Anybody like me? Own bundles of module and still fly with hog mostly...

Recommended Posts

I started with the A-10 10 years ago and it is still the only module I fly. I bought other modules out of curiosity and to support ED (although I wished there were other ways to support them and the content I really want). I do not have the time and willpower to learn another module as I do not fly that often in general. And the A-10 is the only module where stick and throttle are 1:1 with the real one if you use the TM Warthog HOTAS. I would really miss that.

i also have so many modules, it is not possible for me to learn them all. i can, however, start, take off, fly, and land with all of them. i can fight in F18 and F16 with a little rust. but A-10C II since the update has been my plane of choice.

It's all about HOTAS Warthog, really. Flying Hog exclusively for years, don't really care about the rest, and I own bunch of other modules (practically everything). Now, if someone (I hope thrustmaster) releases fully simulated F16 throttle, I might just consider taking up on F16 seriously. If I don't have authentic controller, I am not going to waste my time learning the surrogate HOTAS switchology. Been there, done that - decades ago, and I'm not going down that road again. BTW, been grounded since clouds update, waiting for ED to have mercy and finally fix horrible TGP FLIR bug which at the moment makes Hog unflyable.

Started with Flaming Cliffs, hated it, never got into it. Bought the Hawk. Ha. Ha.

Deleted DCS from my HD, forgot about it.

Then I got a VR HMD. Tried a flight sim, was stunned. Remembered DCS. Jumped into the Flanker, and started to smile. Flew the Eagle and the Hog - smile became a grin. Then got the "C" Hog. Grin widened. Played the Hog almost exclusively, even though I started buying modules all the time. Now I own them all (except some warbirds) and have flown next to none. About three years ago I started to fly the Bug when I replaced my worn-out TM Hog setup with Virpil Hardware and had to re-learn the HOTAS mapping anyway, and a friend started to fly with me at least three times a week. Loved it, we flew it near-exclusively. And then, about 9 months ago, I made the big mistake to take the Huey out of storage.

Today I fly mostly rotor wings (favoring Huey and Hind), with the Bug a distant third place. The C Hog? Well, the new APKWS are surely nice, and there are few start-up procedures that come as easily to me (and that I understand as fully) as the Hogs. But somehow, my heart now belongs to other airframes. I've penciled in the Harrier for next year (I've only flown it twice so far) as well as the Falcon - but they'll likely be bumped by the Apache. Gosh, life's decisions are hard! 🙂

A-10C II was my very first module. Tried hard, got frustrated, moved to F-5, F-14, F-16, Huey, Hind, Mig-21, Flaming Cliff +++

Now I am back to the A-10C II and enjoy it alot.

Favorites depending on my current mood:

  • For CAS: A-10C II

  • A2A and high threat (SAMS, planes etc) missions: F-16

  • For low level threat missions with focus on navigation and flying: Mig-21 (F-5 is also nice)

  • Helicopter: Huey (Hind is awesome, especially the start-up and in co-op, but too much in a beta for me; Petrovitch not complete enough, changing keybinds frequently etc)

Yeah, DCS is just better with "1M1M" rule or with my initial rule: "1M100HRS" (one module 100 hours) 🙂

I stuck to Huey for 100 hrs, then Mi-8, 100 hrs, A-10C (like 80 hrs or so, initially) and then... then all of a sudden I went nuts, bought a metric buttload of modules and since then have been jumping from one to another even on a daily basis. That is just soo wrong! Currently I'm looking for a doctor who will talk me back into focusing on one module at a time. If you know a good psychiatrist, please drop me their phone number, thanks 😉

As for the Hawg, I think it's still the best DCS module. Some other modules come closer and closer in terms of quality, but are they there yet? I'm not sure.
The manual is so thick that you can actually learn the bird, dive into every nook and cranny (one by one or you'll choke), which is super important for such a complex A/C. Plus (probably the biggest selling point) once you build muscle memory for that mammoth of HOTAS, it feels so freaking great! You really become one - the plane and the driver. Last night I played with LANTIRN in the Tomcat... gee, if you compare it to HMCS+LITENING in the Hawg (and markpoints etc.), the Cat looks just so cheap (though otherwise a great fighter, of course). Plus... the arsenal hanging down from the wings - both the amount of weapons and their versatility, a "kaboom porn", men! Plus she doesn't consume fuel, sort of, or if she does you can sip some more from a tanker. Oh, and the BRRT... no, wait - the BRRT with a GUN PAC, as if the BRRT alone wasn't enough!

The only missing bit is carrier ops. Well, you can't have everything. You can only have everything minus one, but that's quite a lot, isn't it?

Apart from that she's ugly, slow and underpowered, but... who cares? 😉
