DCS: G-91R

Today, June 2nd 2021, is the 75th Anniversary of the Italian Republic - and we thought there was not a better day to announce our second commercial project for DCS - since, in real life, it was one of the biggest successes of the Italian aerospace industry.

DCS G.91

The G.91 is an Italian jet fighter aircraft of Cold War era designed and optimized for Strike and Recon missions. The G.91 originates in the NATO NBMR-1 competition in 1953, which sought a light fighter-bomber "Light Weight Strike Fighter" to be adopted as standard equipment across the air forces of the various member nations.

The G.91 was declared winner of the competition in 1958 and entered into operational service with the Italian Air Force in 1961, and with the West German Luftwaffe in the following year. It was also evaluated by the U.S.Army and adopted by Portuguese Air Force, who made extensive use of the type during the Portuguese Colonial War in Angola and Mozambique.

We will develop the following version: R1B (Italian version), R3 (German Version) and PAN (aerobatic version converted from the A version).

We have no release window at the moment - and needless to say screenshots are preliminary.

Awesome stuff! This should go very well with the Sabre, MiG-15bis and MiG-19.

Fairly lengthy service life too, should be a great fit for DCS.

SUPERB!! I'm so pleased to see this aircraft coming to DCS. These older aircraft are so much more distinct and have so much character than their modern counterparts. The G.91 is one of my favourites and, as others have mentioned, there are now starting to be a few aircraft from that era, which gives the G.91 an ecosystem in which to fly. Really good news (and I like the timing for the announcement too).

Best wishes IFE for this project!

Sooo, about that case of lambrusco I promised to send you if you made this a module, I guess I'll have to come through 😛

the small sabre

The pocket Sabre to be exact.

Soo,its a sabre with different instrumentation?

Aerodynamically it's similar (except it's almost half the size, it's about as large as a ww2 warbird), but its mission set is completely different.

We're getting a lot of these early 50's designs. Kinda feels like we need some period appropriate ground units and maps to complement them. And some more period AI aircraft to intercept.

Yeah, at the moment we've only got 4 ground units.

This bird was flying over the house, I was living in during my child hood, every day & night  (Fursty). I really loved it. It was one of the reasons why I was infected with the flying virus. It's so great that it will come to DCS now 👍!

Absolutely! One of my dream scenarios for DCS is a Korea map with the Sabre, Mig 15, Skyraiders, Bearcat, Sea Fury, Late model Corsairs etc... We've got some great assets already and hopefully more on the way and I think it's an era that has been largely missed by previous simulations. For DCS, especially with the complexity of aircraft development, a more complete Korea pack would be nice project to get stuck in to...

Virtual Horsemen - Right Wing (P-51)  - 2008...

Virtual Ultimate Fighters - Lead (P-47) - 2020...

+1 for Korea. I really doubt ED could develop a Korea map, I hope some interested 3rd party could do it, along with its assets.

Obviously great news for the Gina, another instant purchase as soon as available!

Super excited to hear that you will do the R version not the Y (want that one too TBH, but the R was used more).

Great news! I love this plane.

Will be able to carry A/A missiles?

For the records, the AIM-9B was tested only on the R4 variant without success.

Could this help?? ☺️

It is a joke. It would be great if we can use sidewinders but it is up to you.

Thanks for the answer!

We are collecting material to add also the R4 variant but it is not yet confirmed.
If we will make also the R4 we will consider the the sidewinder integration

the characteristic of the g-91 was to do without the runway.

With few exceptions every aircraft needs a runway. They don't all need PAVED runways, but they do need A runway.

On 6/2/2021 at 2:49 PM, Xilon_x said:

in DCS an SU-25 crashes as it exits the runway and goes onto the grass.

Yes, going from pavement to a ditch at 200kts is usually going to result in a crash. A ditch alongside a paved runway is not going to be prepared for handling a heavy aircraft at highspeed, because... why would it be? There's literally pavement right there. If you run off the pavement into a ditch, you will consistently crash in real life, too. A ditch is not the same thing as a packed, smoothed dirt field (ala the Normandy map runways) nor is it a paved motorway used by cars and trucks. This is not a difficult distinction to make, and it really amazes me people keep repeating this nonsense over and over around here.

On 6/2/2021 at 2:49 PM, Xilon_x said:

the G-91 surely in DCS will have the same problem as the su-25.

If this is what you're expecting an aircraft to do, then, yes, you will have the same issue with all of them. You cannot expect multi-ton aircraft to hit a gopher hole or large rock in a field and not have a negative experience. A minimally prepared field is NOT the same thing as a farmer's field or random meadow. Heavy and/or high speed aircraft need prepared fields, end of story.

What about Nord AS-20, is that also a later addition?
