So do I!

I was wrong about my last FolderChanges log interpretation: one temporary file is still being written when the crash happens. It's one of the 3 ".bin" files, the second one in the list. Here's how I see this:

  1. Launch FolderChanges when you're about to load a mission.
  2. Set root folder to "C:\Users\your_username\Saved Games\".
  3. Load first mission.
  4. Hit Shift+R to reload the mission (repeat until you get the second mission loading crash).
  5. After the crash, get back to FolderChanges and stop the logging (red square icon).
  6. Select all lines.
  7. File > Save selected items.
  8. Choose "HTML File - Horizontal" format, name the file and hit "Save".
  9. Open the HTML file.
  10. Find the ".crash" file line (near the end) and copy its creation date.
  11. Use Ctrl+F and paste the creation date.

You'll see one of the temporary mission file was still being written when the crash happened: the second ".bin" file.

Flappie - slight error in your instructions. Step 2 should be "C:\Users\your_username"

I have done this (FolderChange log attached) and can confirm I also have the second bin file modified at the same time as the crash file is created. The Last Mission track file also has the same modified time on it

I managed to capture the crash with Process Monitor.

Screen capture shows that during loading 2nd mission there is attempt to write to dcs.log file and right after that edCore.dll crashes with following stack:

Just had time for a quick run this morning. It crashed on the 2nd mission using Shift-R to restart. So this is truly a 2nd mission crash and, as you noted earlier, that 2nd bin file is truncated.

BTW, I uninstalled OneDrive. Can find no reference to TacView in DCS's menu pages but I can't find any TacView saves under this new logon either.

Re DCS crashes on loading 2nd mission:

May15 9am. After disabling and uninstalling Tacview and restarting pc I successfully loaded 6 instant action missions in a row this morning. 2xF15, 4xA10, 2xF18. Hopefully this has resolved the issues on my pc. The version of Tacview I had was released pre DCS 2.7 open beta. A new update for Tacview is in beta testing so I will wait till that is released. Now I will continue some testing and increase my clouds which I had set to LOW quality. Then begin adding trusted aircraft mods (A4, MB339, A29A).

Can you please attach some of these second ".bin" files? I see mine have some readable text parts in them. Maybe we'll find something.

Unfortunately, I only have one because I delete the folder prior to starting the sim after a crash. But you're welcome to it.

Interesting to watch and see at what's occurring in the sim when those files are normally written. (I've PM'd you a link to a quick video I made--displays too much information for me to be completely comfortable posting it here. Our suspect file seems to be used to create the "LastMissionTrack.trk" or vise-versa. I think it's the former though because that trk is never written when there's a crash and the bin file is truncated. The other two seem to only be place holders of some sort. They are always empty until you exit the mission and, then, the only data they contain is the word: TXT.

You meant "BIN", right?

Thanks for the file. I thought mine were more filled with comprehensible text, but no. They look alike.

I ran a Windows Troubleshooter the other day for nothing to do with DCS but for a Microsoft Store issue I was having and I did that Thursday evening. Now I’m not saying this is the cure but honestly since that evening I haven’t had not 1 crash out of many hours and 3 days. I just wanted to put that out. I’m totally updated on everything with DCS rig bios and all.
I was also having the second mission crash thing going as everyone else and as of that Thursday evening I can’t duplicate it.

Disregard still a crash here and there. Just today it started doing the second mission crash.... something is not welcoming a handshake. No crash in a multiplayer server mainly single player.

Had the same since the recent update patch for 2.7. Lots of CTD in any second mission loading.

After deleting the the .fxo and .meta2 files of following main DCS Open beta folder, the CTD are gone and so far didn´t happen anymore:

../DCSWorldOpenBeta/Mods/terrains/Normandy/misc/metacache/dcs/

and

../DCSWorldOpenBeta/Mods/terrains/Normandy/misc/shadercache/

In the "../metacache/dcs/" -folder there were *.meta2 files dated 17.04.2021, which is the date I´ve run after the big 2.7 update for first time. Now, after deleting these *meta2 files, they were not created again and the folder stays empty.

In the "../shadercache/" -folder there were *.fxo files dated 17.04.2021, which is the date I´ve run after the big 2.7 update for first time. Now, after deleting these *.fxo files, they were not created again and the folder stays empty.

I´ve done this for every map ( caucasus, NTTR, TheChannel, PersianGulf, Normandy ) in the "../DCSWorldOpenBeta/Mods/terrains/" - folder.

Not sure if it is coincident or something different related to the problem, but since deleted the .fxo and .meta2 files remaining there from the original 2.7 update, I had no more CTD.

Are there any other distinguishing features of the files you're referencing aside from the date? I recently did a hardware update so all of my files are dated the same. What would the file names be?

the file names in these folders were similar in the way of being long numbers like the ones in the saved games/.../fxo and metasahder2 folders.

Didn´t fired up DCS since then and waiting for the patch ( also waiting for the clouds to be fixed in VR ).

No more crashes today witrhout the win8 compatibility trick. Could those who used this trick give a try without it to confirm?

Nothing changed on my rig except some windows antivirus updates yesterday (by the way got exceptions for DCS folders). Was able to start more than 10 instant action in a row.

What about loading any of your saved missions? And, sorry . . . don't cheer too early, it's not all evening yet.

Did try with instant action, with some missions in DLC campaigns and with through the inferno. So far only one crash in the last 3 hours.

Agree with you that the day is not finished yet... I just relay here my experience with those crashes. I'm not saying i've got any magic recipe.

Just switched compatibility mode back off and as reliable as a swiss watch....boom crash at 2nd mission load.😪

Unticked it this morning and no more crashes. for info, still running DCS as administrator (but the option is ticked for 2 weeks now), so it does not impact.

As said earlier the only changes on my computer since yesterday are just some windows antivirus definitions updates.

Have more of you tried to uninstall this KB? It's been widely reported as problematic. KB5001330

https://www.windowslatest.com/2021/04/21/april-2021-patch-is-now-causing-trouble-for-more-windows-10-users/

Normally you shouldn't have to do these things, but if you are doing differential diagnosis it can be a interesting test.

For security reasons you should install it again after your tests have concluded.

It can be valuable to know whether this update is part of the problem-stack.

As far as I can tell KB5001330 should be automatically uninstalled via WIndows Update. See this article for details: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-pushes-emergency-fix-for-windows-10-kb5001330-gaming-issues/

Assuming that fix is what was pushed to my computer yesterday (?), I experienced a crash immediately after installing it.

This morning's test crash--does this make me a crash test dummy?

@Flappie Started with the same protocol. Restarted the mission fine two times. Decided to force the issue by quitting to the Desktop and restarted the sim (timestamp 07:33). Started the Su-25T mission, quit, restarted, crash.

PS. This is getting boring.

Thanks. I don't see anyting new.

PS: To be honest, I'm getting bored too.
Aren't we all, but short of getting a dev build or full debug build on a problem machine I don't what else we can do - takes me back to my time leading development teams building mission critical systems for police and airport clients where some of the 'features' took months to track down
