3080 not enough VRAM?

dg6546

Recommended Posts

I am currently using a G2.

While in Mixed Reality Portal, it consumes about 2gb VRAM already. Then I launch steamvr, it used a total of 3GB of VRAM.

After that I open up DCS, I see 9.7/10GB of VRAM usage (BY fpsVR) and it started VRAM overflow (dropping flames, purple line in fpsVR)

How do you coup with this problem? By lowering the VRAM usage of WMR and STEAMVR, or lower DCS settings? (but for me it is already minimum... it looks so bad already)

Finally my card is not constrained by its processing power, but it's VRAM.

Given your settings in game I would suggest the only thing left to do is MSAA down x2, what is your crm in steam?

Your only chance is to lower SS settings and anything else that will cost VRAM usage (textures, any additional monitor etc.). For a high resolution HMD like the G2 and DCS, VRAM is a bottleneck. https://forums.eagle.ru/topic/246767-more-vram-helps-a-lot-with-dcs-vr-performance/

In the end it depends on the missions you play, a small singleplayer mission will show much lesser VRAM usage than a full blown module soup on MP in Syria.

It's enough VRAM for DCS.

I get consistent 45+ FPS with much higher settings than you, even in multiplayer.

The above is my current aerobatics 90 FPS low fidelity setting for pure flying fun. I use 3128x3056 SteamVR, MSAA 2x and higher settings when I am contend with 45 FPS+ for flights focusing on systems simulation and image fidelity.

To balance GPU and CPU frametimes I use fpsVR. The settings are a moving target with patches and hardware upgrades.

Crm is custome resolution modifier, the steam % I would not recommend running above 100%…

Turn MSAA down to x 2

@FoxTwo

Yeah, those settings may be fine for a while.
But sooner or later in a massive MP mission a 3080 will fall short because average VRAM usage will become >11GB over time.

Turning down as much as possible is the only option. A 3080 might be enough for VR and a G2 running at full resolution for "normal" VR games, but both of our most modern flightsims aren't normal in any aspect.
Just for comparison: these are my 2.7 settings in the options.lua, besides a lot of system wide optimizations. Smooth 40 fps locked in 80 Hz mode (frametime varies from 16ms to 24ms) in 40 player scenarios on Syria map. 2648x2740 per eye and Reshade sharpening for VR enabled (before ReShade for VR was released, i was running 2880x3200 per eye). I can play these missions for hours, switch to all available modules without any issue.

I have not ever encountered any vram not enough problem with my old 1080ti (Yes, 1080ti got more VRAM than 3080), also OG vive.

then its  more likely that you have some other environmental problem if your crm is operating at 50% of the steam 100%

IDK I'm pretty sure my sytem (G2, 3090) eats up most of the VRAM, I think basically DCS will eat it all then let it go as it needs to.

Yes, it maybe possible for a while, if you only use one module for the whole time. But my playstyle is different, those missions offer a wide variety of targets and objectives, so i switch modules often for the best aircraft for the particular job. Raiding airfields with a Ka-50 or Harrier behind enemy lines, sink ships with a F-18 or Viggen, attacking a vehicle convoy with a A-10C or going air to air with an F-14...
This is how VRAM usage looks then: https://forums.eagle.ru/uploads/monthly_2020_10/VRAM_usage_Syria.jpg.0c970d322e0f7232b2fc7c0f2f5ff0ba.jpg

This is a problem with DCS and asset loading/culling. I mean, you can brute force it with VRAM I guess, kind of? But if you want it fixed don't look for a hardware solution.

I rarely see DCS actually using more than 7.5GB of VRAM.

For those of you running mutli hour multiplayer missions and changing airframes often, maybe you should be asking ED to change their 32bit normal maps to 8 bit to reduce VRAM load.

  • 2 weeks later...

From everything I have read, DCS is not Rodin's Thinker and your not going to get it to work with a sculptors hammer. DCS is a very big freaking boulder and your going to need the biggest badest sledge hammer you can get your hands on to make it work. And until the next generation for GC's come out the 3090 is the biggest hammer in the bag.

Or, DCS can start writing code that takes advantage of some of the performance built for the cards be they AMD or Nvidia. Maybe AMD's newest FSR enhancement can bridge the gap since they say it will also work on Nvidia cards.
