EMER FM function

Recommended Posts

Could someone please clarify the EMER FM function on the VHF FM radio head?  If guard is 121.5 AM, what is the function of this position since the FM radio cannot tune to 121.5 AM?

Also, if I select EMER AM on the AM radio, does it just receive/monitor 121.5 or would it also transmit on 121.5?

EMER FM. When the radio is set to this position, the guard channel is
automatically selected. This selection has no effect with VHF/AM.

In real, vhf fm guard is 40.5.  Not sure if thats true in DCS though.  Monitoring simple radio may give a hint?

Selecting EMER will also transmit on that radio’s guard freq.

Thanks.  Before posting this question I searched all over the web and through all of my Air Force flight manuals for an FM guard frequency and couldn't find anything that said FM Guard is 40.5.

Where did you find that info?

Guard is lots of different frequencies. Emergency frequencies are 40.5, 121.5, 243 for VHF FM, VHF AM, UHF AM respectively. You can remember that 40.5 x  3 = 121.5 and 121.5 x 2 = 243.

ARC-186 (V) was designed to be a radio which could do VHF AM and VHF FM communications using the same radio system. It can also be configured to only work on AM (of FM) to the exclusion of FM (or AM) operation. Notice that the both forward and rear radio frequencies can set between 30 and 159.975 MHz. Looking into the A-10A -1 which has radios according to the DCS modules the forward radio is exclusively AM band configuration and rear radio is exclusively FM band configuration. Any time a radio is set to an invalid frequency a warning tone is played in the headset. This applies to manual frequencies, presets, or emergency selections. In the band which matches the radio configuration EMER _M gets the respective emergency frequency which also disables the KY-58. The EMER _M selection which the radio can't do would get the warning tone.

When tuned EMER _M you can talk and listen (and do DF with FM) on that frequency.

The TO that Puma talks about is for an A-10C of several configurations. The newer version has 164 (UHF), 210-1 (everything), 210-2 (everything) while older version has 186 instead of the second 210 (VHF FM). Neither of these configurations match our DCS A-10s. I don't know how the 186 manages 121.5 MHz even though it's only FM band configured. Maybe it borrows capability from the ARC-210.
