Mid Tier GPU - Assistance AMD v Nvidia

Recommended Posts

Guys n gals

Im running an old RX570 and have been waiting patiently on the GPU prices dropping before I jump at a new card,

My current setup is 1440p monitor (75Mhz) with Low/high settings with MSAA and all other visuals off. on average (and if I stay away from the Channel or Island maps) im getting 30 - 50 fps which is ok I suppose for a rx570.  I might dable in VR at some point with an Oculus Quest 2 but for now I like the 1440p monitor

I was considering a RTX3060ti however prices are still up at £650 in the UK and I refuse to pay that for a £400 rrp card. However the RX6600xt is now availavble at a reasonable price (£420) ?  does anyone have any experience with this card in DCS... is it worth it or should I sit tight ?

I appriciate there is lots of AMD v Nvidia posts here but all are on 3080, 3090 or 6800xt etc which is not in my price range..... so please dont flame 🙂

If it's for mainstream gaming and not only DCS, get whichever is cheapest.

But if your main concern is DCS only, and for 1440P resolutions, the Nvidia GPUs still work better than AMD equivalents, and so will be better choices.

If this is the case, then definitely go for the RTX3060Ti 8GB (256bit 448GB/s) if you can afford it.

If that's too expensive, then take a look instead at the RTX3060 12GB (192bit 360GB/s), for DCS it'll be a better choice than the AMD RX6600XT.

The RTX3060 has also another advantage (versus RX6600XT) which is the much higher VRAM (video memory) at 12GB.

If we consider that DCS can go over 8GB when running at 1440P and 4K with certain modules and terrains (if with textures and other settings at high), it's another relevant point making it a better choice.

FWIW, the AMD RX6600XT 8GB is more or less same gaming performance as the previous gen RX5700XT 8GB.

Main difference being less power consumption (better temps) but also considerably worse bandwidth than RX5700XT (128bit 256GB/s versus 256bit 448GB/s), which affects performance especially at resolutions bigger than 1080P.

I use to have an AMD 5700xt and it ran DCS at 1440p very well on high ish settings and 2x MSAA. Also with the latest AMD Radeon software I think they have added smart access memory to these older gpu's.

So if ones going for the right price used it could be a good option to consider.

However if you do want a brand new gpu, nVidia is stronger considering price verses performance in the mid range market. A 3060ti would be perfect however, I would get a 3060 if that is your budget. That is your best bang for buck.
