SirWoofer
Hey Guys, I'm in a dilemma and need some advice. I have an order at Cyberpowerpc that's on hold because they don't have the 5900x in stock and no eta. They have the Ryzen 7 5800x in stock and want to know if I would like to change. Any opinions on the 5800x in DCS? It will be paired with a 3080 and 32GB of ram. I'm on the fence. If the difference is only a few fps I would be ok with down grading, but if it's 10 or 15 fps I would most likely wait on the 5900x. I currently have an I7 6700K OC to 4.5GHZ and 16GB ram. I have a Rift-s and want to improve the VR performance as much as possible. Any advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Lynn Edited June 30, 2021 by SirWoofer Add comments
Fliegefisch
The 5900x has a 0.1 ghz higher clock rate and 4 more cores. DCS wont profit from the 4 more cores. In gaming they both perform almost the same. There are enough tests like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aeg4NKCo_10 IMO: If the price for the 5800x is ok, go for it.
SirWoofer
Thanks Fliegefisch! The video was very helpful. It doesn't appear there would be much difference in DCS. Lynn
BitMaster
IIRC the 5800x runs a bit hotter than the 5900x despite fewer cores. If you want to exploit PBO2 you do need a serious cooler. I am actually aiming for the 5900X myself, just waiting for the "S" boards to arrive, I really want to avoid that Southbridge Fan. FETUS
I run a 5900X and have been wanting to get a 5800x to compare. I think you will be fine with the 5800x. A lot of the benchmarking videos show them to be within range of each other in gaming. And the 5800x is cheaper and available. For productivity, go 5900x. Ozmandi
I'm running the 5800X and 3080 and absolutely love them. Have 64Gb ram too and I run most settings MAX'd. Worried about high temps? Then try this program: ClockTuner v2.1 for Ryzen (CTR) Guide - Introduction (guru3d.com) I use this program specifically to lower the temps on my CPU. It works and is awesome.

SirWoofer
Thanks Guys, Excellent advice! I went with the 5800x. I'm going to be running an AIO, so hopefully the temps will be ok. Thank all of you for your opinions and advice. Lynn
