Relative Waypoints

It would be cool to place waypoints relative to an entity (example: a carrier).

While the carrier moves the waypoints should move with the carrier.

Its might be a problem to have moving waypoints, but the editor could calculate a

bunch of static waypoints, but the limit of of them could be the next problem with that i guess.

 

Ive got a carrier mission where tankers are spawning, but after a while the offset to the carrier increases,

and thats not what I want.

 

Or did i miss something an this is allready implemented?

I'm guessing you want to use this for things like patrol orbits around a fleet, or tanker/awacs tracks that always sit on top of the carrier? Or rescue helos following alongside?

 

For the former, there's nothing in place at the moment, but it's also often not really needed because… well… ships are slow. Any reasonably sized patrol track will easily cover any movement the fleet will make over a 2–3 hours period. When you add in how the AI actually handles take-offs and landings (for a land/rearm/refuel action) and tanker turns around a racetrack orbit, the benefits of having those waypoint move along with the carrier would be pretty marginal.

 

For helos, there are a scripting frameworks that let you do that (notably MOOSE / AIRBOSS). I haven't dug around to see if those can be used for fast movers, so that might be worth investigating.

 

If you're dealign with the specific combination of land units and helos, there are their variants of the “follow” and “escort” tasks, which causes them to trundle along with whatever moving group they're attached to.

I would love this. I think in the advanced way point menu we should have an option labeled cyclic operation which will keep a plane constantly on station relative to the ship. When it runs low on fuel it rtb then a new flight takes it place.

Writting a script solve nearly every problem, but i like semantic sugger 😉

 

I dont want to restart the mission every 2 hours and yes ships are slow, but after 2 hours they traveled some miles.

And this would make things easier.
