Mission content - what have you guys been playing?

Hello all;

I didn't want this to be missed on the quiet subforum about missions and campaigns.

What are you guys playing to use the hind?

Personally I got one DCE campaign working but it's not my cup of tea really; the difficulty is really high (Iran irak war)

There's another dce campaign in Caucauses I couldn't get working..

Someone also went and converted the Uh1 campaign and a KA50 campaign.  I played a lot of the ka50 campaign not the huey one though..

And of course there's a few single missions especially these 'sandbox' type missions that include support for almost every airframe

The stock instant actions I've played dozens of times

 

When I write it out it looks like there is a lot of content.  It doesn't feel like that so much though and I'm curious as to opinions of the best missions out there etc?

I've been building my own missions. It's what I always end up doing anyway with modules so far. I found a PDF from the CIA about the Soviet army structure and unit breakdowns that I used to build a ton of templates of different platoons, battalions and regiments.

 

My go to strategy is just to think of what I want to do ( CAS, ground escort, interdiction, or base assault), plop down the friendly units and enemy units I want and hop in. It lacks the narrative and fancy triggers and stuff in a campaign or nice mission but since I made it and know generally what's going on it doesn't really matter. Pretty quick and it's fun.

 

At the end of the day you just want to be in the Hind flying around and blowing shit up. But I like my missions to be more realistic-ish than "oh there's 20 APCs sitting in the middle of a field doing nothing". I find with helicopters in DCS going the extra mile with units and mission design is really crucial since you're low down and close to the action. Hiding scouts and security in tree lines, finding objective areas that feel tactically important, stuff like that. Anything to make it feel more authentic-ish really pays off. 

 

Definitely checkout CasmoTV on YouTube for ideas. He's a real life Kiowa and Apache pilot who does lots of DCS stuff. He has some tactics and mission design series that are hands down some of the best DCS content out there.

Due to lack of proper SP content at the moment (which is of course explainable due to the early development state and the fact that this module 2as only recently released), I've been playing/training online on the 4YA servers.

 

Though they can be difficult, they're also quite a lot of fun

I've flown online a couple times but Idk without people really flying with you it wasn't very fun and sp was better..

I agree with you

Unfortunately many MP folks tend to do that "look at me being all lone wolf and shit".

 

Occasionally you can get into a quite intense cooperative helo ops situations. But yes, they're rare and you'll need to actively look for that. The 4YA servers themselves though are put together pretty well. They are very useful for training your skills (you won't be able to cheat your way out of trouble by using active pause 😉).

LOL at active pause.  Yeah no I don't use active pause.. or labels or any of that.    All those things reinforce really bad habits and don't help at all; truly they don't.

I can easily sum up my online experience so far which was pretty chaotic.  Tbf the community hasn't really adjusted to it yet etc; and alot of the servers just added mi24 slots even though the server isn't set up right for it tbh..

Cold war server - mostly getting schwacked helplessly by f5s.  The one time I found ground targets to engage some guy was playing CA and was **freaking out** when I was accidentally doing blue on blue...

Rotor heads server - endlessly flying around trying to find downed pilots and getting bored..

One time someone joined as gunner then asked 'SRS?' I said yeah what freq and they quit...

I don't know.  I think it'd be fantastic if I had some people to fly with or prearranged.  Same as f14 online.  Otherwise; like the f14 I can practice flying the mi24 more in SP and better too.

I love the module but it's reinforced my concerns / complaints about fragmentation damage; laser like aim from ground units etc.  This problem is very noticeable; most missions are very hard to complete; and a lot of things that would be a viable move IRL is suicide in the hind.

Git gud only goes so far.

As soon as I finish Hind flight school I'm going to fly Iran-Iraq.  Almost there.  How is it difficult?  Too many fighters?  Too many SAMS?  Too flat terrain, no place to hide?

The fighters are a problem; more than you'd think.  And yes that's flying NOE and everything.  Basically we can't fight back now..

The bigger problem is the enemy air defenses.  You get these escort missions to hit ew sites etc.  You're supposed to guard gazelles going to hit things whatever.  But there's no way to eliminate all the threats your friendlies will fly over and the way the ai is now everything is a fairly major threat that's a vehicle and gun.

The terrains pretty flat; most the fighting will be by bandar Abbas and qeshm.  The hawk sites are a huge threat with the enemy aa. As well.

The thing is you have to take any 23mm AA seriously and you have to take even m60 tanks pretty damned seriously.  And blowing a hole in their lines and getting them all is really hard and the ai aim is just ridiculously good..

It's not impossible but the flaws in helicopter combat in dcs are exacerbated in this.  I'm sure a more skilled player would do better; though there's nothing you can do about the f4s unt we get r60s.

I found the converted deployment campaign with things changed a little for the mi24 more enjoyable and the dude added a skip mission.  I fear that for me it'll take scripted campaigns for this module to shine without some major overhauls in dcs. At least for combat.

Personally the dcs campaigns to me work a lot better with planes .
