Suggestion for a gaming PC upgrade - main use for DCS

Recommended Posts

I am about to build/upgrade to a new PC and need some suggestions, advises for the Hardware I have choose.

CPU                  Intel Core i9-11900K

Mainboard    ASUS ROG STRIX Z590-E GAMING
RAM
G.Skill Trident Z 32 GB DDR4-3600 Quad-Kit
GPU
ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3060 Ti OC V2

I will run DCS at 1080p on a Samsung 27" 240 Hz curved Monitor and DCS will be installed on a 970 EVO Plus 1000 GB M.2 SSD.

Any thoughts on the Hardware I did choose for the upgrade?

That hardware is more than sufficient to run the game on 1080p, at high to very high settings. Just make sure you have a decent cooling solution for that i9, they run quite hot.

Specs: Win10, i5-13600KF, 32GB DDR4 RAM 3200XMP, 1 TB M2 NVMe SSD, KFA2 RTX3090, VR G2 Headset, Warthog Throttle+Saitek Pedals+MSFFB2  Joystick.

For the RAM, and when it comes to Intel 10th and 11th gen, you don't need Quad-Kit. Dual-Kit is perfect (for example, 2x 16GB for 32GB total).

Also, if it that GSkill Trident is 3600 CL16, then you also don't need expensive kits, 3200 CL16 is fine. Put the money difference in other more important things.

Personally, for 32GB total RAM for Intel 10th/11th gen, I recommend Crucial Ballistix BL2K16G32C16U4B

With that said, I think you should wait a couple of months.

Intel 12th gen "Alder Lake" new CPUs, using DDR5 RAM, are going to be released in next October/November, and may be very worth it (or may not - unknown at this point).

So, wait and decide later. 🙂

and about Latency CL18 (18-22-22-42) at 1.35V ?

for cooling I will use a ASUS ROG Strix LC 360 RGB water cooler, I think it should be more than enough.

If it's 3600 CL18, it's also ok. 🙂 Basically same performance as 3200 CL16 (both are 10 nanoseconds latency).

With that said, personally I would go for 3200 CL16 due to tighter timings.

Yes, it is more than enough, good even if overclocking.

One change I would make is go with a 16GB x2 RAM kit so you can easily upgrade to 64GB in the future by adding two more sticks.

Modules: F-14A/B | F-15C | F-16C | F/A-18C | SU-33 | Spitfire Mk IX | AH-64D | UH-1 | Super Carrier | Combined Arms | Persian Gulf | Syria | NTTR

Setup: VKB Gunfighter Mk.III F-14 CE HOTAS | Thrustmaster TWCS Throttle | MFG Crosswind V3 | Custom switch panel | Tek Creations F14 Display Panel | Custom F14 Left Vertical Console | Custom IR Tracker | Custom butt kicker

PC: i7 11700K | 64GB G-Skill DDR4 3600MHz | EVGA GeForce RTX 3080Ti FTW3 | DCS dedicated 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD | 3440x1440 144hz 34" ultrawide

I would skip the 32GB kit and would buy a 64GB kit right away but settle on 3200-CL16 to keep the price down. With Intel the actual DDR4 speed/performance is not as critical as it is on early Ryzens. You won't really see a lot of difference between 3200-16 and 3600-16 on Intel CPUs when gaming.

When you follow the HW threads, there are more and more threads emerging stating RAM usage well above the 32GB when on the right map with the right module etc...

Adding RAM a year later can work but chances are bigger it will not.

I just bought 64GB yesterday for a buddy, 3200 CL16 for 250€, Gskill.  You can get the "same" kit with CL14 but price is double that, 480€.... for AMD I would consider the lower CL, for Intel...skip it and use the cash elsewhere.

My 2 cents

Has the general consensus now changed?

As 32Gb of Ram was always recommended over 64Gb of Ram.

Did a quick search and  everyone seems to still agree that 32Gb is the amount required.

Just interested on how you come by you findings?

The AMD AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 3D coupled with Cl14 G.Skill Trident Z 32 GB DDR4-3600 would easily let you play at 4K when bounded with a high end GPU such as the RX 7900 or RTX 4090, you got to understand how the Ryzen 3/3D works with lower latencies and in particular a 4 X 1 banks kit.

The 5800X 3D cache will allow the CPU to run at full throttle at 4K, which is not gonna happen with anything over Cl14, the 4 X 1 banks give you interleaving which mean the CPU can spread datas over the 4 banks and the gain when those are present is not negligible, your CPU will not throttle down at full load (4K).

Compared to my previous rig:

Ryzen 5 5600X, G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C14Q-32GTZR

VS

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 3D. G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR4 3600 (PC4 28800) Desktop Memory Model F4-3600C14Q-32GTZRA

Test at 4K 2 X MSAA 3DMark Pro. Same GPU EVGA GEFORCE GTX 1080Ti boss 5600X and GPU boosted (Ryzen Master and MSI Afterburner), no boost for new rig test.
