A YouTube to free up VRAM for WMR and SteamVR

I found this on YouTube and I tried these settings.  I got about 2GB of VRAM freed up on my 3090.

It does make you wonder why both WMR and Steam VR dont give you a blank option - its a bit like ED and the useless 3D hanger to be fair.  Just give us a black screen that requires minimum overhead

For me

Just WMR and Steam VR = 3,5 GB of VRAM

WMR + STEAM VR + DCS MENU = 5,0 GB of VRAM

the useless 3D hangar eat 1,5 GB of VRAM

Using HP reverb G2, steam SS 100% + CRM 54% + MSAA 4X

I edit the vr scene config file to remove the plane from the hangar to save a couple of mb.

Err... that will probably be useful for many of us...  care to share how to do that?

Interesting. I've actually had the SteamVR home turned off since last year when I had my old 2080 super card. I was having an issue in DCS where my VRAM wasn't clearing between missions and the only way to clear it was to restart DCS. Even when I did that SteamVR home would sometimes then start glitching and I'd have to restart that too. I turned off SteamVR home and the problem went away completely.

I'll certainly give the empty WMR room a try too. I've absolutely no use for the WMR Skyloft and don't appreciate the game advertising that goes on there.

Thanks for the post.

Here is a whole thread on editing the config file.  I usually delete the block of text that defines the su27.

thanks! after deleting the Su-27 lines from sceneVR, cleared 500Mb of Vram, now we need to find a way to delete the hangar

Do the WMR house and Steam house really stay in memory once you fire up DCS?   Seems to make no sense to have them in memory when they are not displayed anymore...

Well to be Honest I don't think it does. I ran this program and while it did take off the vRam when In cliffhouse or Steam Room, when I fired up DCS I was still using the same amount of Vram usually for a mission..

Interesting.  I use the F/A-18 SuperCarrier Cold Start - Persian Gulf mission with fpsVR as my benchmark each time.  With just SteamVR Home disabled, I noticed only about 500MB freed when in the  mission.  When I added the "Empty Room" to WMR it freed up an additional 1.5GB.  I have gone back and forth on these settings several times and the VRAM usage/savings is consistent.  I am hoping Speed-of-heat can check this out with his great attention to detail/analysis.

Robi Hobby shared this link, you just need to drop the modified sceneVr.lua from Jharvis at DCSWorld\Scripts\DemoScenes\

now the VR menu hangar is completely gone, saved more 200 mb of VRAM.

Just WMR and Steam VR (following the first post video tutorial) = 3,5 GB of VRAM

WMR + STEAM VR + DCS MENU = 5,0 GB of VRAM

Final result

WMR + STEAM VR + DCS completely Black VR menu = 4,3 GB of VRAM

I always thought that a great, simple, solution is, like Starcraft II has, a drop menu with scenes of modules you have installed (like how the background works) and with an option of blank screen

Do any of the home screen mods have a perceptible effect on DCS performance?  I definitely saw the difference in the numbers being displayed in the video, but can you actually see the difference with your eyes?

Yes absolutely, I see the difference! Now its a lot of smoother when tested with Mi-24 over large city (Cyprus), before and after the mod. Using quite high dcs settings with 80% steam SS so quite happy now.

Interesting.  I may have to revisit the Marianas map and see if it is flyable in VR now.

Just tried this now in av8b over caucuses, sunrise, with clouds and all high settings on dcs. Steam resolution at native for the G2 and per app steam multiplier at 125%. My FPS is pretty similar at 50 to 60 FPS, but a definite improvement on frame times for the gpu which is actually what i am most interested in improving. They are now consistent below 14.

Just curious, what did you set as the native steam resolution for the G2? 2160 x 2160?

Specs: Win10, i5-13600KF, 32GB DDR4 RAM 3200XMP, 1 TB M2 NVMe SSD, KFA2 RTX3090, VR G2 Headset, Warthog Throttle+Saitek Pedals+MSFFB2  Joystick.
