Yeah, but when it's off in that video the fan blades look all... floppy. Are they made of soft rubber in real life too? 🤨

  No, they're made of foam.

Also why is everyone so surprised? They work in the Mi-8, too.

It's a running joke I suppose. Initially the fan didn't work in the Mi-8 early access and a lot of people were waiting eagerly for it to be included in one of the updates. It is a focal point of Soviet helicopter cockpits, you instantly want to see if it works.

Yes but how many speeds does it have? I am pretty sure It wasn't DI's Hind from 1996/98, but I seem to recall a video game from the 90's that depicted the Mi-24 and the fan actually had both low and high speed modeled. Or maybe I am just remembering it wrong... Anyone remember which title that was???

A-10C, AV-8B, F-16C, F/A-18C, KA-50, Mi-8, UH-1H, FC3, CA, WWII, NTTR, Normandy, Persian Gulf

Yes, you can see that here:

It's a Mi-2, but the fan is the same

Less likely to hurt one's finger or hand by mistake I suppose - this rubber is a smart design feature, I didn't know about that.

Not sure if the blades should be THAT floppy, though. In another Mi-2 vid on yt, with fan turned off, it shakes a bit every now and then, but not that much. Ah, whatever, most of us will keep it turned on anyway.

Whether or not completely accurate/realistic, I really like the wobbly fan!

Being able to actually see the helicopter vibration, makes the cockpit feel more "alive" I think. Together with a Simshaker Jetpad this'll be awesome!

One has to remember though that the nature of cmos sensor can exaggerate vibrations. In that Video it also looks like the gunners station is wobbling too (which it isn’t). In CCD camera footage of the mi-24 Cockpit, the fan wobbles a bit less.

here’s a comparison of ccd and cmos sensors with vibrations

Edit: found a video of the fan recorded with a CCD camera: It does wobble a little bit but not super noticeable

AFAIK the cabin of the Mi24P is slightly over-pressurized, and it should have a pretty robust air-conditioning system. Why does it need the fan? Does it get really hot in there even when the AC is on?

The cockpits and cargo cabin are all connected and pressurised, and all the doors are pneumatically sealed, making it NBC capable. There is an air conditioning system for circulating and filtering the air, and you can see the pipes and outlet nozzles of this system, which blow upward along the sills of the canopies to reduce condensation, and into each cockpit area, for either cooling, or heating, depending on the environment. The fans are there to keep all of this moving around, and can be positioned accordingly for the pilots’ comfort and benefit.

Thanks for the reply. The fan takes up a chunk of space in it's current placement, obstructing some of the view from the cockpit. Do you know whether there will be an option to move it, or hide it from view?

Hide it ?
Are you crazy! The fan in the Mi-24 cockpit is as important as the weaponry it carries ! 😁😁

I'd say that is debatable, but I don't want to start a flame war against the fan "purists" 🙂 In any case I don't really think it should be a problem, I fly in VR and it shouldn't be that difficult to move my head around when I need to look past the fan. Hopefully the visibility in VR will be "okay" so I can actually see what Im shooting at, but that's a whole other can of worms.

Sit in a car with AC on while parked on a clear field in the desert of Afghanistan and you'll have that one answered quickly 🙂

I remember from my flying days in Florida that even with AC a big, glassy cockpit can heat up uncomfortably, and you are grateful for any relief. There were days where I had to replace my ear seals more than twice (and those Clark's pads are expensive), just because sweat kept running into them.

That tells everything one needs to know how important feature it is (yes, it is a fake video from some sport event).
