Welcome to Mossie Monday, the first in a series of videos covering an introduction to the aircraft in early access (EA).

One of the most revolutionary and effective combat aircraft of WWII, the British de Havilland Mosquito was in service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) from 1940 to 1961. A brilliant and innovative design, the ‘Mossie’ left a bright and lasting mark in the history of aviation. 

An airframe built mostly of wood to save on scarce metal supplies earned the Mosquito the nickname "The Wooden Wonder". It was also known as ‘Freeman’s Folly’ after the Air Marshal who backed its production. 
 
Armed with four 7.7mm (.303in) Browning machine guns and four 20mm (.79in) Hispano-Suiza cannons, this superbly versatile fighter-bomber could carry both bomb and rocket payloads over long distances at high speed – and deliver them with pinpoint accuracy. 
  
The Mossie’s ability to maintain a high cruising speed at high altitude made it very difficult for Luftwaffe fighters in service at the time to engage it.

Early FB Mk VI fighter bombers were actually modified NF Mk II night fighters, which were originally equipped with Merlin 21 and 23 engines. In DCS you will be flying a production variant, and your aircraft will be fitted with Merlin 25 engines.

The Mossie Mk VI can carry up to 2,000 lbs of ordinance. The bomb bay can house either Two 250 lb. or two 500 lb. General purpose or medium capacity short fin bombs. One 250 lb. or 500 lb. bomb may also carried under each wing. If wing mounted ordinance is not required, the addition of wing drop tanks can be used to extend the aircrafts range. In 1944 it's ordinance capacity was extended further to include, four rocket projectiles (R.Ps) that could be mounted under each wing. 

During World War 2 the mosquito was not only flown by pilots of the RAF, but included those displaced when their country was occupied and pilots from the commonwealth. Countries include but are not limited to Australia, Canada, Norway, and New Zealand.

The Mosquito was made famous owing to its participation in daring low level intruder raids. Some of the best examples are:
 
1. Operation Carthage an attack on the Gestapo headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark .
2. Operation Jericho a mission to free French resistance fighters from the Amiens prison in German occupied France.
3. Operation Oyster  the bombing of the Phillips factory in Eindhoven manufacturing radio tubes and valves for the German war effort during the occupation of Holland.
4. and let's not forget the raid on the radio station in downtown Berlin, designed to coincide with Herman Goring's speech to the German nation.

In summary the Mosquito as an airframe was probably the world's first truly multi role aircraft. Adapting to roles in an ever changing wartime environment such as Bomber, Night fighter, Fighter bomber, path finder, Anti U-boat and shipping,  V1 interception or diver missions and Photo-reconnaissance. A true wonder that you will be able to fly in the DCS skies shortly.

DCS: Mosquito FB VI is now available for Open Beta. We are proud of the early access release-state of the Mossie, and we are confident it will provide endless hours of enjoyment. We will now begin the second phase of development to add enhancement features as well as addressing the known bugs list. We would like to thank our whole team as well as the Closed Beta Team for their vigorous work, testing and dedication.

When you are ready to land your mosquito there are a small number of visual checks to carry out initially:

 

1. Check the air pressure, which needs to be a minimum of 200 pounds per square inch.

2. Then the supercharger switch needs to be down for MOD low gear.

3. Check that the radiator switches are open.

 

Following completion of those checks, we can reduce our speed to 180 miles per hour indicated air speed which is around 157 knots.

Once at 180 mph IAS we can complete the following actions:

 

1. Lower the undercarriage. Once down the selector handle will return to neutral and then check that the indicator shows two greens. Once lowered the nose will drop significantly so be prepared to input counter trim.

2. Make sure the propeller speed controls are fully forward

3. Check the fuel gauges to determine which tanks contain the most fuel and set the fuel cocks accordingly.

 

We can now start to reduce our Indicated Air Speed to 160 mile per hour at which point we will lower the flaps.

The flaps must be set to full down and once fully lowered considerable nose down trim will be required.

 

After lowering the flaps fully, reselect undercarriage DOWN to ensure that it is positively locked. Remember with the undercarriage and flaps lowered, the aircraft has a high rate of descent. Until used to this, pilots will tend to undershoot and correction entails the use of much more power than might be expected.

 

If I had a tip to offer during the landing process, it would be this….. as you flare before landing use the top of the windscreen wiper as a point of reference and line it up with the horizon. It should help avoid any bounce during landing.

 

To slow the aircraft down and come to a full stop following landing. Apply short multiple brake inputs this will ensure you don’t nose tip the airframe.

Okay let’s start with the machine guns and cannons. Again as with all things Mosquito the triple pressure gauge will need to read a minimum of 200 pounds per square inch for them to function correctly. If you receive combat damage during a sortie that reduces the pneumatic pressure below that value your cannons and machine guns will potentially stop working.

 

Now we open the gun master switch cover and the master switch beneath needs to be set to the down position. Both your guns and cannons are now live.

 

Right, so we now need to activate the reflector gun sight with the switch on junction box B. If you are flying in 2D your view point will change to a more centred position.

 

Your cannons are fired using the fore-finger trigger and your machine guns via the thumb operated trigger. You will obviously have those bound to your HOTAS. I have my machine guns bound to the first detent on my warthog trigger and the cannons assigned to the second detent, but that’s just a personal preference.

 

Right let’s pull all of that together in a strafing run.

 

You will need to apply a little nose down trim as you run in on your target.

Now we will set up the aircraft for a bombing run. If you forget the steps you can always refer to your kneeboard as a reminder. This kneeboard will soon be available and contains the information within the Pilot’s Notes upon which our Mosquito is based.

 

Your bomb control and selector switches are located beneath the Perspex cover to the right on the centre console. To access them you can depress your LEFT mouse button over the release catch.

 

The TOP row of switches activates the release mechanism for the wing mounted bombs. Switch 1 activates the PORT or (Left) wing release and switch 2 the STARBOARD or right wing release. When both switches are down ALL wing carried ordinance will be released together.

 

The MIDDLE row of switches activates the release mechanism for the bay mounted bombs. Switch 3 activates the PORT or (Left) bomb release and switch 4 the STARBOARD or right bomb release. When both switches are down ALL bay mounted ordinances will be released.

 

The BOTTOM row of switches activates the bomb fusing mechanism for the entire ordinance carried. Switch 5 activates NOSE fusing and ALL the bombs are NOSE FUSED when the switch is in the down position. Switch 6 behaves exactly the same but for TAIL fusing.

 

The entire panel is MULTIPURPOSE and can be used as a Bomb, Camera, or Tanks selector. Today we are only interested in the bombs. The panel is armed when the selector is in the down position. Also note that the Perspex cover cannot be closed whilst in this position.

 

Of course in you intend delivering bay mounted ordinance you will have to open the bomb bay doors. To do this depress the bomb doors selector which will then return to the centre neutral position when the action is complete and the bomb doors warning light will illuminate.

 

To drop your bombs you need to depress the bomb release button

Now that those steps have been completed, we need to activate the reflector gun sight again with the switch on junction box B. If you are flying in 2D your view point will change to a more centred position.

Let’s see how a bombing run turns out.

 

Remember you are going to want to apply a little nose down trim as you run in on the targets.

A brief introduction and overview, of your new RP-3 projectiles.

 

There are three types of projectile that are available to you the first of which is the 25 pound mark one armour piercing round. Used predominantly against shipping and when launched in a single full salvo it was considered to be comparable in fire power to a naval vessels broadside.

 Next we have the 60 pound mark one High Explosive round. This was used mainly for attacks against Infantry and soft targets.

Finally we have the 60 pound mark one High Explosive Semi Armour piercing round. Ideally suited for use against a combination of, soft and lightly armoured targets.

First we need to arm the RP-3 rails to release the projectiles. Do that now by depressing your "LEFT" mouse button over the highlighted switch or use your bound HOTAS button.

Next we have the "SALVO SWITCH" in its default OFF position the RP-3 projectiles are released in pairs (One from each wing). When in the "ON" position all the RP-3s are released at once.

Move your mouse pointer over the highlighted switch and depress your "LEFT" mouse button or use your bound HOTAS button.

In pairs “SALVO MODE” your RP-3s are released in sequence from the rails, starting with the “OUTER” rail first. They are then released sequentially until the inner rails are empty. You can adjust this sequence by selecting and depressing the highlighted button. 

The option is available should you encounter a misfire or a damaged launch rail. To the right of the button is a rail counter display and it records the number of step depressions from 1 to 4 with 1 being the outer rail on each wing and 4 being the inner rail. It also acts as a launch counter.
