I exceed recommended hardware posted in FAQ - is it my fault that I get low FPS then?

These sort of threads make me sad.

I've just upgraded my PC to 12Gb RAM and a GTX 1080, which is already 5yrs old, and updated DCS to download the Marianas. I can go sight-seeing in my Harrier on the 'high' preset graphics settings quite comfortably.

ED have given us a free map with an immense amount of detail, down to washing drying on the washing lines, and plant-pots with plants in them. In a flight simulator.

What do we hear?

'Oh no, my FPS, boo-hoo, sob-sob, how dare they??'.

Deary me. The Marianas map is fantastic.  I'd like some fish in the sea though.....  🙂

What's even sadder, that this kind of unhealthy attachment and unhealthy mindset you show regarding business relation is still a thing in gaming industry. There's clearly something wrong with map, and we all want it to be playable. For me, it's unplayable in it's current state. And too bad, because it's perfect for my taste as air warfare theatre. 30 fps is for me barely acceptable in MSFS, very barely. In DCS steady 50 is bare minimum. 60 is enough (i lock framerate on 60 with riva) and possible, as some other maps shows (not to mention it's tiny island surrounded by empty water).

Yes. They made free map, and that's really, i mean really great, (especially that lots of us put tons of money in DCS, that's on margin, and this kind of gesture is always warmly welcomed). If i were you, i would just come more from client/customer position than from petitioner posiotion. It's more than fair for both sides that way. And i say this as a very, very satisfied and very greatful for making my dreams come true customer since like 2005 at least.

Whole thing reminds me this "I buy to support the devs" tendency. Well, they'll be fine, they are world's top notch professionals and specialists in my opinion, not some poor children, they don't need your support (At least not physical one. "Thank you" and "Go, ED" is different thing) They do great stuff to get money to do more great stuff.

So go ahead then and lock it in 60 FPS - no problem, even in 4K.

You just need to set your graphics settings accordingly and need the proper hardware -

as it has ALWAYS been with games... 🙃

...oh, and to declare 50 FPS to be the "bare minimum" to be playable is  a completely arbitrary value...

Maybe that it is not possible with MSFS, but with DCS Marianas (that's the topic, isn't it) it is possible...

and people like you who set arbitrary "must" standards and declare something, that a lot of people enjoy without problems, as "unplayable"....

..but I am the clown... 😂

In Wags video on the Hornet radar I noticed the perf over Guam was good, in addition to the new water effects. And so did others.

See Wags reply to a comment on that video. It is getting worked on so hopefully everyone will be happy. You just need to be patient

Thanks for the info.

I had a 1440p monitor at one point and FPS would worst case drop into mid 50's flying Tomcat/Hornet on NTTR and PG.

Now with a 1080p monitor, my FPS drops into the 30's over Guam.  Same PC, same settings.

That will be some incredible optimization they do.  Let's hope they can pull it off.

In England, we call it 'Looking a Gift Horse in the Mouth'.

Something to do with getting a free horse and then complaining about the state of its teeth, I think.

Someone gives one something for nothing, and all one can do is complain about the details.

Sheesh.

^ Well, that's your opinion, but it's irrelevant from this thread main subject point of view. Which is - performance compared to other maps, nothing more, nothing less. Being free or not has nothing to do with it. Even If I was paid to play it, I would still have to report noticeably worse framerate on that map compared to others, simple as that. Numbers don't lie.

Thanks Art-J, well said.

I did not intend to spark the debate around different aspects of DCS.

This map shows good signs of outstanding quality and detail, hopefully it will improve in the performance aspects as well.

So my System is

MSI Creator X299

128GB RAM

Intel i9 9980XE  overclocked to 4.1Ghz

Operating System Windows 10 (Latest) on dedicated SSD

Eagle Dynamics  DCS World has its own SSD (Slot 1 so directly connected to CPU, (Samsung 980 Pro 2TB)

MSI Ventus 3090 TI 24Gb

HP Reverb G2 VR

System is Water cooled.

All my terrains work really well greater than 60 FPS  with the exception of Marianna's  where the FPS goes down as low as 2FPS with freezes at ground level , I have turned off shadows to flat all around, Textures are medium and Low

I have noticed that GPU VRAM is loading up to 23.3 Gb of 24Gb as compared to all other maps being less than 6Gb of the GPU VRAM..

I am guessing  right now that the GPU is Bottlenecking at this level of utilisation and not entirely sure why this map required so much VRAM on the GPU, The GPU does not overheat, The CPU is fine. I have followed every hint, suggestion rebuilt Shaders in both saved games and terrain.   with no improvement in the FPS unless I take off go to greater than 5000 Ft then I can fly over Anderson and the city with ok results, Low level really low FPS.

If anyone has any suggestions to improve the frame rate in VR it would be appreciated.

Testing is done with FPS VR, GPU Temp never above 70 degrees Celsius, CPU Temp never above 60 Degrees Celsius.

When you buy a horse one of the first things you check is it’s teeth, gives a good clue to age. Also if their teeth are bad they struggle to eat so they aren’t as strong. There’s connotations with slavery in that as well.

I had been fiddling with my computer over last week and eventually did a full nuke. Reinstalled everything with a clean vanilla install. Didn’t even put my key binds back in.
I thought we’ll I’ll test my steady fps on Marianas see how low it goes and without changing settings and 4x MSAA I was getting 60fps locked dropping down to 50’s with a stutter over the centre of the main island. Although I am using 30% for trees and high visibility range. 30% is enough trees, while it does make a visible difference it looks a lot less crowded which is more to my taste, with no popping in of trees.

my specs

i5 9600k

RTX 3060

32gb ram

ssd x3

I was well impressed so I went back to my bios and turned on the MSI auto overclock which bumped the cpu up by a couple of hundred ghz, tried Mariana’s and it was a stuttery mess.
YMMV but try going back to standard no overclock it may help (I kept the RAM xmp profile) I went back and returned again to the fps I was getting above.

Same here. Very heavy stutter, especially over the centre of the main island. It seems that the Marianas map has got the very same problem

that the channel map had when it was firstly released.  Needles to say, Caucasus, Normandy, Channel, Nevada and Persian Gulf

all run perfectly smooth at 4K 60 FPS whit the very same settings, with any plane..... Latest stable version 2.7.6.13436.

Can't get over 30fps in central island with settings shown in screenshot. Which includes very low building and tree detail...

Yes it is: I'm using Bignewy's settings (his and your PC are slower than mine) and I don't even get 20 fps at low altitude: if I fly on that map over land at low altitude I basically need a bucket next to my chair...

This really is a wonderful map. You just have to fly it in a vehicle that flies at less than 150 knots.

So in other words, at least for the moment, unusable....

3060TI here, it's unplayable in VR. Not even close.

I won't complain because it's free, but this is the only map I cannot use

???

I happily flew on Marianas with a 2070S.

Sure, it is very demanding, but the answer is to just wind down the visual settings a little.  Unplayable is just not correct

In VR seriously ? Over Guam it looks like a powerpoint slideshow for me. Instant nausea guaranted

I haven't tried winding down the settings since all is fine in VR in Syria, Persian Gulf, Nevada and Caucasus. There is something wrong with the Marianas obviously.

Marianas was already unplayable for me in VR with very modest settings.  Nausea inducing as per pixie's post above.  2.7.8 has since smashed my performance even further.  Marianas isn't even a prospect for me...  I really am grateful for the free map, I just can't use it.  Glad some of you guys can though.

I think that you've answered my point, i.e. that you didn't wind down your settings.

Maybe ED included the setting "configuration" options for a reason...
