. As is the usual approach I will update the Airfield Layouts diagram as I add items to this thread post release.

I have to admit for a non-airfield diagram based on the wish list threads I am happy with how Farallon came out. I wish I could get a beta pass to start on the others.

I think this version is more or less finalised, have zoomed in on the area Wags indicated would be included initially though have the option to resize as needed.

Hey Yes I have these.  The DCS map doesn't always align with the real world, sometimes its based on a different year to the present some times there's a change to suit the sim so all you can do is start with a good base and see what happens with the actual map.

After a little messing around I also figured out how to get magnetic variation which varies between .9E at Guam and .6E at Saipan with a .06W annual change.  I will correct the slides once the upload is approved.

I know Orote Field is listed as inactive, but is very much usable. I lived in the nearby base housing when I was stationed there, and on occasion would hear C-130's practicing on that field. Touch and goes, and full stop landings.

 

The single eastern helipad was always there, the three on the western end are more recent (mid 2000's). The munitions bunkers were built around then as well.

Orote is not an active field in the game at present. It has parking numbers assigned, but you can’t access them and there’s not radio so I suspect it may become active in the future.

Thanks a lot for this, but I have found that when I try to place them on the path:

 

\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\Mods\terrains\MarianaIslands\Kneeboard 

 

they dont appear within the Sim's kneeboard. I tried also the "Kneeboard_orig" folder name to no avail. 

 

Of course this is no fault of your own, but a bug of the new map .. while we wait for ED to address this, I will place the pages that I need inside the MIZ file of my missions, so that they can show up on the kneeboard, like this:

That’s a solid bet given Orote Field’s history. I’m certain it will be an active one, alongside the old abandoned fields on the other islands when the WWII version of this map comes around (minus the trio of helipads). 

 

To summarize the history, the US was interested in putting an airfield there in 1941, but never did before the Japanese invaded and captured the island. The IJN liked the area and built one. It was damaged during the Battle of Guam when the US recaptured the island in 1944. Our Seabees repaired the airfield, which then saw regular use until shortly after the end of the war. 
 

I’m not sure how much maintenance it got past 1946, it seemed in pretty good shape when I was there (even drove my truck on it once). No facilities (radios, fuel, maintenance, etc) as we see on the map, though the Navy keeps the grass mowed regularly. Looking forward to seeing how this map shapes up in the future for us in DCS.

DCS 2.7.4.9632 Open Beta - 21.07.2021

 

- Antonio B. Won Pat Intl: the runway is now completely flat (255 ft), which differs from the real-world sloped runway.

 

Seems to be no other changes.
