Add South Vietnam and East Germany as factions

As Baco said, the GDR is already in (though it might be better to call it East Germany in the country list), the only thing here that isn't in is West Germany/FRG, though we can use 'Germany' (as in reunified Germany) as a stand-in.

But +1 on Vietnam, and having separate North and South factions as well as the unified one we have now.

The other things I'd like to see are former nations and republics (namely socialist republics).

Modules I own: F-14A/B, Mi-24P, AV-8B N/A, AJS 37, F-5E-3, MiG-21bis, F-16CM, F/A-18C, Supercarrier, Mi-8MTV2, UH-1H, Mirage 2000C, FC3, MiG-15bis, Ka-50, A-10C (+ A-10C II), P-47D, P-51D, C-101, Yak-52, WWII Assets, CA, NS430, Hawk.

Terrains I own: South Atlantic, Syria, The Channel, SoH/PG, Marianas.

System:

If you want to be correct then there was neither a "east-germany" nor a "west-germany". They were only informally called that way like people speak of "south-korea" were it should be called "Republic of Korea" instead. If the current "Germany" is a stand in for the "Bundesrepublik Deutschland" (BRD) or "Federal Republic of Germany" then it should represent the former occupated zones controlled by the US, UK and France and the today unified country.

wishlist: HH-60G Pave Hawk, MH-60R Sea Hawk, UH-60L Black Hawk, NH90, Super (Sea) Lynx / Mk.88, ME: A placeable animated LSE/marshaller for individual created FARPs

looking forward to: A-6E Intruder, A-7E Corsair II, BO-105 PAH1A1, C-130J, CH-47F Chinook, Eurofighter Typhoon, F-4E Phantom II, F4U-1D Corsair, OH-58D Kiowa, Tornado

Absolutely, it's just in English localisation more people are probably familiar with "East Germany".

Though officially, in English it translates to German Democratic Republic or GDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik or DDR in German). And "West Germany" is as you said, the Bundesrepublik Deutschland or BRD, which in English best translates to the Federal Republic of Germany or FRG.

I don't think it is used as a stand-in, but rather our current Germany could be used as a stand-in for the pre-unified FRG. It's probably intended as the post unified FRG. Though yes, you're correct the "Federal Republic of Germany" is applicable to both.

Also "South Korea" is also just a name that's more commonly known, there's the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or DPRK (which is what's commonly known as "North Korea"), and the Republic of Korea or ROK, for what's commonly known as "South Korea".

Maybe DCS should stick to official country names.

My bad some reason I couldn't remember if we had them or not.  I get tired and I get stupid

No worries 🙂

But yes, it's under "GDR" under the countries list, for "German Democratic Republic".

It might be better for DCS to pick a naming convention (either use the official name, or the more commonly known name) and stick with it, IMO preferably the former, as searching for the official name will give you precisely what you're after.

Because we have things like "North Korea" and "South Korea" (which are more commonly known names, instead of the DPRK and ROK respectively), and we have things like the USSR and GDR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and German Democratic Republic), which are what they are officially known as (instead of "Soviet Union" and "East Germany" though the USSR is better known).

Yes, maybe there should really stick to official country names. BRD or FRG for example will be the same before and after the fall of the wall as long DCS do not bind country names to actually drawn borders on a map. But unfortunately there would be still some minor problems. How would DCS call Taiwan (if we ever get it). I understand that it would be easier for most people and scenarios to get the more informally called names. Who knows, there might be people that would think that the ROK are the red communists in north of the korean peninsula.

I would rather stick with the common names, and abbreviations only in rare cases. Taiwan is interesting since the Chinese government gets butt hurt and bans anything that might even hint that Taiwan is in any way independent. So we might get Nationalist China as a historical faction but unless someone from Mainland China can tell us what  what official sources call the official party line is about the FCK-1

IDF-Wan_Chien.jpg

and who was fighting in the Taiwan strait Crisis I wouldn't expect anything.

Well, the borders so far don't change (and so far aren't anything more than a marking on a map), IMO it's less of an issue.

Personally, the Republic of China (ROC). But then you've got the problem with the People's Republic of China.

True, but I think it would be better to pick one naming convention and stick with it.

But if people are confused, anybody googling "Republic of Korea" will get exactly what it is.

I mean, I don't mind which we use, just pick one naming convention and stick with it, and maybe use acronyms for our current acronyms in the debrief.

For instance the current acronym for the Soviet Union is USSR in the countries list (i.e the official name - Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), but uses the acronym "SUN" in the debrief (presumably for Soviet UNion), why not just use "USSR" for the debrief too? I don't understand it.
