DCS E-3C Sentry model with E-3A old AN/APY-1 Doppler radar BUG

Reporting, that we have in DCS E-3C Sentry 3D model (C-variant also mentioned in DCS Encyclopedia), which was equiped with AESA AN/APY-2 radar and should have at least same performance as Chinese KJ-2000 AESA radar. Altough some E-3A was also equiped with AESA AN/APY-2 radar.

Remove old AN/APY-1 for newer AN/APY-2 radar with estimated perfomance of modern AESA radar (or same as KJ-2000).

  • GumidekCZ changed the title to DCS E-3C Sentry model with E-3A old AN/APY-1 Doppler radar BUG

E-3A virants were upgraded to AN/APY-2 AESA radar, so the designation of Sentry model doesnt really matter.

https://www.airvectors.net/ave3.html

"The E-3 has evolved considerably over the decades. The original 24 "Core" E-3s were, as mentioned, upgraded to E-3B standard under the "Block 20" program, which featured an improved AN/APY-2 radar, with a basic maritime surveillance mode -- as well as CC-2 processor, plus addition of five more SDUs, for a total of 14 operator stations. The first upgrade was redelivered in 1984. The nine "Standard" E-3s, the E-3Cs, were the same, but added "Have Quick" secure voice radios. "

On top of that, try to prove here, that there was E-3 with AN/APY-1 able work with Link16 datalink ... Link16 was installed after 1990´s and therefore that E-3 already equiped with AN/APY-2.

Link16 service:

https://www.airforcemag.com/article/comms-through-the-aerial-layer/

"The Link 16 data link debuted in the 1970s with large terminals at ground stations and aboard AWACS. Air Force F-15Cs then acquired the links, and by the 1990s, Link 16 reached a range of US and NATO fighters and airborne battle managers like JSTARS, Rivet Joint, and the NATO alliance’s own AWACS aircraft."

This is E-3A before upgrade: Its easy to recognize that this old variant with AN/APY-1 is missing something, that we have on model in DCS.

AN/APY-2

Its a PD radar. Where did you find info about AESA?

Beside article you quoted is of dubious scientific value. Mere reinterpretation of previosly known references, with no actual contribution, except in expressing the opinion.

Our E-3 is at least a Block 30/35 aircraft owing to the various bulges on the front and sides of the fuselage (which are part of the AN/AYR-1 ESM/ELINT system), which means it's from the mid 90s at the absolute earliest.

For the USAF, that makes it possibly an E-3B (at least according to C:MO) or definitely an E-3C (for Block 30 and 35 respectively). [1] For NATO, they still have the E-3A but upgraded in line with the E-3B and E-3C [2] (note how the image depicts a NATO E-3A, but with AN/AYR-1/2 present, see the OP's 1st link for a citation on the NATO E-3A using the AN/APY-2).

To make it more accurate, they could duplicate the entry in the database, rename one to E-3B/C and have it be the one with the USAF livery, with the existing E-3A having the NATO livery - something that would take maybe a couple of minutes.

In any case, for the aircraft depicted, the AN/APY-2 radar is accurate. Given the simplified nature of AI radars in DCS - this just involves increasing the max detection distance and the max measuring distance.

At least according to the C:MO database, the AN/APY-1 should have a range of 300 nmi [3] and the AN/APY-2 should have a range of 350 nmi [4]. In DCS, it has a max measuring distance of ~270 nmi but a maximum detection distance of ~216 nmi [5].

I think this radar is a PESA, but I've yet to find an actual citation. The antenna face certainly looks like a phased array (though it could be a planar array, slotted-waveguide - though not sure how it would measure elevation), but none of the OP's links claim it's an AESA.
