nscode Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Four naval radars Falcon II mounted on Croatian coast are going to be dismantled and Croatia is suing US Metric System company which made them. The radars were bought in 1999 and American and Croatian staff were trying to make them work since, without success. Due to frequent software and some hardware problems, the radars operated 300 instead of predicted 30 000 hours. Source (in Croatian) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Kuky Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 That's a bummer ... No longer active in DCS...
4c Hajduk Veljko Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Reading the article, it appeares that this is the only radar of this type in the world? Also, to which court will Croatia submit the lawsuit? nscode Posted September 27, 2008 Author Posted September 27, 2008  but it got some parts surprisingly well :D @Hajduk: it would appear so. The court is usually agreed upon by both sides when signing the contract, but since even the contract is somewhat disputed.. who knows. Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Vekkinho Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Well, Croatia bought this junk just to receive US support for NATO invitation! Don't forget we're considering a fleet of multirole combat planes as our Fishbeds start falling apart during airshows so I wonder how many more false decisions must we make! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Brit_Radar_Dude Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Thinking about buying US equipment? Get a good lawyer and check the small print!! A better bet is to buy British :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Sorry Death, you lose! It was Professor Plum....
GGTharos Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Interesting - it seems like a very bad case of horrible customer support on part of that company (it happens that sometimes companies value certain customers more than others) ... Also it appears that google doesn't know much about this particular radar - I wonder if it isn't all that prolific? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Vekkinho Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Well radars we talk here are actually...protos! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
GGTharos Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 They're prototypes? That figures :P A country that's willing to be an early adopter should be willing to dish out for risk management at least. Here it sounds like perhaps the Croatians had the hood pulled over their eyes with respect to this thing; such problems are to be expected, that's why there are costly and lengthy development phases for such equipment usually :P [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
nscode Posted September 29, 2008 Author Posted September 29, 2008 Oh, and the company doesn't exist anymore Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
GGTharos Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Yep, that figures even more - they should have gone for better established maritime surveillance radars. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
nscode Posted September 29, 2008 Author Posted September 29, 2008 The way things go in this part of the world, they probably went for larger percentage for people who made the deal :( Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
GGTharos Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 If you mean bribes, then it's definitely happened before. I mean er, 'gifts of appreciation' :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
hitman Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Sh1t happens. You cant squeeze blood out of a turnip, and its on the host country to make good use of prototypes. If you cant afford the maintenance, dont buy the equipment. That can be said about ANYONE. Its like a kid who works at Pep Boys buying a Hummer at his first job. Cant afford the gas, the mainenance, insurance... nscode...I just noticed your sig. Are you saying that the M1 never scored a kill? Just a question...
nscode Posted September 29, 2008 Author Posted September 29, 2008 (edited) Yea, but if contract says 30000 hours, you expect to get 30000. That's also a huge mistake on the developers part to make such a claim about untested hardware. Assuming that is in the contract.. and I doubt we'll get to see it. No... it got 30%.. on that particular test. Most crews were illiterate btw ;) Edited September 29, 2008 by nscode Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
hitman Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 No... it got 30%.. on that particular test. Most crews were illiterate btw ;) I would hardly call US soldiers illiterate. Where do you get this info?

Renato71 Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Key element in any arms deal (or any deal regarding armed forces) is not logic or anything alike. Key element is percentage that arms dealers take into their pocket. Each person that "contributes" to conclusion of contract is entitled to a fee. According to the article, it was Vladimir Zagorac that pushed the deal. He also pushed ONLY the deals that were useless or expensive. For country, not for him. It was not the country that signed that deal. But I'm glad someone is having some brains (and balls) to call this off. I'm selling MiG-21 activation key. Also selling Suncom F-15E Talon HOTAS with MIDI connectors, several sets. Contact via PM.
nscode Posted September 29, 2008 Author Posted September 29, 2008 I would hardly call US soldiers illiterate. Where do you get this info? who said they were US spldiers ;) ok... no more.. srry :) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Brit_Radar_Dude Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Google translation: Croatia is radare bought from American companies Metric System when they were still in the phase of development and is the only country that has bought them. At the same time he bought five air radara 117 FPS, which proved to be excellent. The moral of this story is not to take risks and buy unproven technology. Instead buy proven technology that you know will work - FPS-117 has been around for ever since the 1970's. The RAF bought theirs (known as Type 92) in the 1980's.
