VR pilots on EA release?

I was wondering whether ED is planning to include VR/cockpit pilot models with the release of the Apache, given the Viper, A-10C II, Hind etc. all don't have them yet. Would add a lot of value and immersion to the module, especially for the folks in VR.

First thing I do when flying VR is turn off the body. 🙂

Would have to agree here nothing worse then looking around and seeing a body with no head looks little jank

Also it's another 3d model that has to be rendered and textured and every little bit helps with those pesky frametimes 🙂

Not sure if that is what I think it is but pilot models were mentioned a week ago:

It is with great pleasure that we share with you our progress on the DCS: AH-64D. The cockpits are nearly complete with only the pilots, geometry tuning, adding the parking brake, and a few clean up items to complete

So with the addition of these things, ED will consider cockpits complete. I guess they want complete cockpits for EA this time around, but that just my thoughts.

Surely it can just mean external view pilots and not for internal cockpits, but then should be mentioned as part of external 3d model and not cockpit model, we know these are two separate things.

Good to see that they are working on it!

Hopefully we don't have to wait as long for it as in the Viper.

Opposed to what @Lurker said, I only fly modules that feature a (VR) pilot body model.

Although I own them since day one (I do want to support ED and the 3rd parties), the F-16CM, F-14A/B, A-10C II, Mi-24 and Ka-50 are all gathering dust until a pilot model is added.

The empty (remote control like) cockpits look so incredibly fake imo. I can't enjoy them.

Sure hope ED creates pilot models up to (or beyond) RAZBAM quality 🙂

i cannot fly the fa18 with pilot ON, because its very hard to click to buttons in the cockpit.

Yes, just like in real life. For some switches you'll have to move your body in order to reach 'em (we just have to toggle off the pilot body for a sec)

Agreed. I only turn it on if the pilot looks better than I do. Never happened so far.

I always compare it with me sitting in the cpckpit.. and until now, all those "virtual" pilots look to me as they should call for a doctor as fast as possible... something very strange with their legs and knees most of the time... 😄 : D

Have you checked out the AV8B and M2000?

Anyways, even on the pilot model in the Hornet (which indeed might be considered somewhat outdated), I don't see anything that wrong.

Have any of you ever sat in the cockpit of a real fighter jet? I've said it before; it could just be me, but I've sat in the Viper countless times due to my previous profession (RNLAF maintenance specialist for over a decade) and sitting there always gave me somewhat of a cramped feeling. With the canopy closed is even worse. In front of you everything's "spacious", but your arms and shoulders literally block the entire side panels. Having to set switches to your back right or left require you to move your entire body. Yes, there's of course haptic feedback, but you still want to visually check if you touch the right switch.

Stepping in the DCS Viper (or any pilotless aircraft for that matter) looks like stepping in one of those cockpit posters you have hanging on your wall. You have a sea of space. In VR you constantly see those huge gaps towards the rudder pedals, which in their turn "magically" move :sorcerer: (this is by the way a lot less obvious in the Hind luckily)

(by the way; I can also remember sitting in the cockpit of an E-3A when I was maybe 10 years old and even that cockpit felt tiny)

It's almost like you can toggle the pilot body on/off with a single bind. And I'm not switching and clicking a bunch of stuff on the side panels when in combat, that's what the HOTAS is for. I think having one like in the F/A-18 or other modules really adds to the immersion and fills the cockpit. Otherwise it's just an empty cockpit being flown by a ghost. Fighter cockpits are usually fairly cramped and small and said VR pilot body really adds to that. To me it's an immersion thing and I'm not even in VR.

Another vote for pilot bodies in VR here. Essential in my view and generally excellently done from an immersion perspective.

I'd turn them off straight away. The other pilot can stay but I don't want a body in the seat where I'm sitting.

Sure in real life you can move out of the way to access switches, but in DCS it's a pain for me to do lateral head movements since I only have a 3 DOF head tracker. It works most of the time. Then again the apache cockpit is rather clean. Either way I'd like to save the frames.

They have posted some very neat renders of the pilots in the cockpit. But I still don’t know for sure if this means there will be an in cockpit VR pilot?

Not a requirement for me, but it does make you feel like you’re actually sitting in a real jet when it has a pilot body like the FA-18. Love that plane but love the Viper more, and also the Apache. So yeah, hope ED will speed up development of more (realistic looking) pilot bodies. 🙂
